Jets Optimistic About Haason Reddick Resolution; Summer Extension Unlikely (profootballrumors.com)

June 19th, 2024 at 10:20pm CST by Sam Robinson

Qualifying the second-most discussed no-show at Jets minicamp, Haason Reddick is still not seeing eye-to-eye with his new team. While Aaron Rodgers‘ absence last week garnered more attention, Reddick’s situation remains the lead item for a Jets team that gave up a third-round pick for the Pro Bowl edge rusher earlier this offseason.

USATSI_19711552-232x300.jpgReddick is seeking a new contract, and while the Jets are open to taking this route, this does not appear the way the team wants to resolve this situation. It should be considered highly unlikely the Jets extend Reddick before the season, according to the New York Post’s Brian Costello, who does not see any situation in which the team caves on this front this summer.

A report last week from ESPN.com’s Rich Cimini alluded to Jets GM Joe Douglas being hesitant to do extensions for players 29 and older or immediately extending recently acquired talent. Reddick, who will turn 30 in September, checks both boxes. While teams regularly have extensions ready for high-end players acquired via trade, the Jets are clearly aiming to avoid this with Reddick.

The team may not strictly view the former Cardinals, Panthers and Eagles edge rusher as a pure rental, but its actions thus far do not paint a picture of a club eager to extend this partnership beyond 2024. This differs from the paths the Giants (Brian Burns), Bears (Montez Sweat) and Dolphins (Bradley Chubb) took upon acquiring impact edge rushers via trade. Immediate extensions were authorized. Though, each player was at least two years younger than Reddick at the time those deals were finalized.

The Jets passed on paying Bryce Huff in free agency, but the team has bigger plans for Reddick — whom it views as a three-down player. The Eagles and Jets effectively swapped Huff and Reddick, though the latter is holding its new edge defender to his Philly contract (three years, $45MM) despite the Pro Bowler’s 50.5 sacks — with 13 forced fumbles mixed in — during the 2020s ranking fourth in the NFL. It will be interesting if Reddick attempts to further test the Jets by staging a holdout or if he shows up to training camp and does not practice, the new hold-in strategy.

Despite this unusual situation, Costello adds the sides are optimistic a resolution will emerge before training camp. Robert Saleh mentioned a conversation with the team’s new sack artist recently, and Costello indicates this situation differs from the bitter Jamal Adams contract talks that eventually produced a trade. Still, this is not exactly a good look for a Jets team that traded a Day 2 pick for a two-time Pro Bowler.

USATSI_12875519-263x300.jpgNew York also unloaded dependable starter John Franklin-Myers to make room for Reddick’s contract, which sits tied for 19th among edges presently. Reddick will be expected to play the lead role in a group housing recent first-rounders Jermaine Johnson and Will McDonald. An incentive package that allows the team to avoid an extension may well be the way the sides finish this chapter. Should that happen, Reddick will be headed toward free agency in 2025.

Although the Jets would have exclusive negotiating rights with Reddick until next March’s legal tampering period, their present stance does not point to an about-face regarding an extension. Reddick entering this season without a new deal will present him as a rental piece, with a route to a fifth team more likely than not to emerge come 2025.

Concern Over Haason Reddick? NFL Reporter Given Update on New York Jets' Pro Bowl Rusher - Athlon Sports

Concern Over Haason Reddick? NFL Reporter Given Update on Jets' Pro Bowl Rusher

One NFL analyst believes New York's top pass rusher will be reporting to the team in the near future.

In this story:New York Jets

NEW YORK JETS: The New York Jets have one final goal to handle to complete their offseason and truly kick off the start of training camp.

It just so happens to be the hardest thing they need to do right now.

After trading for Haason Reddick from Philadelphia, an agreement had seemingly been reached between the Jets and the Pro Bowl pass rusher that he would play out the final year of his contract, and then hit free agency after the 2022 season.

The issue? Reddick doesn't have any guaranteed money in his current deal for the 2024 season, and that must change following the trade of John Franklin-Myers.

New York has seen the former Temple star sit out of offseason workouts in the hopes he would get the new deal he's been pushing for.

Could Reddick sit out of the start of training camp?

Speaking as a backup host on the Rich Eisen show earlier this week, NFL reporter Tom Pelissero detailed the current situation with Reddick, and the chances of him sitting out in camp.

"So where does this all land? I don’t 100% know at this point," Pelissero commented. "It’s hard to imagine Haason Reddick is not playing with the Jets in September. Is he practicing with the Jets oh around let’s say July 24? Maybe not, we’ll see."

The long-time NFL reporter stated that although a holdout could certainly happen, it's not in the true nature of Reddick to do so.

"The history of his agent is not having players hold out," Pelissero explained.
"There have certainly been some hold ins but again everyone has to make their own decisions on that & this is definitely a different type of situation that the Jets were really not anticipating."

It’s not a hold out yet. Could obviously turn into one but a veteran pro bowl type player can work out on his own. Not really a concern until about august 1 for me.

Should New York Jets' fans interpret it as a positive sign with training camp less than one week away?

Defensive end Haason Reddick was a no-show for voluntary OTAs and mandatory June minicamp, but he may have hinted at his plans for training camp during a recent public appearance.

The New Jersey native hosted a youth football camp on Saturday, July 13 in his home city of Camden. In conjunction with the Camden County Board of Commissioners, the Reddick-spearheaded event served more than 400 young people from the local area.

In photos from the camp, Reddick is proudly donning a white Jets shirt and a black bucket cap. The tee-shirt features the retro team logo that was reintroduced this offseason. Would he have worn official team apparel if he was at odds with the front office?

Reddick's wardrobe choice suggests that the double-digit sacks machine plans to report to training camp for his new team rather than hold out for a pay raise. The Philadelphia Eagles traded Reddick to New York in the offseason as it was rumored the 29-year-old wanted a new contract.

"I understand everything that's happening, but at the same time, I know when it comes time to play football, like I said before, he's going to be ready to play football," said Jets' fourth-year head coach Robert Saleh while addressing Reddick's absence at minicamp.

Reddick totaled 27.0 sacks and 49 quarterback hits over 34 regular season games with the Eagles en-route to back-to-back Pro Bowl selections. The former Temple star has logged at least 11.0 sacks four years in a row.

Veterans must report to Jets' training camp on July 23 with practice slated to begin the following day in Florham Park.

I was pleasantly surprised they traded for him in the first place... but didn't think they were desperate for another DPR. Whatever. Dude has no leverage, he'll lose some money in a brief holdout and then show up, same as everywhere this crap happens.

Not the Jets fault. Not particularly worried about it.

He’s 29.  I would give him another year easy. Two years probably. 3 years if he agrees to a team friendly contract.

going by the “so jetsy” paradigm if they make him prove it he will and then he’ll leave lol

his production and availability are consistently excellent

Do the deal while it’s relatively affordable or at least more affordable

not sure but it looks like the current deal has 3 void years but an extension frees up cap space?

Id like to see us get a deal done with him so he can be at camp. Hes a vet so it wont hurt him as bad if he does miss time holding out. But we have enough distractions. We don’t need an additional one.

Funny, I actually think we need the distraction.  Arguing over his inevitable return will keep us concentrating on something that truly does not matter, rather that Rodgers, his age and his insanity.
