Ken Schroy
List Of Potential GM, Head Coach Candidates For Jets Is Reportedly Extensive Consultants Casserly And Wolf Likely To Push Gang Green In A Certain Direction December 29, 2014 2:00 PM Adam Gase, Pep Hamilton and Josh McDaniels NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — So now what? The Jets have a lot of work to do in short order to replace fired head coach Rex Ryan and general manager John Idzik, and it appears owner Woody Johnson is ready to go to the ends of the Earth to turn this franchise around after four straight non-playoff seasons. Need proof? Johnson has put together a dream team of consultants to aid him in finding the next general manager. NFL lifers Charley Casserly and Ron Wolf, two longtime executives who made their bones in this league as personnel men, are expected to steer the Jets in a certain direction. Now who they will target remains open to speculation, but according to the Daily News the Jets have an extensive wish list, including: George Paton, the current assistant GM of the Minnesota Vikings; Trent Kirchner, the Director of Pro Personnel in Seattle; Will McClay, a noted draft guru who has helped the Dallas Cowboys in recent years; Chris Ballard, the Kansas City Chiefs’ current Director of Player Personnel; and likely the most sought-after candidate, Eric DeCosta, GM Ozzie Newsome’s right-hand man in Baltimore. All of those potential candidates are noted for being “football guys” with steep backgrounds in identifying and developing on-field talent, as opposed to salary capologists like the Jets’ previous two GMs, Idzik and Mike Tannenbaum. And whoever is hired will have to sell to Casserly, Wolf and, ultimately, Johnson, his vision for the front office, regarding everything from scouting to a plan for free agency. The list of potential head coaches has been more wide open, and Johnson made it clear Monday he will likely make the final call on who is hired. Names that have been thrown around in various media reports over the last week as possible targets for the Jets include New England Patriots offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Josh McDaniels, Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator Todd Bowles, Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton and Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Gase. Johnson, it appears, is so serious about turning the Jets around from their 4-12 demise in 2014 that he reportedly reached out to former San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh, even though it has been widely reported that he will be accepting a lucrative offer from the University of Michigan this week. Whoever ends up being the GM and head coach will have a lot of assets to work with. The Jets are reportedly more than $40 million under the salary cap for 2015, and have the No. 6 overall selection in next spring’s draft. Stay tuned, folks. A lot of new faces will soon be arriving in Florham Park

sg3
How dare the Jets hire a GM the right way.. Common Woody, your dopey fans demand you just run out there and hire the first guy you can, preferably some tired old retread who hasn't been active for 5 years or more. "We can't wait until January, Woody...common....get Casserly to pick a name out of a hat NOW!!! NOW...DAMMIT...NOW!!!

dbatesman
Just a thought here - is there any chance Casserly or Wolf would take the GM job? Kay asked Schefter this question earlier today, and he didn't have an answer. I doubt it, but I suppose it's possible he gets so involved in the process that he ends up staying on full-time as a football czar or football majordomo or football whatever-clunky-Old-World-aristocracy-metaphor-you-like. Sperm Edwards
Just reading an older article about DeCosta. 3 years ago he signed a 3 year deal to be pro personnel director, and that may have paid him better than most full GMs. Or that in exchange for that Baltimore wasn't even granting interview permission. Probably a pipe dream. He's 100% Ravens; started there in 1996, has been virtually guaranteed Ozzie's job when he's done, and they're not letting him go. Almost sounds like they'd sooner let Ozzie go before they'd let DeCosta get away. Seems they figure if a team has 2 top-notch minds, and is paying each $5M-8M, it might seem like overpaying but they may save the owner more than that in bad deals every season. It's not that they haven't ever missed on higher picks - they have - but they've done a good job. Also that deal for Flacco is ludicrous but it seems at any given time there aren't more than 15 people on planet earth who'd step in and do a better job of QBing for them right away. Any Jets fan can attest to this: pretty good, or even average, with the ability to get super-hot in the playoffs isn't just a little bit better than below average; it's MUCH better. So while it might get a little bit more interesting, as DeCosta's contract is probably up in a couple of weeks, it's unlikely to happen for us or anyone else. After that, a lead scout. Then he'll pick a HC. Then he'll pick the players in our draft. After that, he'll hire the GM.
