Rex was indeed a great spark for the team initially as head coach, but the more he put his mark on it..the worse it became.  Of course then he was quickly fired by Buffalo - completely inept as their head coach.

there were behind the scenes political issues going in in the  buffalo locker room when rex was there in buffalo.

with the jets, he did not fail as a HC.  he failed as defacto GM.  The talent level of the roster declined.  Rex would still be an excellent HC so long as there was a strong and competent GM backing him up.  Tanny was known to be a push over.

Rex also ruined their defense - which was top of the league before he got there and middle of the pack or worse by the time he left.

Rex has two winning seasons in 8 total seasons as a head coach for the Jets and Bills

The Jets killed the Golden Goose with Rex.  If you gave him the right roster, he would organize and motivate his coaches and players and win games.

When we gave him too much latitude to chose the players, we gave him the rope with which to hang himself.

Saleh has also go along with the plan set forth by his superiors.  Hopefully his career has not been irreparably damaged.

Rex was a fraud and those teams were smoke and mirrors.

Herm Edwards was better then Rex Ryan.

There’s literally no difference between the myopic Jets fan that has zero frame of reference for comparison to the rest of the NFL and calls for us to re-hire Rex - and the version that says don’t hire Rex, because some other failed Jets coach was better.

Zero credibility for ‘em both.

I don't hate him. I actually LOVED Rex when he was here and was devastated he didn't work out. But listen, he coached here 6 years. The last 4 were non-winning, non-playoff years. The roster deteriorated under his watch. You can argue it went from top 5 to bottom 5. There are good reasons he was fired. It's not because people didn't like him. It's because he had some glaring weaknesses as a head coach that ultimately became fatal.

And if you don't believe me, ask Bills fans what they think of Rex. He went there and laid a huge egg, ruining their top 3 defense in the process.

Bills fans collectively have less teeth in their heads than that Kintner boy from Jaws has in his ass. Why would I ask them for advice on anything?

Eh, funny but not much in the way of a cogent argument

The biggest mistake Tanny and Rex made was expecting Sanchez to take the next step in 2011 to cover up for the team's deficiencies as they lost good players because they didn't have the cap space to keep them. That led to Idzik's reign of error.

We had weak GMs who gave Rex too much say in the draft and roster makeup.  Let Rex run the roster and NOTHING else.  I'm losing respect for Saleh, slowly and steadily.

This.

Bring Mangini and Tanny back to build the roster, and let Rex coach them.

I partially agree. They Should have stuck with ground and pound until they could get a better QB. But that was Rex’s issue - he didn’t have any conviction about the offense.

But they also didn’t just get hurt by cap space - They also made a lot of really bad personnel decisions like Mason and Burress over Edwards and Cotch and letting Tony Richardson go.

I hate to say it, but I miss Rex...

He is a much better HC than Saleh...

The Jets have been trying to fill his shoes for a decade...

I supported his firing, but he may have gotten a raw deal with Idzik, Tebow, etc...

He is available,,,

I'm sad to have to agree with you. However I think he is a complete boob and he couldn't right this ship.

Saleh rubs me the wrong way. I feel like he’s scripts everything he says. All those stories during HK and the way he answers certain questions during press conferences.

If Rex had even a mediocre QB, we would’ve won the Super Bowl. I would take Rex over Saleh immediately.

Rex Ryan started this period of horrible Jets football in 2011.  His last good season as a coach was 14 years ago.  This is a ridiculous thread.

He’s the greatest coach in the history of football to some Jets fans. That’s how sad this franchise  has been under woodys leadership.

Agree with the exception of 2010. The team went 11-5 and had the fifth best record in the NFL that year. They lost the division to NE who won 14 games that season with the best record in the league.

That's the year we beat the Pats and Colts back to back before  losing to the Steelers

Before “not being prepared for the Steelers” Rex was still patting himself on the back for the pats win on Thursday before the Steelers game.

“Ruined the defense”?  Woody refused to sign any corners in 2014 with $30 million in cap room and Revis UFA.

You and @Maxman like to try and subvert the authority wielded by The Committee but alas you cannot. None of your coup attempts will work, and no man named as your false Captain will stand before us.

Cool story bro.

Also, stop sliding into my DMs asking for help. 😂

This is true facts and understated by everyone who rooted for Rex. Long story short: Woody is easily manipulated and Rex feasted on him like a fat vampire and turned the Jets org back into a circus after Mangini had set it back on good footing by freezing Woody out of the football side. Rex brought Woody back into the football side and, well…

—2012: Rex gets everything he wants from Tannenbaum but knifes him after the 2012 Circus year because he drafted Stephen Hill and traded for Tebow against his wishes, and failing to overpay for all-time free agent bust Nnamdi Asomugha. But the real death knell to Tannenbaum’s Jets career: he fired Ryan Family toadie Jeff Weeks before the season. Rex hires his buddy Tony Sparano to be the OC for reasons unexplained. Also recall that Bill Callahan was on that staff and refused to re-up his contract because he was a serious football man. Mike Pettine, Mike Westhoff, and Matt Cavanaugh all go running for the exits after the season

—2013: The Korn Ferry Debacle. Zero GM candidates wanted the Jets job because Rex had become unhinged and all-powerful, all with the blessing of Woody Johnson. Korn Ferry tries to and fails to hire a slew of prominent GM candidates, and as a result they end up with John Idzik, who is a business minded bean-counter who Rex immediately tried to bully into submission. Rex re-hires Ryan Family Stooge Jeff Weeks. Idzik tries to reset the team: trades Revis for two firsts, trades a 4 for Chris Ivory, drafts consensus CB1 Dee Milliner, drafts DT1 Sheldon Richardson, drafts QB1 Geno Smith, drafts Oday Aboushi. Rex, like the giant rat baby he is, uses Manish to trash Idzik every step of the way for moving Revis. Jets go 8-8 by going 3-1 down the stretch behind an improving Geno Smith.

2014—Idzik tries to flush every turd out of the organization for a rebuild year (note: 2015 would be the Jameis/ Mariota draft). Cuts Santonio Holmes, Cromartie, Mark Sanchez. Rex is inconsolable because Idzik won’t sign free agent bust Dominique Rodgers Cromartie. Idzik produces a very bad draft class: Calvin Pryor, Jace Amaro, Dexter McDougle, etc. Both men drag each other to hell during a 4-12 season.

<2014 Offseason: Rex tries to weasel his way into the Falcons job by circumventing the wishes of Falcons GMs Dimitroff and Pioli and going straight to Arthur Blank. Blank gets so fed up with Pioli and Dimitroff’s warnings about the situation that he effectively demotes both men, but ultimately relents when Blank’s mother dies and he entrusts the hiring process back to Pioli. Rex is told to take a hike. In response, Rex flies to Florida to beg Terry Pegula directly for the Bills job, again circumventing the team’s GM and personnel staff. Pegula—who was coming off of being burned alive by Doug Marrone—gets snowed by Rex and hires him. Rex immediately gets Doug Whaley fired, but doesn’t last two years in Buffalo.>

2015-2020–The Jets job in 2015—both HC and GM— is radioactive and the Johnsons can’t hire anybody. Doug Marrone thinks he has a verbal agreement to come in and be the HC/GM, but Manish slimes the sh*t out of him in the NYDN daily, which scares Woody off. Ron Wolf and Charlie Casserly are hired to find a new GM but have trouble convincing anyone to even interview here. They end up with former Casserly intern Mike Maccagnan, who was an anonymous back-bencher from the Texans. A fellow executive was quoted at the time saying that Maccagnan was deeply unqualified to be a GM and that the job would be “too big for him.” Maccagnan would go on to be among the worst GMs in history. Hires the respected Todd Bowles, but sticks him with Sam Darnold. Fires Bowles, can’t hire anyone else. Mike McCarthy reportedly has interest in the job, but wants $8 mil per and full control. Manish smears the sh*t out of McCarthy, Woody is scared off, McCarthy sits out the year. Maccagnan gets stuck with Gase, Gase heroically exposes Maccagnan, Gase helps reset the organization and brings in his bud Joe Douglas. Manish—pissed at losing his #1 source in Mike Maccagnan—slimes Gase every second of every day, and Gase is fired after two seasons.

2021–Douglas has a horrific first draft and hires Saleh, but his #1 accomplishment around this time was filing a grievance for harassment against Manish Mehta, who was showing up to Douglas’ son’s Little League games. The NYDN—in a despicable move—hires blogger Charles McDonald (who lives in Atlanta) to “cover” the Jets. McDonald soon quits and reveals that the NYDN was using McDonald to feed Manish Mehta Jets content, which Mehta would publish under his own byline. Mehta is fired by the NYDN.
