is this it for Rex?

I can't disagree on the takeaway thing. I'd prefer a defense that focuses on taking the ball away rather than being #2 in the league in yards allowed. I'd like to see the team going for the ball more until, of course, I start seeing missed tackles because we're pawing at the ball rather than wrapping up. But yeah, it's something Rex's defenses have never excelled at, and it's an issue.

Offensively, they drilled into Sanchez not to to turn the ball over to the point that he couldn't even play the position. Maybe he could never play the position, but the coaches turned him into a frightened turtle. I'm actually all for the Jets having Geno sling it. Yes, he absolutely needs to learn not to make the dumb turnover, especially in the red zone, but I don't want it to come at the expense of his gunslinging personality. I like that he threw for over 300 yards this week. His ability to move the ball is a positive - especially with these receivers. I don't want him coached to be afraid to throw it. It's a fine line, I guess.

The penalties haven't always been an issue with Rex's teams, it's more a recent thing. Adding guys like Colon and Giacomini, who committed a lot of fouls in Pittsburgh and Seattle, respectively, doesn't help.

Uh, they also pulled him from the punt return unit for the rest of the game. How much more accountable are they supposed to hold him? A little positive reinforcement in the moment probably didn't hurt there, either. Pretty sure the kid knew he ****ed up big time. Chewing him out on top of that wasn't going to help.

Not sure what this list of serious problems is, though. Timeout management, in particular, was good this week. Biggest problem on the team continues to be a lack of talent at a few critical spots. Jets have the lowest payroll in the league, and that includes something like $12M in dead money in the names of Sanchez, Holmes, and Cromartie. It's impressive that they've been as competitive as they have given what they're trotting out there.

Unless Geno really turns his game around, Rex has failed to develop 2 QBs that were high draft picks. Sanchez should have sat out a year and now it looks like Geno is following in his feet prints.

If Rex doesn't know how to bring a QB along then its his job to find coaches that can.

It's called "management".  After reaching a certain level, it is imperative to get results out of the efforts and talent of other people rather than try to be hands-everywhere.  Rex lacks this gene.  He would be just as awful in any other business as he is on football when it comes to this.  It's not his bag.

The Herm teams were so poorly coached from an x's and o's standpoint....but the playoffs 3 times out of 5 years(remember those conversations???) happened because we didnt commit penalties, protected the football and forced turnovers. Something we've never done under Rex. We're careless with the football, don't take away the football and commit a ton of penalties. A well coached team combines those two...which is why Belichicks been so successful. Protect the ball, give up yards but create takeaways and dont commit dumb penalties.

Yeah, funny how it works when you do not take yourself out of the game.

Isn't Rex somewhat hands off when it comes to offense?

Rex relies on blind faith too much. He said that he has no plans to sit Geno.

Hands off and managing his subordinates are two different things and therein lies the problem.  Rex is either myopically involved or completely disconnected.  He really is the perfect poster child for the Peter Principle.

Dawidoff gets into this in detail. The way he tried delegating authority and gameplans to Pettine was bizarre. It looks like he keeps Thurman on a much shorter leash, but the disconnect with Marty looks about the same as it was with Schottenheimer.

Which is why we are so screwed.  Gonna be a long season.

rex has one move left to save his job, make vick the starter.

history has proven he is too loyal to his starting QB tho

I don't think he makes the move until its too late, and that will be his legacy

I kind of agree with you , Rex's only move is to play Vick ,the Jet's brought him here to play, If Geno  plays poorly this week , I think Rex will pull Geno and play Vick to save the season and his Job

Look, I was among the biggest Vick supporters in the preseason. I predicted Vick would swoop in and take em to 9-7 in Max's prediction thread. Why can't Vick be another Vinny T I said.

And truly, that was a terrible pick 6 Geno threw on MNF

but still... it's at least possible Geno is better than Vick.

Vick looks weak. The dude has played. He gets like 2 snaps a game and it's always a misadventure.

If I were setting odds for Vegas, the most likely outcome, is that both of them stink.

That being said QB is not really Rex's call... it's Idzik's call. When it was Sanchez vs Smith last year (another Sophie's choice), Idzik says in  press conference that it's a group decision.

He's Rex's boss. That means it's really Idzik decision. You can't really make a true group decision with your boss in the group. Tanny used to pull the same group decision crap on draft day. It's not a group decision. who starts at QB is a GM level decision. In other franchises that's not the case (and yes part of that is Rex not being an offensive specialist).

You think it Idzik call how play QB, he brought Rex back and who have to let him coach , the problem with Geno he just disappears during the game , he played a great half at Greenbay and disappears in the second half , the Bear game Geno was a no show

Gno has 4 INTS and 2 fumbles through 3 games. The Bears dropped 2 more INTS.

Again he ran backwards only to get sacked. Vick couldn't possibly be this bad.

I agree but I would rather watch geno fail and get us a good pick than watch vick only partially fail and win a few more games (getting us a worse pick) while having to root for the scumbag

Vick has been in for 1 play per game. Tebow had more snaps than that.

If Idzik is calling the shots on who plays and who sits then Rex deserves no blame. Rex is just following orders and doing the best that he can for his bosses.

Vick has been that bad before.

There's absolutely no logic in giving up on a flawed but very talented young QB 4 games into a season. He is making visible progress. He looks far more composed and he's generally far more accurate. When he misses he tends to miss wildly and he still really struggles when the pressure gets to him. You have to see if he can work through these issues though, you can't quit on the guy now. The time for that decision is the end of the season - Particularly when you consider the alternative.

Vick is 34. He's injury prone, physically declining, was never that brilliant to begin with. He actually still has a lot of the issues Geno has. Long term the switch would make no sense, and unless we're in playoff contention in spite of Geno (which isn't going to happen), it would make no sense in the short term either.

I liked the Vick pickup because I thought he would actually be a solid backup - To start in the very realistic chance that Geno would get hurt. He still might be that. He's not a viable option to start though, particularly when Geno clearly outperformed him in TC/Pre-season, it makes no f*cking sense to put him in.

You gain something with Geno whether he sucks or not. You gain nothing with Vick.

Yeah. That's not how it works.

Green Bay, Denver and Indy seem to trip and fall into them.

Denver had Elway and that's it.

I have my doubts about Andy Luck, but tanking a whole season for the 1st overall pick isn't exactly falling into a QB.

The Jets are due for a stud QB.

Turnovers are doing the Jets in. What progress are you seeing there?

Its Sanchez all over again where the defense plays its axx off only to have the QB give the game away.

Elway, Cutler, Manning. Cutler's obviously not at the level of the others but I'd still say he's a franchise QB, he was very good when he was there.

Luck is obviously a franchise QB already even if he is a little overrated.

I think you're mixing up what a franchise QB is and all time greats.

We're due **** all.

His passing stats are improved in pretty much every category. He's moving the ball consistently - His completion % is almost 10% higher. Which is significant.

He has a lot of issues still to work through, but don't tell me he hasn't progressed. He has, it's blatantly obvious just watching him. I think people forget how bad he was when he was bad last year.
