New York Jets coaching staff updates

• OC: Mike LaFleur, San Francisco 49ers (2020)
• QB: Greg Knapp, Atlanta Falcons (2020) 
• RB: Taylor Embree, Colorado University (2020) 
• WR: Miles Austin, formerly San Francisco 49ers (2019) 
• OL/run game coordinator: John Benton, San Francisco 49ers (2020) 
• Pass game specialist: Rob Calabrese, Denver Broncos (2020) 

Unofficial

• DC: Jeff Ulbrich, Atlanta Falcons (could also coach LBs)

 

Notes: 

• Hiring John Benton is a huge score. One of the best line coaches in the league; Jets were able to lure him by “promoting” to Run Game Coordinator.
• Not news: Douglas/Saleh/LaFleur are all Sam Darnold fans.  News: Greg Knapp is a huge Sam Darnold fan. He’s coached among the best, and thought Darnold was Andrew Luck-level prospect. More and more it’s looking like this coaching staff will look to develop Darnold as opposed to getting rid of him. Rich Scangarello, who the Jets also considered, signed with the 49ers.
• Raheem Morris is among the top candidates for the DC position, but it sounds like he’ll choose JAX. It makes sense for him (more power, no state income tax, etc.) 
• There are a number of defensive coaches being looked at, many who have worked with Saleh before (Todd Walsh, Marquand Manuel, Mike Rutenberg). Another name to keep an eye on is Anthony Weaver; he’s highly respected and Joe Douglas likes him a lot

The first thing I would like all of these Darnold "fan" coaches to do is to take Sam aside and tell him, if he ever fails to throw the frigg'n ball away and runs OB behind the line of scrimmage under their watch they will beat the living sh*t out of him.

I would make that second... make him repeat to the OC before he breaks every hudlle “we are wearing green and white.”If not, report immediately to @Sonny Werblin?

Imagine having an OL coach who actually knows what he is doing. 

Love the emphasis on building a quality staff. It sounds like a no brainer but we simply have not done this in over a decade.

It looks like Dowell Loggains was severely underpaid. It takes 4 coaches to replace him.

 

Looks like we are finally making a commitment to coaching/ offense.

I’ll be interested in who the strength and conditioning coach is as well as the training staff. We could use a major upgrade there.

Props to the Johnson family for making an investment into an extensive coaching staff to fully support the development of our players. Not sure why these past few years we have been w/o a qb coach for a struggling Qb!

Yes, and I am pretty sure it is the same guy that Gase hired as QB coach when he was in Denver.

John Fox was the head coach in Denver at the time and he hired Greg Knapp to be the QB coach and he promoted Adam Gase from wide receivers coach to OC.  Two years later John Fox left and went to Chicago and took Adam Gase with him to be his OC again. 
 

Gary Kubiak was then hired to coach the Broncos and he retained Knapp as his QB coach. That was the year they won the Super Bowl with Peyton Manning.

Between the fair catches, poor tackling and the refusal to just let Mann handle the KO duties after he outperformed the FG kickers, I am done with Boyer. And when your Punter is the best tackler on your punt cover team, it is time for the ST coach to go.

I know there are two coaching threads so maybe we can merge them, but as far as updates go: 

• I think the offensive staff is complete minus a few assistants that will likely be added. I don't think there's as much of a rush to get those spots filled as are the other ones. 
• I like how Saleh prioritized the offense first. Defense is his comfort zone and he has a number of candidates lined up who are in demand with other staffs (see Jacksonville, Dallas, Las Vegas), but instead of wasting time courting those guys he filled the entire offense with some rock-solid coaches. Knapp and Benton are grand slam hires, LaFleur was one of the top options available, and Calabrese has fans in the NFL.

I was kinda hoping that Aaron Glenn's interview for the head coaching job may've been a prelude to hiring him as DC, but I also want Saleh to put his staff together without Joe Douglas pushing anyone on him (but I'm in favor of each man having input into the other's domain, as a good partnership should work). Now I'm thinking that the Glenn interview may've just been a profile-raising favor for a former Jets' star, which is also okay with me.

Absolutely imperative to get the offensive staff together to start getting set up..... especially with the Watson drama playing out! I’d be on a Zoom conference telling Lefleur and Knapp to get on the “All 22” and have an answer to me by Friday if #1 Darnold can be redeemed #2 Fields, Wilson or Lance.  #3 Would Watson be worth the investment over roster building with Sam or drafted QB?

Second that. Glenn was and is a class act. That's what a good organization should do, help good people that were good to you.
