Eagles coach Chip Kelly frequently gushes publicly about his former Oregon Marcus Mariota, and according to one report, Kelly is already plotting privately to acquire Mariota in the NFL draft.

The Eagles have the 20th overall pick in the draft, and Mariota isn’t expected to be available by that point, but NJ.com reports that the team is already committed to trying to move up in the draft to acquire Mariota.

“From No. 20, it’s certainly not going to be easy,” an unnamed source told NJ.com. “It’s probably going to take moving up twice to do it. There’s going to be some wheeling and dealing involved. Can it happen? I don’t know. But they’re going to try.”

It’s way too early to say anything for certain about the draft. It’s possible that the Buccaneers will decide to use the first overall pick on Mariota, and that any other team’s interest in him is moot. It’s also possible that Mariota’s stock will tumble, and he’ll still be available at No. 20. And it’s possible that Kelly actually isn’t as in love with Mariota as he says publicly, and that the Eagles won’t draft him even if he gets the chance.

So take this one with a grain of salt. But also file it away for the future. As the draft gets closer, if it looks like the Bucs will pass on Mariota and there’s a trade to be made for a team moving up to get him, the Eagles might be that team. And Mariota and Kelly might reunite in the NFL.

Best case scenario of rate Jets is Mariota has an unimpressive combine.  Then he drops to 6 and they can give Chip a call.

Christ, it's three ones? Is that true?

I spoke with my brother in law the other night and he's from Philly. He said he has heard some of the rumors of Kelly wanting Mariota. He told me according to value and where they are etc. That he heard it would take 3 1st rounders and 2 top players. That's what they are saying in Philly.

A head coach taking an active role in getting players he thinks will help???   The REX defenders all said he had no say.  WTF???    :character0069:

In fairness, he just got a promotion to head of personnel type job. Right after he apparently almost quit.

Preconditioning their fans to consider the deal a steal if/when they pay slightly less?

This year's first and a 2, plus next year's first. If they want to throw in Foles, drop the 2 to a 4. I kinda like this first round in that 10-20 range better anyway.

First off, I don't like the idea of trading down so another team can take a QB when we don't have one.

I also think that people are way undervaluing Foles trade value. Look at his numbers including wins and losses. Look at his size and arm strength. 6'6" 240lb rocket arm, pro bowl QB's in their mid 20's, with a career QB rating over 80 in more than 20 starts don't grow on trees.

If I was GM I'd draft Mariota if he falls to us and trade him for Foles and a 2nd or 3rd rounder. If you disagree what do you think Foles approximate trade value is ..... Straight up for a draft pick? Leave Mariota out of it.

I'd say straight up he's an early 2nd to late 1st. Foles and a 2nd rounder is fair for #6 overall.

That being said, I think we need to be prepared to keep Mariota if we draft him in case Philly changes their mind. That means we need a solid veteran to join Geno on the depth chart because Mariota won't start day one. We also need to keep in mind that most other teams don't hold Mariota with the same value as Philly. That fact lowers his value. As much as philly would like to have him, it's not like we would have 2 or 3 other teams calling us for him. Philly knows that.

Everything that the Giants did with Eli applies here. Teams do draft and trade players, not often but it happens. Also if we don't trade him away, highly drafted QBs can sit for a while like Eli, Rivers, Rodgers.... ect. We'd have to have this deal in place, and know that Tampa and Tennessee could also have deals in place and would both have heavy interest in Foles. If our price is too high we lose out.

I hope our daisy fresh rookie GM can navigate this interesting situation in the draft.

if clueless Woody would have manned up and fired fatso after week 14 when the Jets were 2 & 11, the Jets  would have the #2 pick overall and that could have turned into the jackpot if Mariota doesn't go 1st overall.

Even if Mariota goes 1st overall the Draft value equivalent between #2 overall and #6 overall is the equivalent of the #16 pick overall  OR the 34th AND 46th overall together.

If Chip Kelly is floating this rumor around it means he wants to see which teams at the top are wanting to desperately trade down and ready for a shake down.

This trade won't happen till the draft is in progress but Chip Kelly will have a good idea what kind of leverage he has against the Top 10 teams in the draft.

For the JETS they can hold steady and see if anyone worth falls down to #6 before they make a decision on what to do with the pick.

I think a team with a top 10 pick would hope this leaked rumor would force a team like the Jets/Chicago or Rams/ Redskins to trade up to get their QB

I would think TB or Tennessee would like to stay within the top 10 picks in rds 1&2 instead of pick 20.

I think you're wayyyyyyy overrating Foles. People thought Kelly was about to bench him for Sanchez before he got hurt. Also, Foles' value bottoms out simply by virtue of Kelly making the phone call to go after Mariota.

This is all I've heard being talked about on Philly sports radio since the season ended.  They went from "no way we have the ammo" to "lets trade three first rounders and Fletcher Cox".

They've even started a #dothedeal hashtag and giving away shirts begging the Eagles to get him.  I think it's a good move for them if they do.
