Brian Winters Emurgence

Jets Daily Dosage.

Winters' play this year has definitely been a pleasant surprise, and will certainly be worth looking to retain this coming offseason as long as he keeps this up and the price is right.  While I understand the concept of giving a player enough time to an extent, Winters is now in his fourth year so he has already had plenty of time, and if he didn't step it up this year, he likely would have never been anything more than a backup for the rest of his NFL career.  Taking 4 years to get it together is hardly the expectation for a third round pick.  In Winters case, it only came across worse to fans considering that he was brought in to replace Slauson, and ended up being a major downgrade to a former 6th round pick who took less time than this to develop.

In the end, it's still a nice thing to see, so no reason to be unhappy now, but he hardly deserves a pass for his poor play in the past either.

Not having Breno next to him probably helps, but the O-Line has been right about average, which is better than I expected out of this group.

Breno's injury has been a blessing in disguise.  Apart from his overall suckiness not being in the lineup, Ijalana and Qvale are both getting valuable live reps and seem to be developing nicely.  Next step: Dump Breno.

The architect of our soon to be superbowl winning team.

Geno comes off the bench, Winters makes the great block and Geno tosses a graceful 50 yarder to Enunwa for the winning score.

And Idzik becomes the first person to get inducted into the Hall of Fame while still holding a title.

Qb and OC scheme are helping our oline a lot but they have played pretty well.

This. It is amazing what coaching can do and Fitz is good (normally) about not holding the ball too long; stepping up (or sliding to the side) which helps as well in the passing game. I don't think they are nearly as dominant in run blocking as in the past. It will be interesting to see if they resign him or move on at the end of the year.

It is hard to say, but the new guys seem to be less of a turnstile so that probably helps; however, I am sure it is more challenging having 2 different guys substituting in; everyone talks about how important it is to be consistent at the line, and Winters now has to deal with two different RT all game long.

I think Jet fans tend to exaggerate how bad Winters was. He was never THAT bad. He was always solid in the run game, had issues in pass blocking which he worked on throughout his career and obviously improved. If he was as bad as Jet fans made him out to be, he would not be in the NFL anymore.

He had his fair share of nuts.

Let's see:

2013
Milliner - Colossal bust. Not quite Vernon Gholston, but pretty close.
Sheldon - good player, dumb as a box of rocks. One more run-in with the law and he'll be suspended for a year. Still was a good pick.
Geno Smith - Utter dogsh*t
Winters - Finally playing well.
Oday Aboushi - Bust
Will Campbell - Bust
Tommy Bohanon - Meh

Summary: One very good player, one solid player. Other than that a pretty bad draft.

2014
Pryor - Good player. But considering we passed on Teddy Bridgewater, this is a fail. Good QB >>> Good Safety
Amaro - Major Bust. Could have used this pick to move up for Derek Carr.
McDougal - Bust
Saunders - Major bust
Evans - Bust
Dozier - Still on the team, but he sucks. Bust
George - Bust
Dixon - Bust
Enunwa - Developing into a good player
IK - Bust as a player, but saved our season last year.
Boyd -Any time you allow Rex to influence your pick you fail. Bust
Reilly - Meh

Summary: Two good players, but one was chosen over a potential franchise QB, so that's a major failure. Another good QB was skipped over in favor of a tight end who couldn't catch or block. 13 picks, two good players. Two good QBs skipped over. This draft will haunt us for years.

So......you were saying about all of his fair share of nuts?????????

So are we saying that some jumped the gun and killed a young player too soon?

Shocking, isn't it?  Imagine franchises like Pittsburgh, San Francisco, etc reacted the same way certain fan-bases do when a player does not turn into a pro-bowler the minute they step on the field?

Well, given he was hired to be the G.M. of an NFL franchise, you would HOPE he couldn't be completely useless.  But Sheldon has caused many a problem, and Pryor is NOT the best safety taken in that draft.

But we'll give you those 4.  I'll even give you Trevor Reilly for 5.  But now we get to play this game:

Dee Millner, Geno Smith, Oday Aboushi, William Campbell, Tommy Bohanon, Jace Amaro, Dexter McDougle, Jalen Saunders, Shaq Evans, Dakota Dozier (maybe), Jeremiah George, Brandon Dixon, IK Enemkpala, Tajh Boyd

19 picks.  3 current starters,   Hmmmmm.......

First off, Im not defending him by any stretch of the imagination. I was simply pointing out that he picked a few good players like you pointed out. Sheldon is an All-Pro. Don't care if he's dumb. And he's not getting suspended for a year. Not anymore. Either way, he's still here and is a still better than just "good player". Two starters from the draft, one All-Pro. Not bad.

Pryor was a good pick. We needed safety. Yeah we passed over Bridgewater but we had just drafted Geno and he was the rookie of the month only a few months prior to the draft. And Bridgewater hasn't done anything to claim him the next Joe Montana. His Pro-Bowl ticket was a massive joke.

Besides, its easy to nitpick when hindsight is 20/20. Are you saying our 2015 draft will also haunt us for years since we picked up Petty instead of Siemian? And 2016 since we passed on Lynch and Prescott?

Discounting him passing on Bridgewater (and it's pretty unforgivable if you ask me), receiver was a much bigger need than safety. And there were good ones available at that pick.

But even ignoring that, and accepting the Pryor pick as a successful choice, that's two good players out of 13 picks in one of the most talent-rich drafts in recent memory. Any way you look at it, this was a terrible job by Idzik.
