"Jamal Adams was the best safety of the 2017 NFL Draft and if you don't believe it he'll happily tell you. In three seasons with the Jets, Adams made two Pro Bowls and was a two-time All-Pro selection.

But after forcing his way out of New York with a trade in 2020, Adams struggled to hold onto the mantle of the league's top safety. His reputation for being a hard hitter in the secondary and elite at getting after the quarterback from the box has suffered in large part because a series of injuries have limited him to just 34 games over the past four years.

2023 was a better year for Adams after missing nearly all of 2022, but he still has a long way to go before he's in the discussion of being the best at anything."

This oversells Adams a bunch. Taking him over Mahomes (or Watson, even making the mess he's now making with the Browns) was arguably the single dumbest thing this franchise has ever done. Zach Wilson, he of the jogging shorts running free on a Utah high school field tossing balls to nobodies,  1A on the list.

Jets, pretty much bereft of anything you would call an NFL offense at the time (Ryan Fitz-fvckin-Patrick?) took not one but 2 safeties at the top of this draft. May be they could've picked a punter or a guard if they wanted to have a more impactful player than  god damn safety you can sign off the street every March. This franchise has been run by idiots for the entire Johnson Error. Taking a safety-nonpremium positions that's easily filled in free agency or late rounds, and cheaply- with a 1st round pick should be grounds for immediate firing. No great secret if you take a guy in the 1st round, he'll be looking for a big $ long term contract within 2 seasons. Doing so with a safety is idiocy, a complete lack of understanding positional value and cap management. Which is exactly what happened; Adams demanded a payday and the jets balked.

I still think Jets took two safeties because Bowles was (1) a former safety himself; and (2) wanted no part of Honey Badger -- who could've been had for nothing and had some nice years afterward -- because he knocked up Bowles' daughter

Trying to think of a player who lacked self awareness worse than Jamal and no one comes to mind

Boy did Macc completely whiff on this pick, drafting a box safety for “leadership” over Patrick freaking Mahomes.

Well, in his defense, he did have Christian Hackenberg waiting in the wings.

The jets have to be the one team he wouldn’t pick up the phone for and Adams has to be the one player JD wouldn’t call

can’t imagine there wasn’t bad blood the way things went down

I don’t think he could pass a physical until November anyway

I realize that it's cool to bash the Jets around here but didn't we trade him for 2 firsts and a third? So didn't it work out pretty well for us in the long run?

Sure we should have taken Mahomes in retrospect, and taking a safety in the 1st is poor management, but in no way was this the dumbest thing the franchise has done.

AH, the romance and Mystery  of draft picks over....Patrick Mahomes.

But we had Christian Hackenberg. EVERYONE at Penn State HATED. Our Coffee Boy GM had no idea, even though everybody else knew the guy was a turd.

Re tell the story; my son was a pretty good prep lineman, got a D2 scholarship out of it. So we went to a bunch of camps during the recruiting process, as did his friends, 2 of whom managed to get D1 scholarships(not to PSU). Anyway, these camps involve a football program putting on it's best face; this place is great, everyone is great, you'd be lucky if we offer you a scholarship. But reality is when you talk to coaches, players, support staff, things do break down into cliques; defense/offense, position groups, even black/white. And even then, again, on camps days everyone is selling their school. Several kids he knew went to the Penn State camp the year Hackenberg was about to be a senior. And uncharacteristic of any other college camp, EVERYBODY at the PSU camp hated Hackenerg. Like, not the defense , or the black guys, or the DL coaches no everybody hated this guy. EVERYBODY.

No.

Washed and doesn't play a real position... plays a made up position where he head hunts and doesn't cover anyone... because he can't cover anyone.

He was a good against the run and we pretty much need that right now. Not sure his personality would be a good thing for this team.
