Albert Breer on the Jets

From his 9/29 article:

Jets on the upswing. Who thought we’d be talking about the Jets in more glowing terms than the Giants before the end of September? Sure, there may be a little recency bias going here, since the Jets just whacked the Dolphins. But if you look closely, you’ll see their offseason moves are actually sort of working out.

Start with initial bloodletting, and look at those jettisoned. Brandon Marshall has 10 catches for 93 yards in three games with the Giants. Eric Decker has 10 catches for 91 yards with the Titans. David Harris has played seven total snaps for the Patriots. Ryan Fitzpatrick is backing up Jameis Winston in Tampa. Ryan Clady retired. And Nick Mangold and Darrelle Revis are without jobs. So two of those six guys are actually on the field for their new teams, and both are on the wrong side of 30 and not producing close to the level they once did. And yes, Sheldon Richardson’s been good in Seattle, but the Jets got a second-round pick and a receiver, in Jermaine Kearse, who’s been more productive than Marshall or Decker have been back for him.

Meanwhile, second-round pick Marcus Maye played every snap at safety against Miami, and next to him was sixth overall pick Jamal Adams, who had a sack, two tackles for losses, a pass defensed, and was all over the field in serving as the emotional hub for the defense. Second-year right tackle Brandon Shell has held up well against Khalil Mack and Cam Wake the past two weeks, and Shell’s classmate Leonard Williams has lived up to an already lofty rep. And young wideouts Robbie Anderson and ArDarius Stewart are taking some of those snaps vacated by Decker and Marshall, and made big plays against Miami.

Now the Jets are still a ways off from truly competing, and their record still is going to be really bad. But with an expected $80 million to spend in free agency next year, a likely high pick to get a quarterback, plus extra 2018 draft picks and a decent start on young talent, it’s not that hard to envision a way out of the hole they (intentionally) dug for themselves this season.

How To Make A Good JN Post

1. Make a list of a dozen Jets players; double-check to make sure all of them were acquired by Mike Maccagnan

2. Make a second list of a dozen mildly positive and non-falsifiable compliments, like "emotional hub," "held up well," and "lived up to an already lofty rep"

3. Randomly match a compliment to each player

What? A positive article on the NY JETS? How dare he? What a tool.

Seriously though it is refreshing to actually see some positives in what will most likely be a lost season. Enjoy it. You probably won't see many more of them.

The Jets going into the season were looked at as the worst team in the NFL. So any uptick, especially this early, and you get articles like this. Don't think anything has changed. The roster does not have talent, it has young talent that you hope develops, gains experience, and learns from mistakes. And maybe they pick up some wins along the way. Don't you feel declaring anything either way in week 3 is premature. At least give it a half a season.

Everything he said is accurate.  And it mirrors what a ton of posters have been saying for weeks/months.

But Breer makes the assumption that we'll be picking high enough to get our FQB.  If we don't, it won't matter how good our defense is or how much Anderson and Stewart develops.

Finding the QB is the vital part of this conversation.  With him we can be a perennial playoff team.  Without him, we might be able to compete when the JAG we sign has a career year and won't compete when they don't.

Thats why their is so much anxiety over every potential win the Jets get this year.

Devin Smith, Lee and Hackenburg are all awful awful early picks.

Any success will come down to the draft #1 and if he actually signs good fa's this time around.  Most guys don't get totally do overs after screw ups so lets see if he can start doing it right.

In the end this will be another case of a terrible coach sinking a gm unless we can get rid of Bowles, which doesn't look like it is happening any time soon,

As long as we lose enough games to get Darnold, I think this article is spot on.

It's almost as if people who don't hate this team can evaluate them fairly and realistically.

I like how you keep doubling down. Your posts before the Miami game were pretty funny, unfortunately each & everyone of your posts turned out wrong.

The same fans that who literally cheer for failure would be flogging themselves during the Middle Ages. It's in their genes.

uh, besides wilk and winters is there any starter not acquired by mac?  it's not like there are a whole lotta idzik and tanny players on the team.  sure it's a little bit of a puff piece and there is still way too much football to even think there's a trend developing but at the same time they beat a team that was penciled into the playoffs and beat them handily.  as many have said, it was the first game the jets have played well in all aspects in a very long time.

Mac will be fine, he does a great job with the back end of the roster, etc. part of the reason I was scared we’d end up winning too many games this year.

His drafting has been just ok, but will get better with his scouts in place.

His draft day maneuvering has been horrendous, but that hopefully will get better with experience

not saying this fits you but if the shoe fits, put it on.  why are SOJF's quick to jump on any positive story about the jets and are quick to praise and accept as gospel

any negative story.  it must be tough living in a world where the sun never shines.  :D

*team loses 15 out of its last 20 games and has no good players at any of the positions that matter*

We're two week away from the start of "If McCown keeps playing this well maybe we should..." posts.

Remind me again, what round was Dax Prescott drafted ? Drew Brees, Tom Brady, Derek Carr, Russell Wilson. Some around here want the Jets to pony up the cap space and go after Kirk Cousins, but I don't remember him being a 1st day pick .

other than waterboy, what positions don't matter because if it didn't matter, why have them? granted some are more important than others but they all matter.

Great point.  And to that I'll give you:

2003 - Brooks Bollinger 6th round

2006 - Kellen Clemens 2nd round

2008 - Erik Ainge 5th round

2011 - Greg McElroy 7th round

2013 - Geno Smith 2nd round

2014 - Tajh Boyd 7th round

2015 - Bryce Petty 4th round

2016 - Hackenberg 2 round

So we've missed on our last 8 non first round QBs.  It's probably much longer a list but I went back far enough to prove my point.  A very small number of teams can hit on a QB in the later rounds.  Some might have the best OL in the NFL with a superstar at RB and WR, another team may draft a guy who is 5'10" where most teams dismissed him because of a couple of inches.  We are not one of those few teams obviously.

Now as far as our 1st round QBs, we've hit on 2 of our last 3.  (Hit on O'Brien & Pennington, missed on Sanchez).

So the best chance to solidify our chances of a massive turnaround would be to use out #1 pick on a QB.

There is nothing a sojf hates worse than a positive article or post about the jets.

Here's to hoping we get many more years of Macc for no other reason than to drive you guys nuts.
