Another 2014 draft pick.

  • SELECTED BY: Panthers
  • ROUND: 2
  • PICK (OVERALL): 28 (60)
PICK ANALYSIS:

"I think there's real value to that pick at No. 60. He was thought to be a first-round defensive end. However, there's a lack of consistency as you watch more game tape." -- Mike Mayock

COMBINE STATS

  • 40 YARD DASH: 4.92 SEC
  • BENCH PRESS: 22 REPS
  • VERTICAL JUMP: 31.0 INCH
  • BROAD JUMP: 114.0 INCH
  • 3 CONE DRILL: 6.83 SEC
  • 20 YARD SHUTTLE: 4.45 SEC

ANALYSIS

Strengths

Is long and has a big, projectable frame with room for added bulk. Quick off the snap. Loose athlete. Moves like a linebacker -- 6.83-second 3-cone drill paced defensive linemen at the combine. Plays on his feet. Runs the arc -- dips his shoulder, bends the corner and gets home. Closes fast on the quarterback. Can spin off blocks, redirect and chase the quarterback. Crashes down the line and ranges in pursuit. Flexible and coordinated to zone-drop. Has upside.

Weaknesses

Needs more time in the weight room. Still developing positional instincts and awareness to blocking schemes. Pad level is too high. Exposes his frame and gets locked up. Does not convert speed to power. Unrefined hand use, counters and pass-rush moves. Needs to learn to use his length advantageously. Does not provide enough resistance at the point of attack. Crumbles vs. double teams.

Draft Projection

Rounds 2-3

Bottom Line

Big, athletic, ascending, pass-rush talent with the size, burst and flexibility to pressurize the edge as a right defensive end. Is not a finished product, particularly as a run defender, but should only become more disruptive as his strength, technique and savvy catch up with his natural physical ability. Could also draw looks as a 3-4 rush linebacker.

So weird, wonder why NE released him. They traded their 2nd round pick for him and all Bellicheck says is "it didn't work out".

He refused to be implanted with a micro camera in his eye and a tiny powerful microphone in his ear so that he could record opposing teams' signs and calls.

Bill Belichick on Kony Ealy: 'He's definitely on the upswing'

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- When the New England Patriots acquired defensive end Kony Ealy and a third-round draft choice (No. 72) from the Carolina Panthers in exchange for a second-round draft choice (No. 64) in March, the best-case scenario for the team was that Ealy would become a significant part of their rotation. That hasn't decisively happened at this point, but Bill Belichick sees signs of progress.

Kony Ealy hasn't yet panned out as the Patriots hoped when they traded for the defensive end, but coach Bill Belichick said he's seen progress lately.

"Kony has gotten better every week," the Patriots coach said in his pre-game radio interview on WBZ-FM 98.5 The Sports Hub. "Jacksonville week was his best week. Then last week against Houston was a little better. This week has been a little bit better. So each of the last three weeks, he's definitely on the upswing."

Whether that is enough for Ealy to stick on the roster will be one notable storyline to monitor over the next week, as his transition to the Patriots included him being held out of the final stretch of spring practices and the first day of training camp because of a coach's decision. Tom Pelissero of NFL Media reported earlier Friday that the Patriots have gauged the trade market for Ealy.

The Patriots' depth at defensive end is thin, so Ealy's potential emergence would be an important development.

"He's been better in practice, made more plays in the games, so hopefully that will continue tonight. He's making solid progress for us," Belichick said in the radio interview before Friday's road game against the Detroit Lions.

Belichick and the Patriots released Ealy prior to roster cuts so the veteran edge defender could land with another team before the start of the season.

“I do think he was making progress and getting better and was really working hard,” Belichick said on Saturday. “It's just one of those things that didn’t work out or wasn’t going to work out. It’s nobody’s fault. He worked hard. We worked hard. There was a lot of effort put in, but in the end we didn’t feel like this was going to work out. It gives him an opportunity about a week ahead of next week to hopefully create a better opportunity for himself. I think he deserved that. He did everything we asked him to do. It just didn’t work out for either one of us like we hoped it would.”

It will be interesting to see which team gives Ealy a chance.

I was wondering the same thing.  I was like "didn't they trade a high draft pick for this guy?"  With Belichick though, he'll make it work out.  Let's not forget how last year he traded Jamie Collins and Chandler Jones yet still won the SB.

Whoa.  That's a nice pick up.

The Pats outright cut him?

Yup.  Said they couldn't find a way to fit him in their scheme.  Could be a good get.

Trading away your guys is one thing, but I just don't understand basically trying a guy out for a 2nd round pick. But it's the Patriots, so nobody questions it.

We have claimed DE Kony Ealy off waivers and waived/injured DL Anthony Johnson.

The Jets have claimed DE Kony Ealy off of waivers from the Patriots and waived/injured DL Anthony Johnsonicon-article-link.gif.

The 25-year-old Ealy was originally a second-round pick (No. 60 overall) of the Carolina Panthers in the 2014 NFL Draft. The Missouri product spent his first three pro seasons with the Panthers, appearing in 47 regular season games. He had 14 sacks and six forced fumbles with the Panthers before being traded to the Patriots on March 11.

Ealy, 6'4", 275 pounds, also has appeared in five postseason contests. He racked up three sacks and an interception in Super Bowl 50 against the Broncos.

The Jets claimed Johnson off of the New England's practice squad last November. He appeared in seven games for the Jets and totaled four defensive tackles.  Johnson was credited with a sack in the Green & White's preseason opener vs. the Titans.

Mauldin should be worried about his spot on the roster.

I think he's a gonner, Ealy is a Big OLB in a T Suggs way, physically at 6"4 275.

He should at least be able to set the edge. Good pick up, under performed So far in his career, hopefully finds a home here? We are thin in talent at OLB.
