NY Mets outfielder and former Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow retires from baseball

Justin Toscano
MLB Writer

During spring training in 2020, when asked about his goal of making it to the majors, Tim Tebow responded with this:

“It’d be a lie if I said that wouldn’t be super cool. Of course that would be special. But I wouldn’t say it would be a success or failure if that did or didn’t happen.”

Tebow referred to part of his life as "seasons." In that moment, he said, baseball was an important part of his life.

It's time for a new season.

Tebow, the former Heisman Trophy winner, announced Wednesday night that he is retiring from baseball. The outfielder made it to Triple A, but never the majors.

“It has been a pleasure to have Tim in our organization as he’s been a consummate professional during his four years with the Mets,” Mets president Sandy Alderson said in a statement. “By reaching the Triple-A level in 2019, he far exceeded expectations when he first entered the system in 2016 and he should be very proud of his accomplishments.”

Over three professional seasons, Tebow hit .223 with 48 doubles, three triples, 18 home runs and 107 RBI. He also scored 107 runs in 287 games.

Tebow, known for being a star quarterback for Urban Meyer at Florida, might be best known in baseball for hitting home runs in his first at-bats at different levels.

He did it in the Mets' instructional league soon after he signed in September 2016. He did it again in his first professional at-bat with Low-A Columbia. Then he began the 2018 season in Double A with a home run.

Tebow, now 33, made the Eastern League All-Star team in 2018. He played in Triple A in 2019. Because there was no minor league season in 2020, he did not see any organized action last year.

Tebow had been invited to big league camp in 2021 before retiring from baseball.

Tebow's life had purpose away from baseball, though. In 2010, he created the Tim Tebow Foundation, which, according to its website, aims to bring "faith, hope and love to those needing a brighter day in their darkest hour of need."

The foundation serves in many ways, including through its Night to Shine Program, which gives children with special needs a prom night experience. In 2019, the Tim Tebow Foundation went to all 50 states and 34 countries — including Italy and France — to do so.

Tebow experienced success on the football field, but he always considered his service more important. He never defined himself by what he did on the field.

“I don’t define myself that way, but through my faith and my relationship with God,” Tebow told The Record/NorthJersey.com in an interview during spring training in 2020. “But then also, in what I want to do for humanity and the world and the change in which I want to help bring and be part of."

He soon added: "Championships and trophies are great, but it’s what you do with the platform because, ultimately, a championship or a trophy doesn’t change anyone’s life.

On the aforementioned day in Port St. Lucie, Florida, when he spoke to reporters, Tebow also said: “I feel like one of the biggest tragedies in life is when you look back and you were successful at something that really doesn’t matter. And I don’t want to do that. I want to go after things that really matter.”

Now that baseball is over, the possibilities for his future are endless.

Good.  Opens up a non-roster invite spot for spring training, which he did not deserve.

Cmon man. Half those minor league players dont even deserve to be there anyways.

If anyone deserved any open shot it was this guy. The man literally did everything right and gave maximum dedication and on top of that clearly knew when to just give it up.

Tebow has succeeded at far more in the sporting world than most of those guys will ever even fantasize about.

Cool story.  Spring training is supposed to be about guys who have a shot at being useful to the team and have earned their spot with their play, not .163 hitters (in AAA) with stiff hips who are only there to produce jersey sales.

See ya, Tebow.

And he's better at baseball than zero of them.

If anyone cared about baseball anymore, this might matter.

Mets should have at least let him get an at bat in the majors.  Cheapskates.

This pretty much sums it up. There are players who have been fighting for opportunities like that all of their lifes and who don't have the luxury of having made almost 10 million dollars as an athlete.

Tebow could have been a successful qb in this league but no team was ever willing to commit to running an offense that plays to his strengths.  Denver did it for one year and tebow had success.

Maybe if he came out now someone would do it.  but 10 years ago the nfl wasnt ready for it.

Disagree. Tebow didn't have the arm talent or the speed to be a quality starter in the NFL.

I feel like this was the single move that unraveled the competitive Rex Jets and Sanchez.  Yea 2011 wasn’t great but it was 8-8 and certainly salvageable.  Instead this brought the clown show circus to Florham Park.  For the life of me I cannot understand how any competent GM thought this would be a good move for a young qb trying to develop and team chemistry overall.

Honestly doubt he had any input into this decision, just like he had no input on bringing Revis back as a FA a few years later. Those were all on the ex-ambassador to the UK.

I think tannenbaum very much liked the splashy move so I find it hard to believe he had little say.
