The Giants fixed Leonard Williams?

It's amazing thinking about how much top-end draft capital we sunk into DT/DE (and the Defense as a whole), and how little all those high picks really got us.

2008 - Vernon Gholston DE, 1st Round, 6th Pick - Bust

2010 - Kyle Wilson, CB, 1st Round, 29th Pick - Bust

2011 - Muhammad Wilkerson, DE, 1st Round, 30th pick - 2 good years in 7 (10.5 and 12 Sacks)

2012 - Quinton Coples, DE, 1st Round, 16th Pick - Bust

2013 - Dee Milliner, CB, 1st Round, 9th Pick - Bust

2013 - Sheldon Richardson, DE, 1st Round, 13th Pick - 1 good year in 4 (8 sacks), nutbar.

2014 -  Calvin Pryor, S, 1st Round, 18th Pick - Bust

2015 - Leonard Williams, DE, 1st Round, 6th Pick - Decent Run Stopper, Bust as a Pass Rusher (1x 7.0 Sack year, rest below 5).

2016 -  Darron Lee, LB, 1st Round, 20th Pick - JAG at best, gone after 3 seasons.

2017 - Jamal Adams, S, 1st Round, 6th Pick - All-Pro (more as a LB/DE than S) & Malcontent, netting a bounty of high draft picks when traded early in first contract.

2019 - Quinnen Williams, DT, 1st Round, 3rd Pick - TBD, first year was basically an average non-entity.

When people wonder why I am such a hardcore "Draft Offense" guy, it because the modern NFL is driven by Offense, not Defense, and we've been almost uniquely investing high-end draft capital, over and over and over again, trying to get a Pass Rusher most of all, and failing miserably.  One very good player over 12 drafts (Adams) who hated it here so much he forced his way out after only a few seasons.  Two flash-in-the-pan Pass Rushers (Richardson and Wilkerson), both of which ended badly.  And a bagful of busts and bad picks.

This is why I say the Defense had it's chance.  I want to see 11 #1 picks spent of OFFENSE over the next 12 years, and see how THAT works out for a change.  You know, maybe we'll score a few points!

Of course, if we REALLY want to weep, we could list all the WR's we've drafted over this same period of time, lol.  A horror show, but at least that horror is busted 4th rounders.....not busted 1st rounders, I guess.

Rules now dictate no matter how good your defense is, it figures to fail several times every game. Defenders can barely touch receivers, holding is barely called, and drop the QB too roughly and it's a 15 yard RTP. Other than a shutdown corner, or a pass rusher , the rest of a 2020 defense is scheme.

Forgot 2018, when we drafted the best QB in the last 5 years ...minus Lamar.

Thing is, they aren't even drafting impact defensive positions.   How many actual pass rushers in that group?   Just Ghost (who was epically bad).

How many 3-4 defensive ends do you need to draft?

Wilkerson played until he was paid.

Leonard never lived up to the hype.

Isnt it funny all the debate between Wilkerson and Heyward....seemed like we finally got one right. Meanwhile Wilkerson is barely hanging on the league and Heyward is still contributing...

Can't even say that at the moment.  He's currently a free agent, and his last snap in the league was way back on Sep 23, 2018.

Yep.  It would seem teams are waiting to see if he's healthy and what kind of league discipline he'll face for his DWI and drug charges back on March 2nd (his 2nd DWI charge in a year), but its still strange there's been no movement on that front whatsoever.

He took his $55M and ran.  Decent chance he'll be broke in a few years.

FWIW, Chad Pennington eventually did get stronger,  and he won Comeback Player of the Year, with the Dolphins.  Then he and the Dolphins fell apart..again.

The Leo trade was one of JD’s best moves so far.  His draft is not looking so hot.

Chad never got stronger in any the ways it counted

He stayed healthy and didnt break into pieces while a decent Dolphin team made it easy on him by playing the wildcat before anyone knew how to best defend it/

If it weren't for the dolphins playing well in that system, relied on Chad, they dont sniff the playoffs of division title

And this from a Chad fan

He’s getting double teamed every play!!! All he needs is some guys next to him to take pressure off!!! This is his year!!! A lot of his impact doesn’t show up on the stat sheet!!! ?

The guy was handled, many times, one on one, by street free agents.

i still don’t know how he not only pretty much robbed but finds a sucker to continue to do so....all the salary he has taken down.  I’m confused but will still raise a glass to him (with bewilderment).

Agreed. They lost their playoff game cause the Steelers knew Chad couldn’t throw past 15 yards and they just played their defense up.

Hopefully not from the same doctor that worked on Antonio Cromartie.

One of my favorite all time quotes from a Jets game. I forget what year it was but Cro got hurt and as the trainers were coming on the field a guy yells out but what about the kids. Classic ?

They overpaid us and then paid a guy who'd maybe be our 3rd best lineman. There's nothing to fix. He's the definition of a player who is what he is

Yep.  Kinda sad that the Giants give up a 3 and a 5 AND franchise tag money and are trying to "fix" a guy who has been in the league for 5 years.  He's supposed to be a top of the roster player.  He's not some project.  Like you say; he is what he is.
