Jets' Sheldon Richardson says he's 'not a dope fiend'

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - Sheldon Richardson can say no to drugs, and he fully plans to.

"I'm not a dope fiend," the Jets defensive end said Thursday about his four-game suspension for marijuana use. "I can say no. I just chose not to. I was in a depressing time in my offseason and that's just it. It's just that simple. There's money on the line and my money is worth more than some weed."

The NFL announced Richardson's suspension earlier this month. At the first day of training camp practice on Thursday, Richardson worked with the second team, while the first team spot was given to rookie Leonard Williams. He said he never considered appealing the decision.

"There was no reason to appeal it," Richardson said. "I take full accountability for my actions. ... I apologized to my teammates and my organization and I told them they don't have to worry about my name being in the news again."

He said he especially regretted how his decisions affected his family.

Richardson said he was "a little disappointed and embarrassed, for my parents' sake. When an NFL player messes up, the whole world knows about it. The family goes through a lot. People at work don't know how to talk to them anymore. Little things like that that get to them."

Does Sheldon strike you as depressed?

I love how all he's really worried about is his money.  Not his life and the others around him (doing 140 on an interstate and running from the cops with a gun in the car).  Not his legacy, career, reputation, team, etc...nope, just money is more important than weed.

Oh and by the way, it's the NFL's fault.  Because he's in the NFL this is a big deal and its world news and it hurts others and sorry and stuff.

This ******* guy.  Haha.

Sign Mo.

Thanks Idzick

With the gun, and 12YO inthe car, plus the resisting arrest he won't have to worry about suspension, think he's going to jail

doesn't seem like he was charged with either of those things. gun was probably registered. remember it happened in Missouri not ny/nj.. Probably permitted to have a gun in his car.

Well, looks like we will need Leonard full time this year.

Yep.  Damn shame they went DL again.

I'd expect Coples to see more looks at DE moving forward putting a little pressure on Maudlin and EK.  However, you have a vet pass rush specialist in Jason Babin too.  This might have helped his roster status.

What kind of scumbag has a 12 year old in a car doing that sh*t?  WTF is wrong with people?

that right there tells me who needs this problem child no matter how talented he is on the field.

My spidey-sense told me something was up with this guy when he didn't show up for some of the voluntary workout's.  New coach.  New systems.  And he's acting like he's too good to be there.  Yet Revis is there, etc.

He has lost all credibility.  He's in the process of throwing away his career.  He is showing himself to be so selfish it actually hurts to think about.

Just another Idzik draft pick turning out to be an absolute loser.  It's hard to believe how bad Idzik was (regardless of whether injury got the player, stupidity or lack of talent).  It doesn't matter.  His picks were terrible.

Holy holy holy crap.

Did anyone hear his live interview on espn today?? They brought up the suspensions and he agreed it was "lesson learned"...THEN this news breaks!??!? If I'm espn NY, I replay the interview and laugh and mock and laugh and mock and laugh and mock.

If I'm him, and I know that the news is gonna get out eventually, I'm talking to NOBODY!!!

This guy is off-the-charts dumb and off-the-charts self destructive. Earlier post had good point about him maybe being depressed. Nice excuse (and maybe legit) but too late for me and I don't care. Cut his ass!! NOW!!!!

NOTE: I'm watching espn and NFL network now and neither one is mentioning the story?? Is it at all possible it's a hoax? I only ask cuz this is off-the -charts dumb...no one can really be this dumb. No one!!!

As I mentioned before, I hope he gets at least another 4 games added to the suspension if not the whole season (depending on details).

But maybe we should play this like Patsie fans do with Brady.

Wtf?!? There's no concrete evidence. The cop didn't actually see the car pull in the driveway. All the cop saw was some brake lights of a Bentley in a driveway. Bentleys are everywhere in Missouri! Sheldon was taking the kids out for ice cream and just made a wrong turn. #SupportSheldon

Talent without character is worthless.  Bad character will destroy whatever your talent builds.

And Richardson is on that path unless he wakes up.  The reason Watt gets a $100 million

contract is he's a beast on the field and silent off it (other than commercials)

Good effort. I imagine there's a dashcam vid somewhere though.

Pretty sure the charges are old news and this is why he was suspended to begin with.  Not completely sure

I think there is some overreaction, but certainly, these are all red flags for the player.

I look at it like this, this news *should* send a message to the player, and it certainly impacts Sheldon's monetary value going forward because of the risks, Jets conceivably reap some benefit here in that the future FA contract just got a whole lot cheaper to negotiate.
