kelly
The New York Jets' decades-long quest for a franchise quarterback is like an old country-music song, a sad story of ill-fated flirtations and unrequited love. Their heart has been broken many times. They passed on Dan Marino in 1983, reacted with disbelief when a draft-day trade for Brett Favre came apart in '91 and were spurned by Peyton Manningwhen he decided to stay in school in '97.The latest what-if quarterback comes to town this weekend. No one is sayingMarcus Mariota belongs in the company of the aforementioned greats, but he gives the Tennessee Titans something the Jets haven't had since Joe Namath -- a foundation player at the most important position. The Jets could've been in position to draft Mariota, but they made the mistake of beating the Titans last Dec. 14 in what was billed as the Mariota Bowl. The Jets were 2-11; the Titans were 2-11; and it came down to a "Stanford Band" play -- a completed pass, followed by three laterals by the Titans. Dawan Landry saved the game by tackling Delanie Walker at the Jets' 9-yard line, securing a 16-11 win -- the first game in NFL history decided by that score. It was a unique result, all right, but it was so "same old Jets," who tortured their fans with a win that felt like a loss. It eliminated them from a top-three pick, according to ESPN Stats & Information. They dropped again by beating theMiami Dolphins in the final game, which sent them from fourth to sixth in the draft order. Call it Rex Ryan's revenge. Ryan knew he'd be fired at the end of the season, and the last thing he wanted to do on the way out was give the Jets a shot at a premier quarterback. He alienated the segment of the fan base that supported the "Suck for the Duck" platform."Tough you-know-what," Ryan said after the victory over the Titans, commenting on the notion that the win cost them Mariota. "A real Jets fan wants to win. It doesn't matter what pick you get or whatever. If it were Peyton Manning out there, I could understand it, but I don't think Peyton Manning is out there."Mariota, a former Oregon star, might not be Manning -- yet -- but he looks pretty special. Surrounded by minimal skill-position talent, Mariota has 19 touchdown passes and only eight interceptions in 10 starts. In last week's win against the Jacksonville Jaguars, he passed for 268 yards and three touchdowns and scored on an 87-yard run."He's smart and we know he can run, obviously," Jets coach Todd Bowles said. "He can throw in the pocket. People said he couldn't, but he can throw in the pocket. He can do a lot of things. He's dangerous." The Jets would've had the No. 2 pick if they had continued to lose, finishing 2-14, but Landry made the big tackle and Geno Smith decided to pitch a perfect game in the season finale, a passing performance still hard to comprehend. By the time Bowles and general manager Mike Maccagnan settled into their new offices at One Jets Drive in January, they knew they had no realistic shot at Mariota. They performed their due diligence, sending a contingent of important people to Oregon for a private workout. The Jets were impressed, but it was tantamount to window shopping at Tiffany's. They liked what they saw, but they knew they couldn't have it."He was a first-round quarterback all the way," said Bowles, recalling his impressions from the workout. The Jets' consolation prize, if you could call it that, was defensive end Leonard Williams. They're happy with Williams, believing he has star potential. Ryan Fitzpatrick is holding the fort quite nicely at quarterback, putting the team in position for a playoff push, but his future is uncertain because he will be a free agent. The Titans have no uncertainty. They have Mariota. The Jets ? They will continue to look, hoping to find that forever love. > http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york-jets/post/_/id/56862/jets-painful-history-of-qb-misses-marino-favre-manning-and-mariota

CrazyCarl40
I like how Cimini says the Jets missed out on Mariota, even though they had no chance to actually draft him and he wrote an article before said draft saying they shouldn't trade up to get him. Jets fans deserve better "journalists".

Right, and that's a stupid thing to say....Couldn't you say that every year about every player. Well, had you gone 2 and 14, instead of 9 and 7 you could have had ----- They didn't lose to Tenn. - it's a dumb, pointless article written by a professional hack. Klecko73isGod
Really Cimini? The Jets are exceeding expectations but you couldn't resist the urge to sh*t on them once again? You're a ****in' dick.
shuler82
Exactly. How do you miss out on someone when you don't have an opportunity to select him in the first place. Pure garbage article To be fair, in 1991 Ron Wolf worked on our front office and had a hard on for Favre.. but the Jets didn't have a first round pick after picking Rob Moore in the 1990 sup draft. The Falcons (traded up, I believe) to grab Favre one pick before ours in the 2nd round. The Jets pick Browning Nagle. Wolf leaves for Green Bay in 1992 and sends a 1st round pick to ATL for Favre. In 1997, Parcells and the Jets had the #1 pick. A lot of reports claimed that if he just committed to drafting Manning #1 overall, that he'd come out. Parcells didn't, and Manning returning to school. Not sure how this really played out behind the scenes, but publicly this was the reported story. Yes, I've said several times the Tuna made the biggest blunder in Franchise history because he could have drafted him with the 1st pick. I don't consider the Favre deal as the Jets missing out. Atlanta traded up in front of the Jets to take him and the Jets never had a chance to take him in that round. Now you could say the Jets missed out because they didn't have a 1st round pick that draft, but you could also say every team other than GB missed out on him as well by not taking him in the 1st round. Sperm Edwards
Clearly we would have been better off losing against Miami, but also lost in all this is that, at the time of that game, Mariota wasn't expected to go 2nd in the country. Even in March, there were rumors of a handshake deal in place for us to trade our #6 pick to Philadelphia if Mariota was still there. One can say all one wants about knowing he'd go in the top 2, but he was no more a sure thing to go in the top 2 than a pair of QBs the season before (Bridgewater, Manziel). Marino and Manning were different in that they were there for the taking if we wanted them (despite the baloney after-the-fact nonsense from Peyton and Archie, who didn't take the truth serum Peyton's mommy drank). Missing out on Favre was nearly as dumb as Marino/Manning, since trading up 1-2 slots in round 2 was nothing and we decided to leave it to chance so we wouldn't have to part with the 6th or 7th round pick it would take to move up. Especially back in 1991 when there was no such thing as free agency, so the only way to get a top-caliber QB was to draft one. Technically Favre could have still been had a year later if we were willing to part with our first round pick (#15, Johnny Mitchell), but at the time they still liked Nagle enough to give him the reins for the '92 season. Oh, man I love this team.

The Jets team, bereft of any discernible depth, should be dealing their 2nd and 3rd round picks for a QB who was and still is not a sure thing. Could you please leave Jets conversations to those who actually follow the team? Thanks.
