Analysis:

Flowers was a solid three-way fullback for Oklahoma who was effective as a blocker, ball carrier and pass catcher. He’s best suited as a fullback in a west coast offense.

Iowa RB James Butler and WR Matt Vandeberg will be trying out for the Jets this week.

I wouldn't be surprised if Vandeberg catches on somewhere.  Crisp routes and catches everything.  He was really good for Iowa, then broke his foot 2 years ago and his production never got back to the previous level.

Butler was really really good at Nevada.  Came to Iowa as a grad Transfer this year.  Dislocated his elbow in the 3rd game of the year, missed most of the season.  Physical running.  Was probably actually higher on NFL radars last year at this time.

Haven't seen Luis Perez sign anywhere yet. His story is great and so is his potential. I hope he gets a shot somewhere.

We have like 18 WRs on the roster + 7 RBs... gonna be interesting story to follow this year.

From NJO: http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2018/04/nfl_draft_2018_jets_undrafted_free_agent_tracker_s.html#incart_river_index

Also saw on twitter "Congrats to Bently Spain (OT 6 foot 6 310lbs) and the New York Jets the Tar Heels are proud of you" by coach Larry Fedora. So, it seems we signed him as well.

From NJO link above more details:

FLOWERS SCOUTING REPORT

From NFL.com: Flowers may be viewed by some teams as a luxury, but he's the type of luxury item that will pay for itself over time. Flowers could be an early starter thanks to his ability to plug into so many roles for teams operating out of a variety of personnel groupings.

OL AUSTIN GOLSON, AUBURN

Height: 6-5

Weight: 312 pounds

GOLSON SCOUTING REPORT

From NFL.com: Golson is one of the coaches' favorites in Auburn thanks to his intelligence, leadership and versatility. He could be graded as either a guard or center and his position flexibility gives him a shot to find a practice squad his rookie season. He lacks athletic ability and power so it is hard to envision him becoming anything more than a back-end of the roster type at best.

OL DARIUS JAMES, AUBURN

Height: 6-4

Weight: 324 pounds

JAMES SCOUTING REPORT

From DraftAnalyst.com: Underrated guard prospect ignored in scouting circles. Has a thick, powerful build, squares into defenders and seals them from the action. Sets with a wide base, works to bend his knees and anchors at the point. Gets movement as a run blocker and drives defenders off the line. Stiff, immobile and struggles to adjust and block in motion. Slow out to the second level. Plays with average balance. James is a powerful wide-bodied blocker with enough ability to back up at guard in a power-running offense.

ILB TRE' WILLIAMS, AUBURN

Height: 6-2

Weight: 225 pounds

WILLIAMS SCOUTING REPORT

From NFL.com: Williams lacks some size, is an average athlete and may not have enough play speed to range around the field and make tackles. Despite his shortcomings, he's a physical player with the ability to take on blocks or slip them and he has enough special teams talent that he could eventually find a spot in the league as a backup inside backer.

OL DAKODA SHEPLEY, UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA

Height: 6-5

Weight: 290 pounds

MORE TO KNOW ABOUT SHEPLEY

From 3DownNation.com: Shepley, who played his university football at the University of British Columbia, worked out at Eastern Michigan University’s pro day it’s within 50 miles of where he graduated from Holy Names High School in Windsor, ON. More than 20 NFL teams saw him there and that helped raise his stock. The UBC product was a 2017 Canada West all-star at right tackle and won a Vanier Cup with the Thunderbirds in 2015.

K CANON ROOKER, MIDDLE TENNESSEE STATE

Height: 5-11

Weight: 190 pounds

MORE TO KNOW ABOUT ROOKER

From Middle Tennessee State (2017 bio): Named Honorable Mention All-C-USA. Played in all 13 games. Finished the year 14-for-17 on field goals and was an impressive 7-for-7 from 45 yards or longer. Became the first kicker in school history to hit two or more field goals of 50 yards or longer in the same season. Had a career-best 37 touchbacks on 67 kickoffs for a personal-best 63.3-yard average.

DE NIFAE LEALAO, VANDERBILT

Height: 6-5

Weight: 312 pounds

MORE TO KNOW ABOUT LEALAO

From Vanderbilt (2017 bio): Lealao earned starts in 11 of 12 games in his final year as the Commodores' top interior defensive tackle... While facing constant double-team blocks, finished with 23 total tackles, a single-season high... Also posted eight solo stops, four tackles for loss, six quarterback hurries and three deflected passes... Registered a season-high five tackles against Kentucky... Had three stops and returned a fumble for 15 yards against Georgia... Also contributed multiple tackles against Alabama A&M, Alabama, Florida, Ole Miss, South Carolina and Missouri.

How did the guy we signed below go undrafted?. Unless he either played at the lowest level of competition or had a serious injury.

The #Jets have signed LB Frankie Luvu as a UDFA.

Luvu had 48 Tackles, 6.5 TFL, 12 Sacks, 1 PD, 2 INT, 2 FR, and 1 TD last year as a senior at Washington State. Could be a steal for the Jets.

Actually, Luvu had 6.5 sacks and 12 TFL last year shown in Bio below, but still seems like a heck of an Edge rusher prospect.

He is 6ft 3 and 235lbs, so I would say he isn't smallish. Hope he makes the team as a 3rd down specialist since we have no edge rush to say the least.

Detroit Lions schedule visit with WSU LB Frankie Luvu

33

Per Tony Pauline, the Lions have scheduled an official visit with the talented Pac-12 linebacker.

The old adage about the Combine is that everybody meets with everybody. Outside of the Combine, NFL teams are allowed 30 official visits with players, and it looks like the Lions are going to use one of those on Washington State linebacker Frankie Luvu, per DraftAnalyst.com. While the flashier names pull in the headlines, Luvu fits the mold of the type of player that general manager Bob Quinn and new head coach Matt Patricia have talked about. Versatile and athletic, Luvu is a hard hitter who played all over the defense for the Cougars.

Frankie Luvu, LB, Washington State

Stats

2014: 3 Tackles, 2 FF
2015: 13 Tackles
2016: 46 Tackles, 7 TFL, 1.5 Sacks, 1 FR, 1 FF
2017: 48 Tackles, 12.0 TFL, 6.5 Sacks, 2 Int, 1 PD, 2 FR, 1 TD

A three-star safety coming out of Tafuna High School in American Samoa, Frankie was a multi-sport athlete and award-winning high school football player. A special teams standout, Luvu even kicked off in high school and was apparently very good at it. He would go on to play special teams in each of his first two seasons with Washington State. His first year saw him record only three tackles, but he made two forced fumbles with both against ranked teams (Arizona and Arizona State).

His junior year would finally see him starting at linebacker. He was fairly productive in his role, but it wasn’t until his senior year in 2017 when he really started to come into his own. Moved to more of a pass-rushing role than just hanging back, Washington State benefited from sending him on the attack as he racked up a respectable 12.0 tackles for a loss with 6.5 sacks.

General manager Bob Quinn has valued special teams contributions significantly since coming to Detroit so it’s no surprise one of his first visits is with a player known for those talents. Versatility is also key as Luvu played multiple roles during his Cougars career, including playing off the ball and rushing the passer. While his teammate, Hercules Mata’afa, gets more air time, Luvu has some strong tape to put him on teams’ radars during Day 3 of the draft, and he is the type of guy who will draw interest from teams like the Patriots, Ravens, and Chiefs, who all spend extra attention to players with special teams abilities.

The Lions putting in work for versatile depth after most likely allowing Brandon Copeland to leave without a contract isn’t surprising, and Frankie Luvu is unlikely to be the last mid-to-late round linebacker the Lions spend considerable time and energy on.
