In the interest of your safety, please put down your coffee. Maybe sit, even, this news is so shocking.

The Jets might make another move at quarterback.

Coach Rex Ryan hinted that something was up during an appearance with ESPN Radio’s “Mike and Mike” show.

When asked if they planned to keep their current four quarterbacks, Ryan said he  was “not 100 percent sure”, adding, “We’ll see how it plays out over the next few days.”

That’s only going to fuel speculation, whether about the health of former starter Mark Sanchez, or the roster spot of newcomer Brady Quinn, whose salary becomes guaranteed if he’s on the roster Sunday.

Sanchez is expected to miss at least this week and next with a shoulder injury, though they’re calling him “day-to-day.” General Manager John Idzik said Wednesday he didn’t think injured reserve was an option.

“We’re not looking at that,” Idzik said, via Rich Cimini of ESPNNewYork.com. “We’re looking at Mark continuing his rehabbing. We said it’s day-to-day. It’s very unpredictable. Mark knows his body better than anybody else. He’s working very hard and so, hopefully, we’ll get him back here soon.”

If it’s going to be soon, they probably wouldn’t need Quinn hanging around, since it’s clear Geno Smith’s going to start and get a chance to make the job his own. They also have Matt Simms, but as with all things Jets, it’s impossible to know what’s coming next.

Wrecks has less than zero input on any of this. Might as well ask the old lady taking your packing pass Sunday.

Just going to cut Quinn today or tomorrow so they don't have to pay him full year when Sanchez comes back

Sure sounds that way.  With them deciding to make Simms the #2 this week, there's really no reason to believe they'd have Quinn active on gameday and thus no particular reason to keep him on the roster.  Even if Sanchez isn't quite ready, they can bring him back next week.  It's not like they're particularly scared of another team scooping him up.

I agree. Most likely move. They already named Simms #2.

Quinn is not making that much- though

Yeah, but why pay him for a full season if you only need him -maybe- for a couple weeks?

Is Sanchez ending up on IR still a possibility?

I'd be surprised. The Jets are paying him $8.25M this year whether he plays a down or not. I know he sucks and all, but I'd guess that Woody would rather Sanchez be on the roster for that money.

Honestly all these speculation articles are stories out of nothing. Of course we aren't sure about our QBs none of them have ever played an NFL game!! If they all get in there and they all suck we are gonna try and find someone. Rex is trying to win now to save his job and people swear he is okay cruising to a 4-12 season?! Get out of here...

Can they cut Sanchez while he is injured?

cut quinn. geno starts simms is #2, and kerley is emergency #3 qb until sanchy comes back

I'm betting this might be it for week 1, and then re-sign Quinn on Tuesday to backup until Sanchez is back and see if he picks up the O.  These guys all suck, but we have a system now.  One of them may suck considerably less at running it and it might be a surprise who.  Nick Foles lost the starting job in Philly, but I haven't heard any chatter about him being traded.

Jets considering releasing and re-signing Brady Quinn to avoid guaranteed contract

BY Seth Walder

The Jets currently have four quarterbacks on their roster, but on Friday Rex Ryan may have briefly touched on the possibility that a change could be on the horizon. Asked on ESPN Radio if the Jets planned to carry four quarterbacks throughout the season, Ryan said, “I’m not 100% if that’s gonna be the case or not, but for now we have four quarterbacks, and we’ll see how it shakes out in the next few days or so.”

It was the “next few days” part that indicated Gang Green could be considering a move. Indeed, they are. According to a source, the Jets have discussed cutting recently-signed quarterback Brady Quinn before his contract becomes guaranteed as a “vested veteran” at 4 p.m. on Saturday. They would be free to pick him up again on Monday and keep him on their roster without guaranteeing they would have to pay his full season’s salary.

The move would make sense for two reasons. First, Quinn likely wouldn’t be active for Sunday’s game anyway since Ryan generally only likes to suit up two quarterbacks. Those two QBs will be Geno Smith and Matt Simms. Second, Quinn probably will remain on the Jets only until Mark Sanchez is able to return from his shoulder injury.
