Do Jets have NFL’s best safety tandem in Jamal Adams, Marcus Maye?

The Jets’ defense took a big step forward with some key additions this offseason, including linebacker C.J. Mosley and defensive tackle Quinnen Williams.

But arguably the biggest strength of the unit comes on the back end, where there were absolutely no changes to the personnel. That’s because Jamal Adams and Marcus Maye have the two safety jobs all locked up for the foreseeable future.

Just how good is that tandem, though? Is it among the NFL’s best?

ProFootballFocus thinks so, ranking the Adams-Maye pairing No. 4 among the league’s safety partnerships.

Here’s what the analytics-driven sight had to say about the Jets’ top-tier safeties:

Jamal Adams exploded onto the scene as one of the league’s most versatile safeties a season ago. He played 137 snaps at edge defender, 172 snaps as a slot cornerback, 40 snaps as a wide cornerback, 489 snaps in the box and 281 snaps as a deep safety, and he earned grades north of 77.0 in all four facets of our defensive grading system. He produced a pressure rate of 28.2% as a pass-rusher — third among the 19 safeties with at 25 pass-rushing snaps — and he allowed a passer rating of just 67.3 on throws into his primary coverage.

Marcus Maye only managed 393 snaps in 2018, but he sure made his time on the field count. Through six games, Maye earned an impressive 81.7 overall grade thanks to strong showings in all facets of the game. However, he shined in coverage, where he allowed just 0.08 yards per snap and a catch once every 106.5 snaps while in coverage.

So, which three teams managed to top the Jets in the ranking? The Bears (Eddie Jackson and Ha-Ha Clinton Dix), Rams (Eric Weddle and John Johnson) and Ravens (Earl Thomas and Tony Jefferson) were ranked Nos. 1, 2 and 3, respectively.

It would seem, friends, as though the author answered the question within the body of the piece. Clearly, the Jets do not have the best "safety tandem" in "the league."

Doubtful. Jamal is amongst the very best Safeties today. However, with that said it's really hard to tell what the hell Maye is with how often he's injured? The simple fact is he looks really good in VERY limited playing time. So to say they are the best Safety tande? I think that's absurd. When they have a few years of injury free play complimenting each other's playing style, then, and only then could such a thing even be suggested.
