Dcat
Do the Houston Texans hire him? Steve Smith on Texans’ head coach candidate Josh McCown: ‘He sees the game a certain way’ Retired former Pro Bowl wide receiver Steve Smith is among teammates to endorse Josh McCown's candidacy for the Texans' head coach role. ByAaron Wilson January 28, 2022 Josh McCown played in the NFL long enough that he once handed the football off to Emmitt Smith for the final carry of the legendary running back’s Hall of Fame career. The retired longtime backup quarterback delivered a deep pass to wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald for the first of his 1,432 career receptions. Now, McCown is a real candidate for the Houston Texans’ head coach vacancy, and former teammates like Steve Smith Sr. believe he is capable of making the transition to coaching, despite having little experience as a coach. Josh McCown is ready to take on a coaching role after stepping back from football for a year During 17 years in the NFL, the Jacksonville, Texas, native and former Sam Houston standout saw the game from every possible vantage point. McCown, 42, was a starter, a backup, and operated as an extra coach on the field and in the meeting room for the likes of Kurt Warner, Anquan Boldin, Steve Smith Sr., Calvin Johnson, Warren Sapp, and Julius Peppers. He retired last year after having over 1,000 teammates across the league. Now, McCown is making his case to use his unique experience as a journeyman quarterback in his bid to become an NFL head coach. McCown recently interviewed for the Houston Texans’ head coaching vacancy for the second time in the past year. He is regarded as a strong contender for the job, albeit one following an unconventional path, according to league sources. McCown had a conversation with the Jacksonville Jaguars prior to his interview with the Texans, per sources, but it wasn’t a formal interview. Wanting to spend time with family during his first year of retirement after operating as a backup to Pro Bowl quarterback Deshaun Watson two seasons ago, McCown ultimately decided not to coach for the Texans last year after going through the interview process. Beerfish
In the world of the of you have to 'pay your dues'. No way he gets that job. Not to say it wouldn't be a good hire. I personally think for a HEAD coach you need to be the over seer of the team. Far too many head coaches, including pretty well every single guy the jets hire has his head buried on one side of the ball, despite nice lip service about having to look after the whole show. Some of the best coaches in this league did not have uber long resumes (Tomlin) or did not have a huge base in offense or defense (Harbaugh in Balt) 1

Very true but the lack of minority hirings (ignoring Bienemy) is a little ludicrous at this point. The Giants have never had a minority head coach. In all those years, they have never interviewed one minority option as qualified as Ray Handley, Ben Mcadoo and Joe Judge? 3 1

Say what you will about the Jonsons but they have been among the most progressive in head coach hires. They may not have been successful but there is definitely still a white bias for head coaches.

He may not be the championship level coach, but he may do more with less, and b) convince his QB to come back.

rex-n-effect
McCown might be a good hire for QB coach or an assistant OC but no way does it make sense to hand the guy a HC job with zero coordinator (or any meaningful coaching) experience. If McCown gets that job it's because he's been made a scapegoat to explain a bad season or why they had to purge Watson. If McCown has serious aspirations of coaching he shouldn't take the job if offered.
Snell41
I’ll say this-the man made a 17 year career out of being a backup. It’s really unprecedented when you think about it. His QB play was sufficient and easily replaced, but everywhere he went he was regarded incredibly highly by everyone in the locker room. He’s a natural leader of men. He communicates extremely well and he understands the game of football as good as anyone. I think as a league we’ve gotten to a point that having called an offensive or defensive playbook is more important than leadership quality. If Josh McCown hired the right OC and DC that call games in the image he felt worked best he would be an incredibly good HC. Coordinators are meant to be geniuses. They’re the guys that sit in film rooms all day and generally don’t relate to people well. So many times you end up with Gase, Ray Handley, Bowles…. On and on. Guys that can pick apart the detailed minutia of a football game are incredibly intelligent but they’re not always great motivators. They sit in booths while they’re players do battle. The position coaches are working day in and out in the trenches with the players while the coordinators gameplan. Sometimes owners should go with their guts, and I think McCown would be an awesome hire.Sent from my iPhone using JetNation.com mobile app
