Can the Jets still make the playoffs if they eliminate the bye?

To sum up my posts in multiple threads, the short answer to this question is no - the Jets cannot make the playoffs under any scenario because when multiple teams finish with the same record, ties are broken in the division first.

Sooooo.....

If the Jets win and the Pats lose, Pats/Jets/Phins all end up 8-9 and Pats win the three way tiebreaker based upon head-to-head-to-head records, making them finish 2nd in the East.

If the Steelers also lose, then both the Steelers and Browns would also be 8-9.  The Browns win that tie breaker because they would be 2-0 vs. the Steelers - officially finishing 3rd in the NFC North.

The league would then break the tie between the 8-9 Pats and the 8-9 Browns.

Pats win that tie breaker because they beat the Browns head to head earlier this year.

Yep, this is it.

Thank you

Nope...scratch everything I just said.  I'm an idiot!  ?

This would be the breakdown for only determining the 7th seed.

The Jets can STILL make the playoffs....holy sh*t...I'm an idiot.

So assume everything I wrote above is true....that breaks the tie for the 7th seed.

They would then do the same thing for all teams to break the tie for the 8th seed.

NE would already be in - so they're out of the equation.

Jets win the AFC East division tiebreaker over the Phins with the 2-0 sweep.

Jets would then win the tiebreaker with the Browns due to the miraculous comeback in week 2.

hahaha...we're in!

You are KILLING me. I literally just sat down and said, oh well, but at least I can move on and adopt a team for the playoffs.

Edit: we would also have to rely on Deshaun Watson to get us in. Kill us all now.

So to summarize the Jets are in if:

The league expands the playoffs to 8 teams

The Jets win

The Pats lose

The Steelers lose

Edit - Jags also have to win so that they win the division and Tenn falls to 7-10 - Jags win a three way tiebreaker between the 8-9 Jets/Jags/Browns.

Also - I'm an idiot.  (I'm sure this will get a lot of up votes)

They would just need a win and the Steelers and Titans to lose.

The Pats are irrelevant if this were to actually happen.

Do  the Jags also have to win?

if the Jags lose: Tenn and Jax are both 8-9 - Tenn gets the south title, while the Jags/Browns/Jets are all at 8-9 (after Pitt is eliminated in divisional tie-breaker).

Oh god damnit.....let me figure that out too...then it comes down to conference record because the Jets/Browns/Jags did not all play each other.

Yep....Jags would win the three way between the Jets, Browns, and Jags based upon a 7-5 conference record vs. 6-6 Jets and 5-7 Browns.

So we need

8 teams

Jets win

NE lose (although really irrelevant for the 8 seed)

Steelers lose and

Jags win

I think the Steelers win. They are not going to lose at home.

good chance jags get beat. I know the titans have looked like absolute crap/ but I Am not ready to throw the towel in on the them just yet

Jax should win at home, the Pitt/cle game is a toss up with watson.

Agreed about Steelers winning. I personally don't see Tenn winning in Jax with their QB situation tho.

Understood it does seem out there but I just get the feeling the jags are not yet ready and sh-t the bed

Definitely could happen to such a young team. Also, they have all the pressure on them and Vrabel is a really good coach. Also, the last week of the season is always pretty unpredictable.

Yes, pats become irrelevant at this point.

8 teams

Jets win

Steelers loss

Jags win
