Why are all these other teams able to compete with backup QBs?

Recommended Posts

Watching the games yesterday.  The Steelers looked good with Rudolph who was 3rd on their depth chart and the Chargers lost but played competitively with Easton Stick (sounds like a bat)
Yet Cincy looked dreadful with Jake Browning, their own backup QB.

The difference is over the course of 17 games a second string QB will show all his warts. If Rodgers  just missed the Jets first 7 games he would have come back to a 4-3 record, which would have been ok. Unfortunately when the starter is out for the whole season, it usually dooms the season.

There is a reason why there are only 32 starting QB's in the league, and of those 32, there is only a dozen who can really take you to a Super Bowl, unless one of the other 20 happens to get hot for a few weeks at the right time (Nick Foles anyone?)

Toss in that we have had about 13 different players play on the OLine this year, and it doesn't take long to figure out why we suck.

Oline

this isn’t difficult

It goes beyond the OL. The skill group has two, maybe three guys who are average or better NFL starters. Call it two above average (Wilson, Hall) and one average (Conklin). The offense is pretty devoid of talent, certainly not one with the caliber of players that can lift up a backup QB.

The plan this year was for a 40 year old future Hall of Famer to elevate a seriously flawed group that they just have not done a good job putting together.

They can and should fix backup QB this offseason but the problems on offense definitely run deeper than just who’s under center.

Are they really ? You might get a spark for a week or two but it really hasn’t been sustainable.

This

IDK how anyone believes JD can fix this in one offseason.

We are in the conference with all the young QBs who teams will also make improvements

A rookie LT and a 40 year old on one leg isn’t enough and add a JD free agency / draft and this is an obvious implosion waiting to happen

Dreadful?  Yes Browning didnt play well but he threw for 335 yards which would be get a Jets QB inducted into the ring of honor.

Because Zach was intentionally left on the roster by the owner and the Jets weren’t allowed to bring in anyone who could surpass him on the depth chart. Everyone also knew Zach couldn’t play, but again we have an owner who likes to tinker and meddle.

The owner refused to believe that wilson sucked as bad as he did, yet, he went along with douglas’ plan to trade (by the plan) a 2nd and a 1st rounder for Aaron rodgers.  In hindsight, IMO the deal that douglas cut with woody was, look, we’ll trade all these premium picks for rodgers with the hope he gets us over the hump, but to appease you woody, we’ll keep Wilson and rodgers will tutor him and say nice things about him so Wilson’s family doesn’t flip out when rodgers comes.
