What Are They Waiting For?

Why haven't the Jets picked up another QB yet? There is one healthy QB on the team right now and he's a rookie. Fitz has a torn ligament in his thumb and Geno's left shoulder is beat up, leaving the team vulnerable to say the least. haven't we SEEN this movie before Jets fans? It has never turned out good either. Let's see if Bowles really IS Herm 2.0 or he insists that his GM make a trade TONIGHT!!! Get the kid from the 49ers here,  get someone real not Josh Johnson either.

They need at least one warm body though Mick, maybe two

NEW YORK (AP) - The New York Jets will have someone lined up at quarterback by the time they play the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.

Todd Bowles just isn't sure who right now.

Ryan Fitzpatrick has at least one torn ligament in his left thumb and Geno Smith is dealing with a badly bruised left shoulder, leaving the Jets' quarterback situation in disarray. That means rookie Bryce Petty or perhaps someone not even on the team's roster as of Monday night could start the Jets' next game.

"The guys are pretty sore," Bowles said of Fitzpatrick and Smith. "I'll have a better feel come Wednesday."

That's when the Jets (4-3) next hit the practice field. With the NFL's trade deadline on Tuesday rapidly approaching, there's a possibility New York could add some help at quarterback via a deal or free agent signing.

"Yeah," Bowles said during a conference call, "we're looking at everything right now."

Both quarterbacks, hurt in Sunday's loss at Oakland, have a chance to play Sunday at home against Jacksonville, depending on how they heal during the week.

"I really think they're both in the same boat right now," Bowles said.

In the meantime, Bowles acknowledged that Petty will get snaps with the starters at practice, and he confirmed that re-signing Matt Flynn is a possibility after he spent time with the Jets in training camp.

An MRI exam Monday on Fitzpatrick's thumb revealed a torn ligament that will need surgery. Bowles said Fitzpatrick could potentially put it off until the offseason depending on his pain tolerance.

While it's not his throwing hand, Fitzpatrick could still face some challenges with handling the football if he plays.

"You can't just live in the shotgun," Bowles said. "You have to be able to take snaps under center, as well as be able to hand the ball off both ways."

Fitzpatrick was hurt on the first drive of the Jets' 34-20 loss when he scrambled for 12 yards and was tackled by Charles Woodson. He had his thumb taped and remained on the sideline as Smith took over - until he, too, was injured.

Smith suffered what Bowles called "a big bruise" likely after taking a hard shot to the shoulder from David Amerson at the end of a 29-yard run down the sideline early in the fourth quarter. He remained in the game before coming out briefly - with Fitzpatrick coming back in - later in the quarter when he was hit in the abdomen by Ray-Ray Anderson.

"I thought in both cases, they both should've slid," Bowles said. "We've got to be smarter than that for the good of the team, but you can't fault the competitiveness. We've just got to be a lot smarter."

Bowles said the Jets probably could bring in another quarterback as late as Wednesday morning to get that player up to speed on the offense before practice.

Fitzpatrick took over as the starting quarterback in early August when Smith had his jaw broken by a punch from then-teammate Ikemefuna Enemkpali in the locker room. Acquired in a trade with Houston in the offseason, Fitzpatrick developed a rapport with wide receivers Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker while providing a calming veteran presence for the offense.

Fitzpatrick has thrown for 1,518 yards with 11 touchdowns and seven interceptions this season. In his first action of the season in relief of Fitzpatrick on Sunday, Smith was 27 of 42 for 265 yards with two touchdowns and a pick. He also led the Jets with 34 yards rushing on two carries.

"I don't think it was that damaging (to the offense)," Bowles said of Fitzpatrick being sidelined, "because Geno has played in games and he's a starting-caliber quarterback, and I thought he did some good things."

Bowles is drawing off his experience in Arizona last season, when he was the defensive coordinator and the Cardinals lost starting quarterback Carson Palmer and backup Drew Stanton before having to turn to third-stringer Ryan Lindley.

"I've kind of been through it," Bowles said. "We just have to rally as a team and not put so much weight on that position. We've got to play better everywhere else."

NOTES: WR Brandon Marshall has toe and ankle injuries that he played through Sunday. Bowles said both are "real sore" and he isn't sure if Marshall will play against the Jaguars. "It's too early to tell right now," he said. "We'll have to see how the week progresses for him." ... C Nick Mangold missed just the fourth game of his 10-year career with a neck injury, and Bowles is uncertain whether he'll play Sunday. Bowles thought Wesley Johnson did a "decent" job filling in.

Jets have probably already re-signed Flynn and have not yet announced it. They probably inquired trades for Glennon, Daniels, etc. and the prices were too high. It is not worth giving those teams 1st-3rd round draft choices that will more than likely make us no better. That just impacts us for next year for no good reason other then to have one of those guys you trade for guide us to 7-8 wins or less. We actually have a better chance with Geno/Petty since they know the playbook pretty well. Also, even with that tandem we might just need them to hold the fort a few games and maybe Fitz can come back and be hopefully pretty effective. A lot is up in the air right now. We should know more soon like can Fitz snap the ball and grip it, and can Geno comfortably practice/play with his deep shoulder bruise, and finally can Petty take snaps in practice and appear to be able to run the huddle at this stage of his development.

The defense is the achilles of this team.....NOT the QB........its irrelevant who's behind center.ALL of Jets $ is invested in the D.............the NO pressure/ chit coverage D

hey welcome to the site, but it's not about what is or isn't the achilles heel of the 2015 Jets they need to have at least 2 QBs who can play Sunday. Does anybody else remember 2005 when Chad and Feidler were lost for the season on back to back passing plays? Who was the team they were playing that day? Oh yea Jacksonville

this is correct.  All 3 losses have been because of the D.  Philly blew the doors off and we were never in that game, NE dropped 30 and the Raiders scored at will.

the defense is the problem w this team.

that being said, obviously, fitz and or geno will be ok to go sunday.  Thats y no ones been signed.

weird that the QB updates have been so vague. I thought it might be due to the jets trying to make a deal, but the trade deadline has come and past, and still no real update on what's going on with either QB. 'May have torn ligaments' 'bruised shoulder' 'sore ribs' .. maybe they're pulling a Rex and trying to catch that juggernaut Jax team off guard!

They're creating a new QB. Be patient.

Necromancy takes time.

they are waiting to see if geno can play.  if they sign a QB they have to cut a guy.  it would suck to cut a guy then not use the QB

Yup.  I'd guess they're at least 60/40 on either Geno or Fitz being able to play.  Otherwise giving a "Flynn" an extra day to prep would've been the smart route.  Guess we'll find out tomorrow who can practice.

I'd figure Geno has the better chance to play.  While Sunday sucked, even if Geno had been put in at the bye, I still expected some growing pains.  At least Sunday gave Geno reps and also had the defense absolutely suck.  Bound to happen at some point.  Hopefully come this Sunday, the D is ready to roll, Marshall and Mangold can play and Geno has worked off the cobwebs.  He didn't look that bad considering the situation.

agree with this.  I think fitz is going to have surgery and probably basically done.  he is a huge fumble/botched snap risk with the left thumb deal.  give geno a week of practice and lets see what gailey can cook up for him.  its a shame smith is hurt, you can see gailey giving geno a ton of short 1/2 field reads, then a PA bomb to smith to loosen up the box

I have to imagine gaileys plan for fitz is very different than geno

Yes one involves X's and O's the other involves finger paints and pipe cleaners.

Most definitely different game plans for Fitz and Geno.  Though injuries may affect the game plan even more than the QB.  Hope it doesn't happen, but if Mangold and now Marshall are out with Ivory and Decker banged up... ha, it'd be like a cruel joke on Geno.

Like yeah, this season's offense is better than last year's, but we just want to make ya feel comfortable and give you what ya had to work with last season.

I don't think geno can't understand an offense, I think he has been unprepared in the past.  I would hope losing his job taught him the value of preparation

I'm sure they pushed it right to the deadline holding their position on what they saw players that are already rostered being worth. While also being careful not to let sh*t leak, so it doesn't turn into a media debacle. Now, since nobody they trade for or sign is going to be ready in time to start Sunday, they can prep as though Geno or Petty will start, and bring in a veteran and give him 2 weeks to learn what he can.

I would guess teams tried to put the screws to us, given that we had no negotiation leverage under the circumstances.

Ugh you had to bring that up. If I'm not mistaken the trade deadline was at 4pm.

No QB acquired on Tuesday night is going to start on the following Sunday.

Some of you fellas need to get a grip.

Kaep just lost his ******* job to Blaine Gabbert. Go look at some footage of Kaep playing this year and last, then explain why we should give up draft picks to tether this team's rebuild to a QB that makes the same stupid mistakes Geno does, but comes with a huge contract.

Better to roll with what we've got. Even if it means starting Petty and hoping that Ivory, Stacy and Ridley can run the ball 55 times.

This defense should NEVER look like they have the past 5 quarters again. We can hide the QB for a week or two.

Manning slips, hits his head, and thinks it's 2004 again... sorry folks. They have a great defense. They played complete football a total of ONE time. Patriots have been doing it all year. I'll be back here November 29th and explain to you dbatesman why you are totally wrong...
