Victor Ochi JN

By Glenn Naughton

In need of a blocking tight end with Kellen Davis nursing a hyper-extended elbow, the New York Jets have waived outside linebacker Victor Ochi and added former Texans tight end Eric Tomlinson from Houston’s practice squad.

NFL.com had this to say about Tomlinson, a 6′ 6”, 263 lb Texas-El Paso product.

ANALYSIS

STRENGTHS

Big-bodied blocker. Has room for more weight on his frame. Takes good initial step to secure leverage as a run blocker. Shows ability to recover and wash defender down and out of play. Has functional upper-body power and can sustain his in-line blocks.

WEAKNESSES

Slow, plodding release off the line of scrimmage and into his routes. Doesn’t have athleticism to shake defender in man coverage. Needs to keep running feet through contact as drive blocker. Improvement needed with his angles and accuracy on second-level blocks.

BOTTOM LINE

Limited tight end who was primarily used as a blocker in college. Tomlinson will have to prove to teams that he has premium ability to develop as an in-line blocker because it is unlikely that most teams will view him as a combo tight end once they study the tape.

With Davis out and Austin Seferian-Jenkins recently missing time with a balky ankle, the Jets were even thinner than usual at the tight end position.

I thought we had four of these guys around, we really needed another one?  Can't you find one guy to be able to run a decent route, catch a ball and block occasionally?

One is done for the year, Davis is now injured and sucks, ASJ is injured and drunk. That leaves only Bostick. Only the Jets could have 4 TEs and 4 QBs and still have zero of both.

This.  And all it really boils down to is Davis.  He's the primary blocking TE and he's hurt.  Hopefully this guy is better, but with a 40 time just under 5 seconds, I don't see him being much more than an extra OT.

Funny, I thought ASJ was healthy enough to play.  At least the Injury Report said he was practicing again. Probably going to be on the toilet a while though.

He is, but he's not a blocker.  Davis is the blocker and he's hurt.

ASJ has been on the injury list for weeks, and was still limited this week.

He was limited, but expected to play today, and whether  he plays or not, Tomlinson isn't coming in to take on his role.

The TE position on this team has been a mess for 2 seasons thanks Macc.

Austin Seferian-Jenkins will prove to be a nice pick-up.  He is a young talented TE, a real receiving threat,  with personal issues.  He is only 24 so hopefully he will mature.

Bingo, he's been injured, He's a good pickup, I think our receiving options have improved with the influx of youth. Pity we don't have a QB..

This is one of the most true and sad statements ever made on this board. Once again the Jets have found a way to blow my mind with a unique way to suck that is all Jets.

Why is it that The Lord of the Evil Empire up North has no problem finding top producing TEs, despite leading our division since the turn of the century?

TE is the hottest plus-matchup trend in the league. Jets jump on this trend by rostering 57 TEs who can't catch.

Coaching clinic.

I dont know about that.

ASJ can catch. He cant stay healthy.  Bostick has actually caught some passes. We dont know if any of the others can catch because they are never thrown to.
