Happy Juneteenth!!!

Sad how this is now a national holiday yet there are demands of reparations spreading like wildfire throughout the country.  Completely undermines Juneteenth.

Of course this would be a take in this thread.  Of course.  How dare people demand some equity after centuries of being denied the opportunity at generational wealth.  How dare they.

And someone in this thread claimed race and racism isn't that big of a deal any longer.  Kneejerk reactions to this thread prove just how far there is still to go.

Ps what does this have to do with anything?

Nah nothing it should be ignored. That’ll solve it.

Happy Juneteenth everyone!!

Oh wait I see you think I’m a gun nut because I think we shouldn’t ignore people slaughtering each other. I bet I’m a trans hater anti abortionist too!

Celebrating human freedom and dignity, while remembering the depths of human evil, is always a good thing.

Indeed.  Always good to keep in mind.  The difference between a villain and a victim is context and circumstances.  The African slave trade started in Africa between Africans.  Europeans and other peoples became embroiled as victimizers.  Europeans abolished slavery on moral grounds.  Americans subsequently did the same.  The moral, political and military impetus behind abolition in Europe and America lie with light skinned people of European decent.  The accepted number of deaths during the civil war has been 620,000.  Recent research suggests it was closer to 700,000. Along with the dead, approximately 475,000 were wounded or maimed.  The larger point... The group we label as "white" or "black" as with all other "groups" fit the role as victim or victimizer.  The humanity never changes.  Only context and circumstances.  Also good to keep in mind.  Other historic exploiters such as the Spartans & Bolsheviks used non "race" based pretexts in order to marginalize and victimize a target group.  The triviality of skin tone didn't play a part.  Just the defects of the human qualities.

Look, he is completely fine being forced to celebrate America's birthday. But why should the end of chattel slavery in the United States be a subject for celebration?

I agree with this post 100%... meanwhile, as we discuss the end of chattel slavery in the United States, the European powers that actually enacted, enforced, and supplied slavery in the Americas right now:

You post an article that has nothing to do with anything, I ask you why, now you're playing victim?

Sounds strangely familiar.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA.  What?  It is a relatively new holiday.  I talked to a bunch of people who have no clue what it is.

Passive aggressive racism?  HAHAHAAHAHAHAHA.  Too funny.

That's because no one bothers to learn about this country's history.

They have their own days throughout the year. France and UK observe the official UNESCO date for the Haitian Revolution, I believe.

People that slaughter each other in the numbers that black people do are not free. So yeah happy Juneteenth.

The biggest celebrators of Juneteenth are the same people that have been perpetuating the same mindset and enacting the same policies in the same places for 50 years that have not done a ******* thing for anyone. White supremacists couldn’t do a better job.

it’s the self congratulation that irks the sh*t out of me.

You're proving how far we have to go too.

The bolded is quite true, sadly.

Too many people have made viewing the United States the same way the view religion, as perfect and infallible in it's consistent greatness and perfection, a core part of their self-identify.  They simply cannot and will not accept any nuance on the topic, America is great and perfect, exceptional in a way no other group of humans could be, and anyone who doesn't think so, or thinks anything in the past was objectively wrong, or that anything going forward can be improved, must be one of them dirty socialists/communists who hates 'Merica.

The fact is America and Americans have been both a force for great good, and a force of great evil, at various times and in various places over our history.  Just like every other people or country.  We're not perfect, we've done horrible things, and speaking plainly about those things is how we avoid doing them again in the future.  It's not "hating" America, as is laughably claimed.  It's trying to make sure we actually live up to our claimed ideals, the ideals so many folks claim to love but rarely actually want to live up to in reality.

You can see it in this thread, the various people who feel an overwhelming need to "explain" slavery or obfuscate Americas sins by blaming others, by blaming the victims even, by claiming it wasn't so bad really, or everyone was doing it, or making it about this political party or that today, in various laughable ways, because they simply cannot accept that America and Americans did something wrong.

SMH.

Agree with everything written here, but I believe it also should be acknowledged that for every "America is perfect" lunatic there is an "America is evil" lunatic. As you point out, these are human issues, not American ones, and the truth lies in a nuanced middle - we are capable of both greatness and terrible evil.

Some of the drooling mouth breathers on my ignore list really showed why they are on it in this thread sadly.

A lot of restraint being showed by the posters with the capacity for critical thought and an understanding of our history.

I’d ban at least 3 posters for this ugly hate. No need to sugar coat it.

Man you are ****ed up and I hope you get banned

cc @Maxman

You should get banned you seem to like black people murdering each other by the thousands. I don’t.

I want African Americans to achieve true freedom. You don’t.

I don’t believe white supremacists should be allowed on football forums, but that’s just me.
