Bruce Carter

By Glenn Naughton

After hosting veteran linebacker Bruce Carter last week, it appears a deal may be imminent between the Jets and the former second-round draft pick.

Jenna Laine of Sports Talk 1040 in Tampa is reporting that Carter is expected to sign with Gang Green “barring any unforeseen circumstances”.

Carter could be more than just a depth signing if given the opportunity to compete with Erin Henderson for the starting job alongside David Harris in the middle of the Jets defense.

After being chosen in the 2nd round of the 2011 NFL draft by the Dallas Cowboys, Carter appeared in 10 games as a rookie, but was called on to start 24 contests over the course of the following two seasons, racking up 178 tackles, 3 sacks and 5 interceptions.  The five interceptions were all during the 2014 season.

After signing with the Bucs as a free agent after the 2014 season, Carter started just three games before losing his spot to rookie linebacker Kwon Alexander.

If he does come on board, don’t be surprised if he ends up stealing reps from Erin Henderson, the same way Henderson did to last season’s starter Demario Davis as the season progressed.

I like it.  His early success came at ILB in the 3-4, and he helps provide some depth a position at which they have none.  Certainly not a big move by any means, but the kind of stuff you want to be doing at this stage in FA, doing your best to fill in as many needs as you can before draft day.

  • 32 5/8"ARM LENGTH
  • 241LBS.WEIGHT

OVERVIEW

Carter is an excellent athlete, but he tore his ACL in November and has a long road to recovery. He is an explosive athlete that takes proper angles in run support and has excellent speed to make plays from sideline-to-sideline. He is a very fluid, transitions with ease and is very effective dropping into coverage. He struggles to disengage from bigger blockers in and must add more bulk to become stouter against the run. If Carter recovers fully from his injury, he has the athleticism to develop into a very productive weak side linebacker and may still be an early Day 2 pick.

ANALYSIS

STRENGTHS

Carter is a tall muscular player that runs very well. Flashes great explosiveness at the point of attack and has the closing burst to make plays in the backfield. Drops smoothly in coverage and possesses the fluidity to stick with backs and tight ends in man coverage. Very disciplined player that maintains leverage and does not bite on play fakes.

WEAKNESSES

Lacks the bulk to consistently take on blocks and struggles to disengage. Possesses less than ideal instincts and is a step slow reacting to the play. Not overly aggressive and waits for the play to come to him at times. Does not have a repertoire of counter moves when pass rushing and is too easily stymied.

One trend that I'm starting to notice with Macc is that he likes to sign guys that were drafted relatively highly but have not panned out in the pros yet. See Carter (2nd rounder) and last year, Carpenter (1st rounder) and Gilchrist (2nd rounder).

Another pre-draft profile.  Not sure what his reputation is in the pros.

STRENGTHS

Bruce has the size, strength, speed and agility that all teams are looking for in an outside linebacker.  He is a very good cover linebacker who is able to cover man-to-man most tight ends and running backs coming out from the backfield.  Bruce has a good burst to the ball and has nice catch-up speed to bring down players from behind.  He shows solid leadership skills, an understanding of his assignments and works well in the defensive system in which he plays at the college level.

CONCERNS

The biggest problem that I see when Bruce plays is that he does not use his arms to engage and shed blocks in the running game.  This might be because of injuries, but if Bruce has been injured previously and plays this way to avoid further injury, he probably should not be playing.  Bruce does not handle cut blocks very well at all because he doesn't use his arms to fend players off his legs.  When an offensive lineman pulls around Bruce's side for a sweep, Bruce meets the block with his shoulder and crumbles.

BOTTOM LINE

I know Bruce has had some injuries, but playing without using his arms and hands just doesn't do it for me,.  I think Bruce would be fine in a nickel package defense as a part-time cover linebacker.  However, as soon as his opponents find out that he plays football like the Venus Di Milo statue, they are going to run straight at him and dare him to tackle them.  I know Bruce will workout and show the athletic talent to be an NFL linebacker, but as I always say, "it takes more than talent to play in the NFL" and I know for a fact that it takes arms!

Those attributes are certainly what we need. Athelticism and mainly speed are what our LB core have desperately lacked. Hopefully he still has it.

Harris and the defensive line can more than make up for any deficiencies he has in the run game.

He had an ACL injury at some point in his pro career but with only being in the pros for 5 years, im sure he will be fine as far as speed goes.

He was a prime grade A prospect coming into his draft year, possibly a top 10 guy then had a bad knee injury,  Looked like the cowboys got a steal when he was 1st drafted and his 1st year or so.  Might at this point be motivated by contracts by the look of it.  might get a good year out of him.

I wish they had tied him up for a second year cheap in case he has a good year.  Same as it would have been nice to extend Fitz last year before he increased his value.

Shoulda'.... woulda'..... coulda'

I think he signed a 1 yr. to play behind a great DL so he can rack up some sacks and get a bigger contract next yr.

He's rebuilding his value. That's what I like about Mac....

he'll get what he can out of a player and move onto(hopefully) some younger/cheaper  guys who the team has developed.

What increased value? Did you mean the one, 32 teams in the NFL are offering him.

Agreed.  Even though they brought Henderson back, they did risk losing him when three other teams got in on the bidding.  A two-year team-friendly deal would've been nice, but with all of the projected cap dollars for next season, I suppose bringing him back shouldn't be much of an issue if his play warrants it.

If they trade Mo, all of a sudden this run defense is no longer "elite" I think.  Especially so without Pace too.

But that's NOT necessarily a bad thing.  The reality of the NFL today is you need sideline-to-sideline LBs who can make plays with their athleticism.  I like David Harris but he really needs a speed LB who can defend the pass.

You don't need the best run D to win in the NFL.  What's needed are a solid secondary and a pass rush.

I'd agree. Was said with the assumption he'd stay. Snacks was a huge loss too.

I think it's something we've really taken for granted. Yes pass defence is more important these days but there's nothing more infuriating than being dominated in the running game. I remember those Mangini years with D-Rob being manhandled and running backs just having their way - Sickening.

I think with Sheldon, Leonard Williams, and McClendon things should be competent enough.  Harris also stout against the run.

Last year he might have accepted 5mill as an extension rather than the 7-8mill he's got on the table this year.

Yep.  You certainly won't hit on all of those types, but many times, they're talented players who were just in the wrong situation, or perhaps even just needed the right coach(es) to mature under.  Never know.  At the very least you would think they have the ability to help out on Special Teams.  Relatively low risk guys with upside is an easy way to build up the back end or middle part of your roster.
