Report: Bears have no interest in hiring Rex Ryan

January 3, 2015, 7:15 pm

Rex Ryan's got the bravado to rally a fan base. He's got the defensive mind to potentially solve the Bears defensive woes. He's even got family history with the Bears as his dad, Buddy Ryan, was the Bears defensive coordinator for the 1985 Super Bowl team.

So that would logically link Ryan to the Bears head coaching vacancy...right?

Apparently not.

According to a report from Pro Football Talk, the Bears have no interest in hiring the former Jets head coach. Ryan spent six seasons in New York, going 50-52 and making two AFC Championship Game appearances. As bad as the Jets (4-12) were last season, his defense finished sixth in the NFL in total defense. The Bears, on the other hand, finished 30th.

The other knock on Ryan is his ability to control the offense. He was scarcely involved with the offensive operations in New York, and he watched two young quarterbacks, Mark Sanchez and Geno Smith, fail to develop under his watch.

Ryan has interviews set up with the San Francisco 49ers and the Atlanta Falcons and is also drawing interest from the Buffalo Bills. It's also been widely reported that Ryan would not take a defensive coordinator job if he was not hired as a head coach anywhere. Instead, he would be a TV analyst for at least a year.

Meanwhile, the Bears have already interviewed Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn and Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Gase. There's also potential interestin Kansas City Chiefs special teams coordinator and former Bears coach Dave Toub and the team has requested permission to interview Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator Todd Bowles, who saw his team lose to the Carolina Panthers on Saturday in the Wild Card Round. The Bears are also expected to interview former Buffalo Bills head coach Doug Marrone later this week.

There is no reason for a team with any offensive issues to consider Ryan.  He brings

nothing to the table and has shown he has trouble hiring an effective offensive staff

to help him.  Therefore BUF, OAK, SF, CHI shouldn't consider him

I don't believe it.

I've been told repeatedly Rex Ryan would be scooped up by some lucky team within 20 minutes of Woody Johnson firing him.Looks now like the COMPLETE LACK OF A COMPETENT JETS' OFFENSE FOR 6 YEARS is a cause for some concern among other NFL teams in need of a head coach.

More likely he'll trade empty banter and forced laughter about sack dances and end zone celebrations. It's a living.

Bears outright refuse.

Bills and Raiders "have interest," but neither have scheduled an interview.

San Fran has him on the back burner.

Basically, he's hoping for Arthur Blank to lose his mind.

Top five coach, though.

Future hall of famer

Alot of Raider fans would like Jack Del Rio to get the job. 1 he's a longtime Raider fan', local kid and his parents are Raider season ticket holders. 2 The staff he would probably put together. OC- Dirk koetter( brought him to the NFL with Jaguars) Would do a nice job developing Derek Carr. Oline Mike Tice , and Del rio background is defense , so okay with whoever he brings in to be his defensive coordinator.

So true, in fact he doesn't really have an offensive staff to speak of. Who would be his OC? no way would it be mornighweg. Atl is his only hope, he can hope their OC and probably ST coach will stay too. It is interesting that he has been in the league for yrs but has never enough connections to get a good staff to be with him. He kept schotty when he came here and sparano and Marty had no previous connections to him. He has Dennis Thurman and his drinking buddy weeks. That is pretty much it.

So what is Idzik up to these days?

Why does it matter? I think it's pretty much the consensus that Idzik wasn't a good GM, nobody is in denial about it.

Rex on the other hand has polarized fans, where there is a huge contingency of fans that insist upon him being something that he proved time and again over 6 years that he is not.

It matters to anyone that thinks we are downgrading from either one.

this….SF never made any sense, their biggest issue is they need someone to come in and fix Kapernick…yea I know Harbaugh is a QB guru but for whatever reason Kapernick fell off a cliff this year.

Chicago's offense has been a complete cluster**** despite Cutler being surrounded by top flight talent at every other position and unit on that side of the ball. Rex was the last thing that team needed.

I thought he'd be a good fit there with the right OC. Chicago would love his defense and pressers.

He'd be entertaining on uncensored sports talk.

Also, watching Brandon Marshall, Alshon Jeffery, and Jay Cutler go all Lord of the Flies on each other would be fun.

Not surprised.  As bad as the Bears were this past season, their offense would be even worse under Rex, and it looks like the Bears' ownership realizes this.

Maybe they realize that the best way to fix their team is not to hire a coach who demonstrated his football team gets worse over time, not better.

I think his three best shots once ESPN sees he is an inarticulate lout who can't read the cue cards would be 1) circus clown with Ringling Bros, 2) Manager in the WWE (Bobby the Brain Heenan heel.type) or 3) HC of the Raiders which isn't much different than the other 2 choices

That statement is a reach. How many 4-12 HCs that got fired less than 2 days ago, were scheduled to interview with two team with the third team showing interest as soon as it's HC spot became vacant? I'm sure those teams saw the 4-12 record of his. My guess is 'not many'.

If you have a reliable QB, he will make sure your run is one of the best in the league. It's not the entire offense. It's just the pass offense, n most of that has to do with not finding the right QB. Half the NFL has that issue. QB sales are rare n when there is one on the market (Manning), you'll face a strong challenge.

Is there anyone here who can tell me with a straight face that if Rex had Peyton Manning in 2009 or 2010 (or any subsequent years) that Jets wouldn't have won the SB? Rex went 50-52 with the leagues worst QB n the leagues top 5 run offense along with top 3 D the entire time. It's not rocket science. QBs are hard to find n u need fair amount of luck.
