Adam Gase talks Jets’ draft class

The Jets had plenty of needs entering the draft, and they did a good job of addressing many of them.

Coach Adam Gase recently joined #PFTPM to discuss the team’s selections, along with the unprecedented process that resulted in coaches and General Managers working from home during the weeks preceding the draft — and that spawned new techniques for screening potential draft picks, techniques that likely will be used even after the world returns to normal.

The conversation touched on topics like the decision to use the eleventh overall pick in the draft on tackle Mekhi Becton, waiting to pick a receiver until round two, the selection of FIU quarterback James Morgan in round four, the decision to pick a punter, and much more.

The video is attached; it was the fifth coach or G.M. interview of the week. More are coming next week.

It’s always surprising to find out that Gase is actually pretty personable in these interviews. The Miami beat guys said that about him when he came up here, that his public persona is dickish, but he’s a pretty good and professional guy to deal with, media-wise.

I liked his answer on Jamal, btw. Basically, “I know nothing, that’s between Jamal and Joe, and wake me up when it’s over.”

I've said it before, Gase is underrated here. 

I feel pretty confident that he and Sam can win big.

Fantastic interview, thanks for sharing.

I have (very serious) doubts about Gase as the guy to lead this franchise forward but I do believe he's a smart, hardworking, passionate guy. Hope he and Douglas have as much chemistry as they seem to.

The only times he’s a dick is when it’s responding back to Manish because he hates him. And who doesn’t? Otherwise he’s never been a problem with the media.

I have had no issue with Gases style or how he acts.  He just has a record of being a lousy offensive coach.  It is not just how badly his offenses have been rated but how the offense looked last year.  Worse than when legends like Bates and Morton ran the show

I'm not a Gase guy, at the time I wanted McCarthy.  I also live , not near Miami(thank God) but on the edge of the Fish influence area.  As a Jets fan I was always afraid of Gase.  He got very good play out of bad players.

First year, again with very bad players, a very bad team finished pretty strong.

Guy has no tolerance for stupid, poop stirring media.  Can't blame him.  His friend Joe has improved his roster.  His job is to bring the improvement to the field

Morton was very good actually. Bowles made him the scapegoat because he had to fire someone but couldn't fire his buddy Kasey Rogers, even though he should have. Bowles saw Morton as a threat for his Job. He could have been our interim easily, Bowles hated that about him.

I'm in the same boat. Gase grew on me dramatically as a person since we hired him. It's clear he's a smart, personable guy, just sometimes short with the media.

But look at this:

2016 Dolphins: 24th in total offense

2017 Dolphins: 25th

2018 Dolphins: 31st

2019 Jets: 32nd

That is just atrocious for someone who's supposed to be an offensive "guru". He's gone if the offense doesn't get it together this year.

Its atrocious to think that being a so called guru can make up for the most important player on offense missing huge chunks of games and to ignore that part of the equation.   

Lets see what he does with a hopefully healthy QB.

In his entire professional career, quite literally the only time he's seen any offensive success is when Peyton Manning was calling the plays for him at the line. There is absolutely no evidence to suggest he's even slightly competent at what he's paid to do.

Gase gets a bad wrap for an offensive genius.

As crazy as it sounds, Gase needs someone to tell him what to do on offense. Peyton was the only one that did it with success. Sam is starting to do that now. Notice how Gase gets excited when Sam tells him what he wants to do. Without QB input Gase's game plans are predictable and have no rhythm.

 

Our head coach is surrounded by everything it takes to be successful at this point. Improved roster, strong leadership in Williams and Douglas, and a hungry Sam.

 

Gase and his flunkie Dowell both need to get their acts together and bring us a better offense and a winning season.

He's got a LT, a 1# Receiver, plenty of Olinemen, Herndon is back. Backup running back, new speed receivers. A fit Sammy D.

It’s also going the wrong direction. But we’re at the bottom now so nowhere to go but up!

Same here... We can't jump to #27 offense this year and consider it a movement in the right direction. High teens, low 20's (very low) is where we need to be to believe the coaching is matching the talent being brought in. The OC needs to make a major step forward and stop being just a review specialist.

He's not the offensive genius we were told, but he's a good coach.  Imo, he could thrive in the CEO head coach role, with some input in the offensive game plan.

 

Didn't we score on the first drive in almost every game Sam played?

That's great game planning.  Hire a young stud OC and give Greg a big raise.  We'll be set.
