JJ and Will

I have a great feeling about these two young guys.  JJ reminds me of Shawn Ellis…more all around player, great against the run.  Will has the tools to be more of a John Abraham type….bendy, twitchy, pure pass rusher.   These 2 guys are the truth, so excited to see this defense

Strange player comps.

Ellis was 6’5, 290,

and Abraham was JJ11’s size, which is 20lbs heavier than Will.

These guys should ......should take a lot of snaps but I fear loyalty to Lawson  and JFM is going to get in the way.  They should try and trade Bryce Huff at the end of camp.

Do I like the player?  Yes for sure but he got very low snap counts last year and we added a new guy in McDonald and Johnson is ready to take a big step.

Teams will be going no huddle with no O subs in an effort to eliminate the jets clear advantage provided by their crazy d line depth.
And they will pay dearly for that in the second half. ... At least I hope

Jets: 4 players with skyrocketing stock amid preseason

By Enzo Flojo Aug 17, 2023 at 9:15 PM EDT

The New York Jets are creating excitement in the 2023 NFL preseason as some of their players shine brightly. With the new season just around the corner, the stocks of Jermaine Johnson, Zaire Barnes, Will McDonald IV, and Malik Taylor are soaring high. These players have really impressed everyone with their skills and potential. They have caught the attention of coaches, fans, and experts. In this article, we'll take a closer look at their outstanding performances and talk about what we can expect from the Jets in the 2023 NFL season.

1. Jermaine Johnson

The Jets made a smart move by trading up to pick Jermaine Johnson in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft. They had hoped that he'd become a key part of their defense for many years. During his rookie season, Johnson didn't make a huge splash, but he did manage to show his potential in the limited time he got to play. As he enters his second season, the Jets are counting on him to step up his game.

Johnson has been working hard with the first-string defense for most of the summer, even getting more chances than Carl Lawson. Lawson was dealing with a back injury and missed a few practices. However, even when he was okay, Johnson was getting more time with the starters. The Jets are likely going to rotate their defensive ends, but Johnson is making a strong argument to get many more defensive snaps he had last season.

2. Zaire Barnes

Since linebackers CJ Mosley and Quincy Williams didn't play in the Jets' previous preseason game, Barnes got a lot of playing time in a recent game. He made the most of his chance. Barnes made the first tackle for the Jets in that game and ended up leading the team with eight tackles. He made seven tackles on his own and had one tackle that stopped the opponent behind the line of scrimmage. It was quite an impressive show of force for someone on the second unit.

3. Will McDonald IV

The Jets put a lot of pressure on the Carolina quarterbacks, Bryce Young, and Matt Corral, in their preseason matchup. They even managed to sack the quarterbacks five times, including a great play where Bruce Hector caused a fumble by sacking the quarterback. First-round pick Will McDonald IV was also dominant. He got one sack, two hits on the quarterback, and he created pressure five times in just 18 plays. He was solid when the other team was running the ball, and he was a real problem for them when they were passing.

4. Malik Taylor

Undrafted rookie Jason Brownlee caught a lot of attention early in the summer and seemed like he was on his way to becoming the Jets' sixth wide receiver. Having said that, let's not forget about Malik Taylor.

Taylor has been quietly having a really impressive summer. He was on the receiving end of a long throw by Zach Wilson in a preseason game last Thursday. He's not new to Aaron Rodgers and Nathaniel Hackett either. He spent time with both of them in Green Bay. Taylor's speed and experience with Rodgers and Hackett could give him a chance to earn a spot on the roster.

We can't be sure if the Jets will have six wide receivers. However, if they do, Taylor might have a bit of an advantage over Brownlee right now. He's definitely improved his chances a lot in the past few weeks.

With Lawson and Clemons here, I think Huff could be trade bait.  Huff and Bam Knight or Huff and Carter; for an offensive tackle?

More likely to be traded for a 2024 pick than a player. Any OL on offer probably has more flaws than the guys we have now.

Is Huff still under team control next season? If they can put an x round tender on him, they wouldn't trade him for a pick.

In that case let him play and do well, then you get the pick anyway.

He was an RFA this offseason - 2nd round tender - and will be an unrestricted FA after the season. No more team control without an extension or franchise/transition tag. Very likely this is his last season as a Jet, as someone will pay him more than we can next year.

Thanks, I couldn't remember if he was going to be a UFA or not.

The defense certainly hasn’t got much of an excuse to do poorly.  This is the third season of nine wide and saleh has been able to get most of the right types of players in the positions.  And if the offense plays up to potential then the other teams will need to be one dimensional. This should help the defense further.

True. If we had Nick Bosa, and he was taking a breather, it would make sense for the team we're playing to go no huddle to keep Bosa on the pine. But....with or D, it seems no matter who we have out there, they can dominate and get to the QB. Starters, back ups, their back ups, they can all ball out. Or so we hope!

Just musing over the fact that our SECOND UNIT DL would look something like:  JJ2, Clemons, Solomon Thomas, Huff with McDonald subbing in on 3rd downs.

I may be drinking the Kool-Aid but that feels like a legitimate starting DL to me, perhaps only missing the wide-body run-stuffer that Al Woods gives us at the starting unit.  I know there are a lot of mixed feelings about the heavy rotation approach, but damn, this is a fun unit.

JJ is similar to TJ Watt in height/weight and has some of the same skill sets.  JJ is also starting to rush more from a 2 point standup stance.  Watt has a clear advantage in bend around the edge

To early to get a sense of McDonald.  The spin move is Freeney like if I remember correctly.  You don’t see it that much these days.  I want to get a better read on his bend off the edge before comparing him to some of the elite speed rushers like Abraham.
