You can cross one name off the Jets' general manager wish list. Minnesota Vikings assistant general manager George Paton has reportedly turned down the Jets' offer for an interview, just like he did in 2013, when the Jets hired John Idzik, whom they just fired. Paton has a long-standing relationship with Vikings GM Rick Spielman, and Paton clearly feels comfortable in Minnesota. So he will remain there. The Jets had seven confirmed candidates for their GM job, including in-house candidate Rod Graves, who seems unlikely to replace Idzik. That list is now down to six, including five out-of-house candidates. The Jets will interview Seattle's Trent Kirchner this weekend. It is the only GM interview they have set up. They have two head coaching interviews set up, both in Seattle this weekend, with Seahawks assistants Dan Quinn and Tom Cable.

Not just the Jets.

@danpompei: Vikings asst. GM George Paton is staying in Minnesota. Will NOT interview with Bears or Jets.

He probably would have had to hire security for the next 5 years if he took that Bears job. I didn't care for him anyway, would much rather have the rest of the candidates.

Report: Raiders coach Cable punches assistant

Six years after Raiders linebacker Bill Romanowski shattered teammate Marcus Williams' eye socket during a scrimmage, Oakland is dealing with another public relations black eye, if not a literal one.

According to Napa (Calif.) police, two Raiders staff members were involved in an altercation Aug. 5 that resulted in one staffer being hospitalized for a jaw injury.

Although Napa Police Lt. Brian McGovern would not identify the names of the two men involved, the National Football Post Web site reported that the victim was third-year coach Randy Hanson, a defensive assistant, and Fanhouse.com reported that head coach Tom Cable punched Hanson and fractured his jaw.

The NFL is investigating the incident, according to league spokesman Greg Aiello.

Cable denied punching Hanson, according to an ESPN report. The report goes on to say Hanson injured his jaw when he was flipped out of a chair by Cable during a team meeting.

"There is a police report; however, due to privacy issues, the report cannot be released," Lt. McGovern told the Daily News Monday. "Basically on Aug. 6, one of our units was dispatched to the Queen of the Valley hospital here in Napa. What had happened, the victim came into Queen complaining of pain in his jaw area. Any time a person comes in who is a victim of assault or battery case, the hospital is mandated to call the police department. That's how we got involved."

McGovern said the victim was not pressing charges and that Napa police considered the matter closed.

"Basically, the victim stated he did not want any further police action or police involvement," McGovern said. "As far as we're concerned - unless the victim recontacts us and is willing to cooperate - the case is closed."

The Raiders did not respond to a call for comment. Hanson could not be reached.
