There were pretty heavy rumors a week ago that Philly was going to bring Shady McCoy back. Haven't heard a peep about it recently, though.

Yea, that move would make sense but thought I read an article that Bills front office crushed that idea (could be just smoke)  figure the Eagles did well with Ajayi trade last year, why not try again now that he is on IR

Dorsey certainly isn’t bashful about helping teams in his own conference. First Gordon, now this. I’d be annoyed if I were a AFC GM/HC.

Broncos waive QB Chad Kelly

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Denver Broncos have waived quarterback Chad Kelly, President of Football Operations/General Manager John Elway announced on Wednesday.

“This was a decision that we made as an organization,” Elway said. “After reviewing all the information and in talking with Vance (Joseph) and Joe (Ellis), we agreed that releasing Chad was the right thing to do.

"Even though Chad’s no longer part of our team, we’ve offered to help him however we can and are supportive of him in every possible way.”

Swag Kelly has been booted out of Denver. On Wednesday morning, the Broncos announced the release of the quarterback after a bizarre incident earlier in the week.Chad-Kelly-featuredChad-Kelly-featured-2

On Monday night, Kelly attended a Halloween party hosted by Broncos star Von Miller. At the event, Kelly began acting in an aggressive manner, prompting security to pull him aside in an effort to get him to calm down (via Mike Klis of 9News). The QB called an audible and ran off the property instead, which is where the trouble began.

Just after 1am, Kelly traipsed into the home of a family he did not know, and sat down next to a woman who was holding her young child. The woman called for a man in the house, who came out and struck Kelly with an aluminum vacuum tube. Kelly returned to the party as it was dissipating and police arrived soon after to apprehend him.

Kelly’s history of bizarre off-the-field behavior undoubtedly played a role in the Broncos’ decision. Just a couple of weeks ago, Kelly had a shot at overtaking Case Keenum as the Broncos’ starter. Now, he hopes that another team will give him a chance at redemption.

NFL fires down judge Hugo Cruz, effective immediately

The NFL has taken the highly unusual step of firing down judge Hugo Cruz for performance reasons, sources confirmed to ESPN on Thursday.

Cruz last worked in Week 6 and is no longer an NFL employee.

Cruz, who joined the NFL in 2015, was responsible for one high-profile mistake this season. He missed an obvious false start by Los Angeles Chargers left tackle Russell Okung on a scoring play in Week 6 against the Cleveland Browns. He did not work in Week 7.

Otherwise, the details of the league's decision are unknown. An NFL spokesman declined to comment and representatives of the NFL Referees Association did not respond to a request for comment.

The news was first reported by FootballZebras.com, which tracks college and pro football officiating trends. According to the website, the NFL has never fired an official in-season during the Super Bowl era because of performance.

Sources reached by ESPN insisted there was no indication that Cruz committed an off-field mistake, nor that his firing was in any way based in discipline.

The NFL grades officials on their performance on every play of every game. The league has occasionally suspended or re-assigned officials for mistakes of game administration, but it evaluates their careers a yearly basis by placing each in one of three tiers.

Tier I is for the top performers, Tier II is for mid-level grades and Tier III is for the worst-performing officials in a given year. Historically, two consecutive seasons in the third tier makes an official vulnerable to termination.

That system is designed to prevent instant evaluations based on a single mistake or a series of closely-timed mistakes. The NFL's quick decision on Cruz will send shock waves through the officiating ranks. Officials who once could be assured that their season would be evaluated through a larger lens will now be left to wonder if they could receive a career-ending phone call after one bad game.

Thanks for the article.

Would it surprise anyone if he somehow “missed” the call and it directly helped to influence something in Vegas?

I’m still looking for a league-wide investigation which tracks and analyzes the effect that a wrong call or missed call at opportune moments has on each team. Would be really interested to see the +/- skew for certain specific teams.

Rams Waive OL Jamon Brown as Corresponding Roster Move for Fowler

Myles Simmons

RAMS INSIDER

As a corresponding roster move after acquiring edge rusher Dante Fowler, the Rams have waived offensive lineman Jamon Brown.

A third-round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, Brown played in 41 games — starting 30 — for the Rams over the last four seasons. Brown started all 16 games last year at right guard. He was expected to continue as Los Angeles’ starter at the position, but was suspended for the first two games of 2018. Austin Blythe took over at right guard to start Week 1, and has remained at the spot ever since.

In waiving Brown, Los Angeles now has seven offensive lineman on the active roster in starters Andrew Whitworth, Rodger Saffold, John Sullivan, Blythe and Rob Havenstein, as well as rookie reserves Joe Noteboom and Brian Allen.

Fowler joins the Rams from the Jaguars, where he was the No. 3 overall pick in 2015. Fowler has recorded 14.0 sacks, 14 tackles for loss, three forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries, and 22 QB hits in his young career.

In terms of compensation, Los Angeles will send a 2019 third-round pick and 2020 fifth-round pick to Jacksonville for Fowler. Should L.A. receive a third-round compensatory pick, that will go to Jacksonville to complete the trade in lieu of the team’s original third-round selection. If the Rams receive multiple 2019 third-round comp picks, the club will trade the compensatory selection that is closest to the beginning of the round.

2015 Draft - OL Jamon Brown

OVERVIEW

2014: Second-team All-ACC. Started all 13 games at LT. 2013: First-team All-AAC. Started all 13 games at LT. 2012: Started all 13 games at RT. 2011: Played in nine games with one start.

PRO DAY RESULTS

40-yard dash: 5.09 seconds
Vertical jump: 28 inches
Broad jump: 8 feet, 7 inches
Short shuttle: 4.7 seconds
3-cone drill: 7.36 seconds

ANALYSIS

STRENGTHS

Thick, wide frame. "Run-around" defenders have a long way to go to get around him. Adequate power in lower half to get initial push. Quicker than expected out of stance and with initial steps. Can beat defender to the spot as position blocker. Play speed will be a plus inside. Straight-line mover in space with potential to be effective blocker on inside zone plays from guard spot. Has experience at both tackle spots and at guard. Uses club move to initiate movement.

WEAKNESSES

Doesn't consistently unlock power. Has length but doesn't use it. Slow to process stunts. Struggles when defender gets to his edge. Overextends and loses assignment in pass sets. Lowers head like battering ram at punch point. Below-average recovery and redirect talent when beaten. Scouts believe conditioning is a legitimate concern for him late in games. Puts skates on when headed to second level. Must play with more body control.

DRAFT PROJECTION

Round 4 or 5

SOURCES TELL US

"He could go much higher than anyone thinks because he'll be on boards as a tackle or as a guard. He can move and he has some power so he will hit more teams draft boards than some of the other guys in the draft." - NFC Executive

NFL COMPARISON

 Dallas Thomas

BOTTOM LINE

Intriguing tackle/guard prospect. His mass and athletic limitations are best-suited inside and his quickness off the snap could be an indicator that Brown's best football could be ahead of him. With a wider base and better body control, Brown could become a starting guard or potential tackle in power scheme.

Bills should sign him before the pats* do - still not happy about baby Klecko - for all the influence ownership seems to have on FA and the draft,  a mid round pick to honor a legend and keep the family out of rival laundry is cheap.  Pegula's can sign Kelly for free and win a little fan loyalty - we know the Johnsons don't understand the fans, interesting to see if Pegula does...

He has some issues - substance abuse suspension and more DUI stuff.  May be  more to it than we know.  I am always suspicious of guys cut the day after the trade deadline.  It always seems like it is guys teams want gone, but held out for some conditional pick.  Like Marshall. I guess the Rams did need to make room for Fowler.

Fyi...from Tuesday 10/30

Tampa Bay terminated the contract of LB Kevin Minter today. One note: Today is final day that the contracts of vested veterans released terminated immediately. For the remainder of the season, those players go through the waiver system.

See next post for waiver process

Who is eligible to go through the waiver wire?

When a team releases a player with less than four years of service, he is subject to the waiver wire process. Any player with less than four years of NFL experience is subject to the waiver process upon release from their former NFL team.

What is the waiver wire?

The NFL’s waiver wire is a system that allows teams to submit a claim for a player who was cut by another team. The waiver wire operates on a 24-hour timeframe during which teams can submit a claim following a player being cut.

When a team releases a player with less than four years of service, they are subject to the waiver process. Any player with at four or more years of service who is cut is not subject to the waiver process. Players with four or more years of NFL experience immediately become free agents and can sign with any NFL team of their choosing (that’s also interested in them).

However, during the NFL season from the NFL trading deadline through the end of the regular season, vested veterans are also subject to the waiver process. That means any veterans cut after Week 8, which is October 31, 2017, will go through waivers along with non-vested veterans. (A vested veteran is a player with four or more years of NFL experience.)

Normally when a player is released, waivers run the next day. For roster cuts, all players run through waivers on Sunday, whether they were released on Friday or Saturday.

Waiver Wire Order:

During the offseason, the waiver wire order is the same as the draft order. After Week 3 of the regular season, the order turns to the standings around the league as the team with the worst record gets first priority on the waiver wire and the team with the best record gets last priority.

this is why you see cuts from the 53 and promotions from the PS on Saturday..tough for a team to put in a claim in on a player on Sunday since they would have to cut a guy from their 53 and be without the claimed player for the Sunday game

On the Jamon Brown front, part of the new CBA was proven performance escalators.

"According to the NFL’s contractual bargaining agreement, players drafted in rounds three though seven are entitled to raises during the fourth year of their respective rookie contracts. The pay bumps are tied to playing time — a player must have played in 35% of his team’s offensive or defensive snaps in two of his first three seasons, or averaged 35% playing time cumulatively during that period.

If one of these thresholds is met, the player’s salary is elevated to the level of that year’s lowest restricted free agent tender — that figure should be around $1.908MM in 2018. Players selected in the first or second round, undrafted free agents, and kickers/punters are ineligible for the proven performance escalator."

https://www.profootballrumors.com/2018/01/2018-proven-performance-escalators

Brown was only making about $680k before this year.  The extra money and suspension headache may have cost him his job.  It also indicates how poorly the Jets have drafted - the only player under Idzik or Maccagnan that has earned this was Brian WInters.  Note that only Maccagnan's first year is at year 4.  Presumably Jordan Jenkins will earn this next season. Good incentive to extend early.

We should still be looking at brown even at 1.9.  Hell we paid something idiotic like 4-6 mill for ijalana last year and he had hardly any snaps.

I don't think that contract is remotely prohibitive for the Jets.  My point was, after missing time/letting his teammates down, it might not have been what the Rams wanted to keep around.  This was his contract year,  If they weren't planning on keeping him, the only reason to carry him would he a potential 2020 comp pick. They have Noteboom and Allen, their 3rd and 4th this year on the o-line.  Their practice squad shows a couple of guys that played for them last year and the Saints 2018 5th rounder all on the o-line. Those guys are cheaper and can be locked up longer.

How the hell does this guy keep getting $20M a year contracts?

Has there ever been a player in NFL history who was paid so well, year in year out, while producing so little?

Edit: career earnings to date - over $130 million.
