Geno fires his agent because he wasnt picked #1 overall (MERGED)

Geno Smith's draft fall to the New York Jets has claimed a victim other than Tim Tebow: Smith's agency.

Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News writes that Smith believed he "would be and should be" the No. 1 overall pick in the draft. When he didn't make the first round, the agents paid the price.Liz Mullen of Sports Business Journal reports that Smith fired Select Sports, the agency representing him throughout the draft process. By league rule, he can't hire another agent for another five days.

This will open up to Smith to easy criticism: It's not like the agents are at fault for his draft day fall, and it looks like he's taking it out on them. But that's overly simplistic and sympathetic to the agents.

Sports agents often make big promises they can't keep. We don't know what transpired between Smith and his agents, but he's well within his rights to fire them if they didn't deliver.

How dare anyone fire a person/group they are paying for a service, due to them feeling the person/group is not performing that service to their satisfaction.  Blasphemy!

How long before the breaking story of Geno not leaving additional gratuity on top of the 18% automatically added for his party of 12 at <insert name of Manhattan eatery>?

Geno Smith Fires Agent Due To Draft Slide

April 30, 2013 2:47 pm

EULA59.jpg

Geno Smith just showed the fans and his critics that he deserved to fall to
the 2nd round before being selected, due to personal issues that dropped
his stock.

Word was going around the war rooms that Geno Smith had a selfish attitude and poor ways of handling disappointments.

A franchise quarterback doesn't blame others for his mistake or failures.

A franchise quarterback is accountable and holds themselves responsible
if they don't reach expectations, which in turn tends to limit team
turmoil, which the Jets have already had their fill.

The agent wasn't at fault for Geno Smith falling into the second round, they
weren't the ones playing the games each weekend, doing the interviews
and workouts in front of NFL scouts in order to be properly placed on
the draft boards.

Smith comes from an Air Raid offense which is known not to produce QBs that last long in the NFL.

That was already working against Smith, but he did well at the combines and pro day, but
it was his attitude that made his stock drop, and after firing his agent
for not being the top overall pick, it shows signs of immaturity which
is a turnoff for any teams intending on drafting him.

How Geno Smith expected to be taken first overall in the draft, after the Chiefs
had already acquired Alex Smith, further showcases menta issuesl and
personality problems. His attitude thus far mimics that of another QB
that had some of the same issues, Ryan Leaf.

This is an unfortunate blow to the Jets organization and it's fans. Here they
drafted Smith and released Tebow marking the end of the failed Sanchez
and Tebow experiment. Now they aren't even a week removed from the draft
and Geno Smith decides to publicly prove his critics were correct.

Which is exactly why he wasn't drafted in the first round. Now, thanks to him
outwardly showcasing those immature issues, the Jets and their fans may
have to endure one more year of who is the starting QB.

Earlier in the offseason, I predicted Geno Smith was going to be the biggest
bust in the draft, and after firing and placing the blame on his agent
for not being the first overall pick when the Chiefs had Alex Smith
locked as the starter, he just gave an early indication that he indeed
has bust written all over him.

Sorry Jets fans. You deserved better than this from your next "franchise QB." Best of luck next season.

UPDATE: Smith told SiriusXM NFL Radio on Tuesday that the firing had nothing to do with the draft process, but he didn't want to go into further detail.

What's absolute bullsh*t about Rosenthal and all these articles, well, besides the fact that they completely fabricated Geno's reasoning for the firing based on total conjecture,  is that instead of removing their article in its entirety, they just put the little blurb at the bottom saying that everything they wrote was entirely made up.

I just...I can't.

Any other team drafts this guy, and these writers would be performing verbal fellatio on them. Instead we're less than a week into his career and getting stories about what an assh*le he is. I hate everything.

The agents should be fired for having him in the green room without a verbal assurance from a team that they'd take him in the 1st round.

Almost every prospect that is interviewed is given a verbal assurance that they will be taken.   You hear it all the time in predraft interviews from players that the media think a team is interested in

Interesting to note that all of these articles are citing that epic douche-nozzle Mehta as their lone source.  There seems to be no other confirmation of this claim.  Even more interesting since Mehta "heard" Geno was upset about his draft position and concluded that meant Geno solely fired his agents because he didn't go #1 overall.  Quite a theory, particularly since Geno has already outright denied it.

The agents work for geno. he's allowed to hire and fire them at his discretion. It's not a sign of loyalty or intelligence to stick with bad agents.

I went to their page by the way and among their client photos is Reggie Tongue. Remember him? that's one of their 15 "clients"

Have at it:

A source "close to Geno Smith" tells Deadspin he fired his agents because they "handled him like a potential high pick," advising him to do things like skip the Senior Bowl.  Per the source, Smith was also upset his agents steered fellow clients Chase Daniel and Kevin Kolb to QB-needy teams, and "did nothing" to combat the negative press that came about following Pro Football Weekly's scathing scouting report. "(Geno) just felt like he needed a change, and that's the end of the story," the source said. Agent switches are rarely this scrutinized, but it's just a taste of what Smith will have to get used to in the New York market.

If the truly did advise him to skip the senior bowl, then that is definitely a fire-able offence. I'm with Bit on this and believe unless you're an Andrew luck or RGIII and have nothing to prove, you go to these things and showcase yourself.  It's tough to say with certainty, but I'd bet good money and say that if Geno went there and performed, we wouldn't be talking about our 2nd round QB right now.
