Aaron Rodgers to the Jets rumor: Merged

Can you name one other time in the NFL where everyone acts like it's a "done deal" for weeks without it actually being a done deal?

It's just strange. Not saying it doesn't get done, but I can't think of any other situation like this.

It’s strange but it’s a very unique situation for a variety of reasons - the biggest being that there is only one serious suitor for Aaron Rodgers. Usually, you have multiple teams in the mix for these guys and things move along much more rapidly.

For the Packers, the Jets are the only game in town and vice versa for the jets since they are all in on Rodgers. This has meant that the teams can afford to be stubborn, patient, and procrastinate while they wait for any meaningful deadline. Nothing really has to get done until the draft at the earliest, so it hasn’t.

One week to go fellas. The tumblers for Aaron Rodgers being unlocked from GB begin turning.

April 17: Packers can start offseason workout program

Teams with new coaches can start the offseason workout program on April 3, but the Packers – under fifth-year coach Matt LaFleur – must wait two weeks. If Aaron Rodgers returns, will he participate in the program from the start? He’s been absent each of the last two offseasons. The prep for the 2023 season begins.

May 2: Deadline for using fifth-year option

This is a big one. Will the Packers use the fifth-year option on Jordan Love, a first-round pick from the 2020 draft? Last year, the Packers exercised fifth-year options on both Rashan Gary and Darnell Savage. If not exercised, Love would be entering the final year of his rookie deal in 2023.

Thought for sure it would be done by the draftt but the way they are playing this I have a bad feeling it’s gonna stretch to June 1 to help alleviate the cap hit to GB.  Hope I’m wrong.

Take a look at Packers' roster and tell me they aren't drooling for that extra round 2 pick.

This trade happens no sooner than 48 hours before the draft and could take place as late as when the Jets go OTC for their second 2nd rd pick.  That's the window for us.

Geez, GM says “he’s gonna be here”. Telling fans you got your QB but crafty enough to use words that don’t get him in trouble. Why are so many worrying about tampering, breathe easy, I know it’s hard to believe but the Jets can have nice things.

Our fans love being negative ?

Kevin Durant to the Knicks was a done deal for about 2 years

Joe Douglas

For those Jets fans claiming the comments from Joe Douglas at a New York event promising that the arrival of Aaron Rodgers was going to happen meant the deal was done, you may want to take a seat for this one.

Rich Cimini of ESPN New York claims that while Douglas was having a good time playing to a New York crowd, there has been no movement on the deal between the Jets and Packers since the owners meetings in Phoenix.  It was at those meetings that Douglas said he was “very optimistic” that a deal would get done, but the teams clearly hadn’t gotten to the finish line just yet.

Some context: This was a lighthearted moment at a private WFAN event. Douglas, being a good guest, was playing to a pro-Jets crowd. From my understanding, nothing has changed re: trade talks since the NFL meetings in Phoenix, where Douglas told reporters he was "very optimistic" https://t.co/MvGkm79CiS

— Rich Cimini (@RichCimini) April 8, 2023

While it would appear that by rule, the comments from Douglas would meet the league’s threshold for tampering, it would take a complaint being filed by the Packers which is extremely unlikely at this point.

How could it be tampering if the teams have permission to work out a trade, you ask?  Well, a quick look at the NFL bylaws show that tampering can happen in more ways than one when teams are talking trade.  The first would be attempting to work out a trade without permission from the club with which the player being discussed is under contract.

The other states that those executives involved in ongoing trade discussions may not publicly divulge contents of the conversations going on between the clubs, which one could argue Douglas did by claiming Rodgers would be coming to the Jets, suggesting the deal is done.  This despite the fact that the deal is clearly not yet wrapped up.

So still….we wait.

It's a ******* joke that this is still going on. GM getting drunk at events claiming it's happening.. embarrassing for everyone involved.

A deal probably is in place it if the packers pull out last second and send Rodgers to the 49ers this will be an epic debacle

If the trade doesn’t happen they will draft Levis at 13.  That’s their only way to save face because if it doesn’t happen now after this Oh Dear

the real kick in the dick is when they trade up to pick 5 to get Levis

There were tons of folks yelling and screaming yesterday that Joe D's proclamation on stage was confirmation that a deal was done.

Seems it was more wishful thinking than anything else.

Why is JN posting this crap?

Because JN stands for JetNation, in which the "Jet" portion refers to the New York Jets of the NFL.  Rich Cimini covers the New York Jets of the NFL for ESPN.  What Cimini is saying makes far more sense than nonsensical rantings of those who think the Jets and Packers completed a trade and for some reason decided they'd wait four to six weeks to make it official.

Tell the Packers we’ll pick this up after the draft. Period.

Said this the other day.  Rodgers is available now and he'll be available after the draft.  No other team is dumb enough to take on that atrocious contract.  No reason not to keep all picks this year and resume talks after the draft.

There was no tampering, just stop Cimini.

There was tampering, but the Packers aren't gonna' raise a stink about it.  Bad business to go after the only team doing you a solid by absorbing the worst contract you've ever handed out.

Yeah I believe Rich Cimini over Joe Douglas. I mean, he covers the Jets for the NFL. He knows everything.
