No doubt.

Same thing for a player's career.  It's better to get a few years of a lights-out awesome difference-maker than 2-3x that of a "solid" or "reliable" player.

At the same time, do we know that Patterson's 4 games would be at a high level and that he wasn't dinged up himself? I don't profess to be any sort of expert on the player.

I think Patterson played 6 games last year and was dinged in many.  Seems that phins fans were counting on him though so he must have seemed good when he played.  People act like he was a bargain basement signing, but the guy was playing out a crazy contract that the Browns gave him and at least we got him at a significant discount from that.

According to the Idzik fanboys, we should win 8 games just by showing up. Never mind that he hasn't made the necessary improvements to this team, Idzik's mere presence in the building will compel us to victory!

The necessary improvements as judged by.... You and your expert football acumen and eye for talent? You know next to nothing about football and are wrong on 90% of any football opinion you have. Forgive me for feeling that if Rex and idzik don't mind going into the year with the fifteen cb's taken in the first two rounds.

What can lower these high passing yards against:

1) Lessen your 3 and outs  - A strong running game with better QB play will equal less possessions by the opposing team's offense.

2) Better QB Pressure - Richardson has a year of experience under his belt and i expect big things from Coples this year, i think the heightened pressure will lead to less time in the pocket for QBs thus potentially lessening the total yardage allowed.

I think we will be way better this year (10-6) simply based on upgrades alone. I am excited about the draft and I am looking forward to seeing who we will draft.

Yes and add in all the turnovers giving the ball back to the opposing team- a number of factors go into why we gave so much pass yardage not just one factor

Let's look at that 97 Point differential:

Week 4 Titans 38 Jets 13 - Point Differential - 25 Points

Week 8 Bengals 49 jets 9 - Point Differential  - 40 Points

Week 11 Bills 37 Jets 14 - Point Differential - 23 Points

Week 13 Dolphins 23 Jets 3 - Point Differential - 20 Points

Total Blow Out Point Diferentials - 108 Points...

For four games where the Jets got Blown out they was a 108 point swing.

For the other 4 losses the margin of loss was Pats (3) , Steelers (13), Ravens (16)  and Panthers (10) - All within two scores....(10.5 pt Average).

I am not worried. We were not the luckiest 8-8 team ever. There were 4 blowouts that accounted for the large point differential.

The Jets will go 10-6 with a better O and a better pass rush.

homers usually react this way when faced with reality.

You are talking about reality when you are basically saying Jets were not an 8-8 team last year? IIRC, your record is who u are. Do u think the 9-7 Giants weren't the SB champs in 2011 cuz they barely had a winning season? Or do u feel the 16-0 Patriots were the actual Champs in 2007-08?

Im not worried at all. Milliner showed that the injury and lack of offseason seemed to be the reason for the slow start. A healthy Dimitri Patterson would be better than a declining Antonio Cromartie. Not interrupting Antonio Allen's progress would be a great idea, draft a FS. Most of all, the Jets need to score points themselves.

Jets scoring more points?  "What you talking about Villian?"

You know what worries me more?

The Jets havent had 4,000 yard passer since 1967.

You know else?

They've never had a 30 TD passer.

My dude.

You know what worries me more than that?

Dying alone.

There are ways of getting around that...

i did not say they weren't 8-8. i said they were the worst point differential team in history to be .500. this is a lot of bounces going the jets way; something that will not be repeating itself.

Joseph would be mighty convenient.

It would. But if he's cut, he won't be cut until after the draft, right? That still leaves us in a bind. If they take a corner in the 1st and then he's cut, do they sign him and get nothing out of their 1st round corner? If they don't draft a corner high, and Joseph doesn't get cut... then they're screwed that way, too.

It is a long shot, but Idzik may be playing chicken with their FO.  IMO they do not NEED a corner, Patterson takes care of the "need."  They should look for an upgrade.  Most trades happen around the draft and the Jets were linked to Joseph for a bit during the start of the FA period. He seems to fit the Rex D as well or better than Alterraun Verner.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Patterson more of a slot corner than anything and if so, who's the #2? Even still, Patterson's injury history is lengthy, he hardly seems like the kind of guy you can trust to fill a spot for you. I'm guessing that unless something changes, the 1/2/3 will be Milliner, Walls, and Wilson vs. Patterson.

I think that's basically where it shakes out. There are some decent corners in this class, so I'd guess any corner drafted in rounds 1-4 gets a shot to compete with Walls - who wasn't that bad last year. Then Patterson and Wilson compete for slot duties. In a nightmare scenario where Walls regresses, they can't bring in a rookie, and nobody gets cut then Wilson kicks outside and they've got a veteran slot corner in Patterson.

Given how awful Cro was last year and how much Milliner improved towards the end of the season, I'd expect the secondary will be better. And unless they go all offense this draft (which, to BroadwayJoe12's point about the Jets' record when scoring 20+ PPG last season).

The defense will be fine. And frankly if not, maybe Rex isn't the defensive genius he gets credit for. Plenty of other coaches get it done defensively with less than the two first round corners, two first round DE's (including a DROY and a 10+ sack 5-tech who's one of the best young defensive linemen in the league), and a first round OLB he's got to work with (and had a part in drafting over the last 4 years, so no complaints about scheme fit).

And that's not to mention a decent young corner who played a lot last year (Walls), a safety who's outperformed his draft position and showed some nice things last year (Allen), another safety who he brought after coaching in Baltimore, a pass rushing specialist he coached in Baltimore, a veteran former first round pick and $40M+ OLB who plays a valuable read and react role in the scheme, a couple of day two ILB's both of whom have been solid and one of whom he drafted and has praised effusively, and two good NT's for the rotation, one who was an elite run stuffer last year and another he drafted day 2 who has tremendous physical talent and played well when he worked his way into the rotation.

It's not like Idzik is giving Ryan a couple of sticks and asking him to start a fire. Frankly I'm disappointed with how much they've invested in the defense over the years. With a defensive genius like Ryan I expected the team to take that elite defense he started with in 2009, draft some talented guys in the mid-late rounds over the years to groom, and spend premium picks on improving the offense. Instead we've had years of nothing but investing in the defense. If he's such a good defensive coach, why do we need to keep bringing in first round picks for him to field a solid defense? And this coming from someone who still likes Rex Ryan as the HC of the Jets for now - but has never understood why the team has operated like this over the last few years. I'll be happy if Idizik says hey Rex, we got you Dee last year and you've got some young corners on the roster with physical talent, time to make it work.

Patterson is not just a slot corner.  I don't even know why that BS gets thrown around so much.  Slot is actually a tougher cover in straight man IMO.  You have to worry about every direction and more picks.  You don't have the sideline to help.  That is why so many WRs are more successful in the slot.  IMO the main reason slot is considered a lesser position is that it is generally a nickel position and covering a #3 WR.  Plenty of the analysts really like him.  I don't see much stuff from PFF but he was the #17 CB by mid-November last year according to one of the rotoworld blurbs, and that was playing hurt..  The Browns gave the guy big money.

I don't know much first hand about Patterson, but based on what teams have relied on and how much money he has made, he is certainly more established and a more likely option than Walls.  The Jets and the rest of us would prefer a young guy like Walls step up, but it is not as likely.

I am one of the most rabidly pro-Rex guys here, but I pretty much agree.  I trust Rex to deal with the D.  If the corners suck he should scheme around it.  The problem with Cro last year was that he had been good so they trusted him.  He was just brutally inconsistent.  I'd like to know if there are some advanced metrics showing if he just flat sucked last year or if he just gave up a bunch of big plays that skewed him to very bad.  If it is the latter you can see kind of see relying on him based on the season he had in 2012

Amazing that they finished 1, 5, 6 and 2nd in passing in the years 2009-2012 without an elite pass rush and with being chopped to pieces from the slot and TE.

think about the games they lost the BIG GAMES against Indy and Pittsburgh...they couldn't shut down the WINNING QBs on 3rd downs even WITH the best 1-2 DB punch since the Raiders of old. but hey, remember it how you want and flash the stats that are always convenient for you to cite-the rest of us saw what we saw and know what we know.

jets were the luckiest 8-8 team in history last year. without a major improvement in QB play this is a 5 win team.

well before last seson they said the jets will win 4 games so i guess that will put us at what 12  GO JETS!!

I guess your memory is a little hazy. They couldn't stop Rashard Mendenhall and Mark Sanchez gave them seven points. I guess you also don't remember the secondary getting decimated against the Colts either or Sanchez not being able to stay on the field the ENTIRE second half after Shonn Greene went down.  But you and the rest of your family (that's who the "we" is, isn't it?) go on an forget about those evil stats and focus on one game against a Hall of Fame QB.

B. Roethlisberger 10/19 133 7.0 0 2 2-12 65.6

35.5

Hey look, more stoopid stats! MY MEMORY SUCKS. I thought he threw for more than 133 yards and had more than ten completions and had more than zero touchdown passes and less than two interceptions.

My apologies for my sh*tty memory. Who needs stats when you have a mind like a steel ******* trap??

STATS STATS STATS Am I imagining a different game or games that Rex's vaunted defense couldn't ever seem to stop any of those guys on 3rd and longs? Rothlisberger also kept drives alive with his legs that night too...here are a couple of lines from the recap

"We overcame a lot more obstacles this year than we have in the past," Polamalu said. "But we still got one more to go. "

And too often, New York's defense was like a swinging gate that Roethlisberger and Mendenhall ran through with ease But the early hole was too deep, even after a 4-yard TD pass to Jerricho Cotchery made it 24-19 with 3:06 remaining. The Jets never got the ball back."

"But Roethlisberger hit Heath Miller for 14 yards, then Brown for 14 to send the Steelers to yet another Super Bowl."

I don't know maybe you weren't actually watching that game that night, maybe your mommy made you go to bed by then but the rest of us who DID watch saw a lot different game than those stats show-apparently so did the ESPN writer

54% 3rd down eff for Pitt that night, pretty much proves what I was trying to say

This is even a better example Watch these 11 minutes of 3rd down ineptitude by the defense and STs, penalties, dropped INTs, Roughing the punter, 2 and 8's 3rd and 6's galore. Tell me where is the pass rush? You with the smart ass mouth who doesn't know WTF he is talking about-watch the tape bro watch the tape

Hey, I know you're hurt because you look like a complete fool talking about how Rex pass defense got shredded by Roethlisberger which was your fallback when your original claim that the pass defense was bad when we had great CB play.

You saw two ******* drives and apply it to the whole game like that's what happened. I notice you are now including a quote about Mendenhall in your argument now.

The fact is you cannot possibly hang that loss on the secondary. How many yards was they SUPPOSED to hold him to? 40? ******* guy went three for five for 27 yards on third down and you think that says that the secondary was shredded.

and here's the year before-look at the difference from when they were getting to Manning to him taking over the game with Garcon and Collie and eating our defensive backs up and beating the Jets through the air - case closed? Yea I think so too-I've made my point
