Rumors Jets looking to sign veteran RB

Recommended Posts

just be prepared for the guy to do nothing. these RBs are feast or famine with their runs. even Hall is like that. so if this guy gets 4 carries a game like Cook did dont be surprised if he has 3 YPC.

we need a good backup but mostly as insurance in case Hall gets hurt. its hard for alot of RBs to get going on 4 carries a game.

lots of lower tier rbs still out there it seems, vets at near vet minimum probably.

Jets and Saleh are all about character so a guy like Latavius murray might be a possibility.

Jerrick mackinnon can do a few things.

Josh kelly is still fairly young

No needle movers.

Heard a stat that Abanikanda had four snaps in pass pro last season and he graded a zero on all four. Would not be surprised if the Jets cut bait with him in camp at some point if they end up liking a more reliable player in this draft. Remember Saleh getting on Hall for not getting the grimy(?) yards last year, so Dillon Johnson works there. As far as the veteran guy, would not be surprised to see Zeke Elliot brought in. Chain mover, good in pass pro, will take a beating for Hall. Surprised they didn’t make a play for Dobbins.

Maybe they did, but Dobbins is still just 25 and is on a one-year show-me contract where - teammate injuries aside - he'll figure to get a lot more carries splitting time with Edwards again than he would get backing up Breece Hall.

I think Elliot is a good guess. He's not what he once was, but that's the point (he won't be $$$$, can still do well in limited carries but is going to slow down more over the course of a game regularly getting 15+ touches; plus no more force-feeding carries like they did with Cook, just to do so, and/or so they could justify the acquisition in the first place).

No discord, either. He comes in to back up Breece Hall, he knows he should only expect to get a token # of carries while Hall is healthy, or in garbage time to close out a no longer competitive game. There's no confusion; there's no slights for not giving him the ball; he knows what it is before signing, and really there isn't some long line of teams to offer him so much better anyway.

With what money are the Jets going to sign this player with?

You think JFM is going to carry a $13.3MM base salary this year? I don't, even if they don't outright cut/trade him.

To afford the likes of a Zeke Elliot or similar, he and a handful of others can be restructured to lessen their current year cap hits, even without cutting, trading, or even reducing the players' compensations.

Expect them to do some of this anyway, if only to fit their 1st round rookie alone.

Knock on him coming out was he was lazy. Chase Brown was on the board too, who’s in line to split starter reps in Cinci

Chase brown doesnt have Breece Hall in front of him.

What are we doing here?

He earned more reps and is a better player than Iz Ab. Was on the board when the Jets selected him.

Chargers add former Ravens star J.K. Dobbins on one-year contract

Joining Gus Edward’s as a 1-2 punch. He’s playing for his future contract

They obviously were very familiar with him. After all, blood is thicker than water.😁

Agree, him or someone like latavius Murray (who has also been mentioned). Elliott is known as a great pass blocker which no one else in the Jets current RB room can say. He also offers a little more quality on short punch-in situations than Izzy, and arguably even Breece (at least 0 dives). These players would be cheap with no expectations and compliment our current roster.

However, I disagree with the general sentiment here that the Jets won't draft a RB. I do think it wouldn't be before about round 5, but by round 5 and later anyone you take is a speculative pick for depth and upside (except arguably K/P). The Jets should be taking whoever their favorite prospect is in these rounds, regardless of position or need. If they miss out in the first 4 rounds on positions they need contributions for THIS year (OL, WR, maybe S, etc) that should be addressed with cheap vet contracts.

It's what they should do, tbh. Just no need to dump $7MM on the likes of Cook again.

They have two young backs already. The 3rd back should be experienced, more reliable to pick up a blitz, and be more of a tandem with Abanikanda should Hall need to take a break for a game here or there. There are always fast young guys who can be added whenever during the season if needed, since most of the non-special talents are only as productive as their OL anyway (e.g. Bam Knight). Also such guys are around as UDFAs - and they should & probably will add 1-2 of those as well - to lessen the summer load of those who'll make the roster, and see if they get lucky with one of them.

No need to burn a draft pick, unless privately they already think Abanikanda was a mistake & expect him to be on the roster bubble.

Frank Gore is definitely coming back.

Funny you say that....Sperm's description of the perfect complimentary RB is what Gase thought we were getting in Gore. Reliable, good blitz pick up. No one thought he'd become our #1 back.
