kelly
With the New York Jets, it always comes back to the quarterback position. Let's tackle the future in our Week 8 mailbag : @RichCimini if the Jets have a top 10 pick this year, would they draft a QB even though they have Petty and Hack on the roster#jetsmail 11:55 AM - 28 Oct 2016 @RichCimini: If they have a top-10 pick ? I think that's pretty much a lock. The problem is ... well, there are a couple of problems. First of all, you need to be in the top two or three, sometimes higher, to get a crack at a true franchise quarterback. You saw it last year, with the Los Angeles Rams and Philadelphia Eagles trading up to get Jared Goff and Carson Wentz at 1 and 2, respectively. If a quarterback is the real deal, he doesn't last too long. The biggest concern for quarterback-needy teams is there might not be a blue-chip talent in the draft. Our man Todd McShay says there's no quarterbacks worthy of a first-round pick, let alone a top-10 pick. He said Clemson's Deshaun Watson, Miami's Brad Kaaya and Notre Dame's DeShone Kizer are Day 2 selections. Look, we know how this works. Come draft season, desperate teams will fall in love with one (or more) of these guys, pushing them up draft boards. That tends to happen when coaches (and, yes, owners) get involved in the evaluation process. If the Jets are sitting in the top 10 and they have a strong conviction on a quarterback, they should take him. They'd catch some flak, especially after using a second-round pick on Christian Hackenberg, but you can't build a team in fear of the consequences. The Jets never will win a championship until they solidify the quarterback position and there are no sure things on the current roster. Now, do I think general manager Mike Maccagnan would pull the trigger on a first-round quarterback? He likes to stockpile quarterbacks, but I have my doubts. I don't think he'd bail on Hackenberg after one year (GMs hate to admit mistakes) and I don't think he'd want to go into 2017 with three kids at the position -- Hackenberg, Bryce Petty and the draft pick. They will need a veteran presence, a hold-the-fort guy, if you will. Plus, if he agrees with McShay's assessment of the position, he wouldn't want to reach for a need -- although that's what he did with Hackenberg. Let's see how the season plays out. Petty probably will get a chance to play at some point, maybe even Hackenberg, and that could provide some answers. But, sitting here on Oct. 29, my answer is I'd be surprised if they picked a quarterback that high. It's not like they don't have other needs. > http://www.espn.com/blog/new-york-jets/post/_/id/64371/jets-headed-toward-top-10-pick-so-prepare-for-plenty-of-qb-buzz
Larz
they will pick outside of any potential special player, be it QB, pass rusher or OT they will be looking at DE, DT, CB, S and WR or the 2nd/3rd best pass rusher or OT beat those browns baby ! flgreen
Got to agree with Cimini here. Some interesting QB's in this draft, but no body I would spend a top 10 pick on. I'm a Canes fan, and do way would I draft Kaaya top 10. Then again I thought it was insane taking Wentz at 2, so what do I know
varjet
When you don't have a proven franchise QB, i think there are 3 things you can do when you pick in the 1st Round: 1) You can pick the best QB that is available. 2) You can trade up (for an enormous amount of compensation) to pick a QB that you absolutely believe will be your franchise QB. It really needs to be absolute belief, not a flyer. You can take a flyer on your pick without trading up. 3) You can pass on the best QB. That is what people think the Jets did last year. I think Macc thinks he was savvy and picked the best qb available in the entire draft, just did it in the second round. WIth the NFL rules changes, becoming a passing league, etc., QB are outside of the BPA analysis. If there are QBs potentially able to be a franchise QB, they are going first. If a team like Cleveland does not want to pick them, someone will trade up to pick them. A QB like Flacco, Rodgers or Rothesberger (or Pennington) is not dropping to the middle of the round. So, I would not advocate throwing the season now-the Jets are still in it. But meaningless wins at the end of the season that drop your pick-I don't get those. I am a strong proponent of taking a risk on a potential QB. Once you have a franchise QB, then you can take BPA in the first round and take developmental QBS in the later rounds. I am a strong OPPONENT of trading up, unless it is really a sure thing. The record does show that the Jets trading up for Sanchez was followed (I did not say led) to 2 AFCCGs. The Giants traded up for Eli and won 2 Super Bowls (I don't think they get 3). Yes, we know where Tom Brady was picked.
LIJetsFan
If it was up to me I'd go into next season with Petty/Hack/draftee. I see no rationale for hiring some JAG FA hold the fort QB. Either you trust in your ability to draft or you don't, and if you don't then you should not be a GM. Time to grow a pair.

drdetroit
Not a great qb class this year. Better off signing Glennon and drafting someone in the 2nd or third round.

Shadetree
For the love of God, fix the defense!!! go ahead and take yet another flyer on a day 2 or day 3 QB, but please do not reach in the top 10.

I'm telling you guys right now, the best prospect in next yrs draft at QB is the kid from BC . He's big, athletic, has above average arm talent and was coached in a pro style offense at UK . Kid's a year 2 potential starter in the NFL in my opinion .

LionelRichie
with the remaining schedule I just don't see a top 10 pick so I have no idea what Cimini is talking about. mid-first / mid-second seems about right for some of these QB's. I think you probably throw Kelly's name in the mix as well. I would have no problem going into next season with Petty, Hack, Kelly. At that point we'd at least get a chance to commit to the rebuild and see what some of these kids can do.
