AP Source: Law enforcement official sent copy of Ray Rice tape to NFL executive in April

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — A law enforcement official says he sent a video of Ray Rice punching his then-fiancee to an NFL executive three months ago, while league officers have insisted they didn't see the violent images until this week.

The person played The Associated Press a 12-second voicemail from an NFL office number on April 9 confirming the video arrived. A female voice expresses thanks and says: "You're right. It's terrible."

The law enforcement official, speaking to the AP on condition of anonymity because of the ongoing investigation, says he had no further communication with any NFL employee and can't confirm anyone watched the video. The person said they were unauthorized to release the video but shared it unsolicited, because they wanted the NFL to have it before deciding on Rice's punishment.

The NFL has repeatedly said it asked for but could not obtain the video of Rice hitting Janay Palmer — who is now his wife — at an Atlantic City casino in February.

The league says it has no record of the video, and no one in the league office had seen it until TMZ released it. When asked about the voicemail Wednesday, NFL officials repeated their assertion that no league official had seen the video before Monday.

The person said he sent a DVD copy of the security camera video to an NFL office and included his contact information. He asked the AP not to release the name of the NFL executive, for fear that the information would identify the law enforcement official as the source.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell initially suspended Rice for two games following the February incident, but the Ravens released Rice on Monday and the NFL suspended him indefinitely after the website TMZ released the video.

Goodell told CBS on Tuesday that "no one in the NFL, to my knowledge" had seen a new video of what happened on the elevator until it was posted online.

"We assumed that there was a video. We asked for video. But we were never granted that opportunity," Goodell said.

In a memo to the NFL's 32 teams on Wednesday, Goodell said that the league asked law enforcement for the video, but not the casino. "In the context of a criminal investigation, information obtained outside of law enforcement that has not been tested by prosecutors or by the court system is not necessarily a reliable basis for imposing league discipline," he wrote.

The video, shown to the AP on Monday, is slightly longer than the TMZ version, and includes some audio.

Rice and Janay Palmer — now Janay Rice — can be heard shouting obscenities at each other, and she appears to spit at Rice right before he throws a brutal punch. After she collapses, he drags her out of the elevator and is met by some hotel staff. One of them can be heard saying, "She's drunk, right?" And then, "No cops."

Rice had been charged with felony aggravated assault in the case, but in May he was accepted into a pretrial intervention program that allowed him to avoid jail time and could lead to the charge being purged from his record. A prominent New Jersey lawmaker called Tuesday for that decision to be reviewed.

Hours after portions of the video were made public by TMZ, Goodell suspended Rice indefinitely and Baltimore terminated his contract. He had originally been suspended for two games, and team officials had praised him for his apologies and actions after his arrest for aggravated assault.

Goodell and team officials said they were taking more severe action because of the violence in the video.

The whole thing got screwed because the woman took a turn and went completely against it.  She obviously did it for the money, because he most likely promised to get married without a pre-nup, and that meant she was pretty much set for life as long as he continued to get paychecks.  And that's the sole reason why she's upset now as well, because she did all this to minimize the damage it had on Rice's career, and now it's screwed up anyway, and she can't have any of the future earnings that he was set to earn if he doesn't actually have a job.  

 

What did people expect?  She was knocked out cold on the floor when we first found out about this.  Did people think he smacked her with a pillow, and she had an asthma attack from the organic feathers?  The video was pretty much what you expected it to be when you first found out.  If anything, it made her look a bit more like the instigator than I was expecting as well.  The NFL probably watched the video, contacted Rice and his then wife, and she spun a story about misunderstandings and how she was the root cause of it, so they went lite on him since she was taking blame on for it herself, even publicly.   

 

To me, in a unfortunate series of events for three crooks that came crashing down.  He's a slimeball for punching her like that (remember kids....smack a clam, open hands....jk) and then showing no remorse whatsoever.  She's a crook because she wanted to take advantage of the situation and secure her financial future by getting hitched and therefore took most of the blame in this case.   And the NFL is a crook, because they didn't want to damage their product by having one of it's somewhat premier players suspended for a long period of time, so they tried to sweep this under the radar. and it backfired on all of them.  And since I don't have any parties involved, I'd love to see how this turns out.  

 

On a side note, if this was a Jets player, that video would've been playing on Times Square, 5 hours after the initial store broke. Francessa would make it his new introduction music video, and the player would be sent to a foreign country to amputate his arm for committing such a heinous crime against humanity.

I'll believe he gets ousted when I see it. Dude had made all those owners more money than they thought they'd ever see.

 

He has made the owners a ton of money they never thought they'd ever see.

 

But when public reaction turns he becomes a liability to that money making ability. So he goes if this stays in the news cycle for some period of time.

I don't think Rice's wife deserves so much scorn.  She has a small daughter with him, has been with him since High School, and may actually love him and want to keep the family together.  Even if she cursed him/spit at him she didn't deserve a left cross that could have killed her.  People may think that she should leave him but it is common in cases of domestic abuse that the victim voluntarily stays.  I feel sorry for her and wouldn't portray her as just a gold digger.

Thats not really proof of anything yet. I dont trust anonymous sources because who knows what is made up or real.  How do we know the voicemail was about the extended version of the DVD and not about the hallway video that they did see? They need to prove somehow that the DVD actually was received by someone at the NFL, and the Ginger Hammer knew about it.  If one of his lackeys did receive the DVD and didnt tell anyone, thats not on Goodell.  Thats on the person who hid it.  But everyone wants to jump all over this saying Goodell knew.  Ok. Wheres the proof he knew?  Would be nice if someone in the media would ask these questions instead of jumping to conclusions and burning Goodell at the stake.

Why is sports talk radio spending more time on this story (and stuff like the Redskins name change, etc.) than actual discussion of sports?

 

Why is the weak punishment of Ray Rice from the NFL a bigger story than the weak punishment of Ray Rice by the criminal justice system?

 

Because its fun to tear down successful organizations and people.  And it gives us an opportunity to show our moral superiority over these ass hats.

Funny thing is Rice has probably devoted more of his time doing good things than the dopes that call into sports radio combined have. One alcohol infused awful decision- life over. It's sad.

Weird thing to cover up, really.

Less weird is law enforcement, who are and should be getting more sh1t than the NFL for giving Rice a cake deal, could be covering their asses. Could be trying to save face for not giving the NFL the video and to divert attention from all that want to know why they didn't press charges.

Then again, Atlantic City? They wouldn't ever do something this shady.

Exactly, it would take 24 owners to get rid of Goodell.

What 24 owners do not like making money head over heels?

 

WHile I tend to agree, how could a guy that is smart F up so bad if these reports are true.

 

While I believe he is safe and might not even be culpable in this video thing, the owners might make him fall on the sword (withh a retirement package) for the sake of the league.
