Jets Have to Cut 35 Players - Here's my analysis

With the retirement of Davis and the release of Dane Cruikshank, the Jets have 88 players on the roster.  Meaning they have to cut 35 players to get down to 53.

By my count, there are 18 easy cuts (Bold Red) - so that gets us down to 70.  And there are 7 pretty straight forward, reasonable cuts (Bold Orange) - which gets us down to 63. And 1 player who will likely go on PUP (Bold Blue) - which gets us to 62. Of the final 9, 7 are not that difficult (Bold Green)/

THE FINAL 2 CUTS WILL BE:

• Cut 1 from the group of: OT Billy Turner, OT Carter Warren, DT Solomon Thomas, LB Chazz Surratt, or S Trey Dean - I'll say Thomas gets the axe and Jets keep 10 O linemen
• Cut either CB Bryce Hall or CB Craig James - I'll say Hall sticks around

The thing is will JD keep the players he knows and signed and formed a relationship with in training camp. Or sign players he wanted to draft or sign cut by other teams. And if he does how many. You'd expect if it's close he'll keep his guys.

You think them cutting Brownlee is "not too difficult"? Really?! I think it's totally possible and incredibly hard to say if they keep 5 or 6 WR. In fact I'm betting they keep 6.

You’re probably right, but I still maintain that the Jets would be better off with a guy like Dean on the present roster over Brownlee.

Dean has consistently flashed at a position that the Jets have f*ck all at beyond this year. People are just assuming that Tony Adams is going to be a main fixture, god knows why. But Whitehead, Clark, Davis, etc will all be gone after this season. 

Brownlee has a better chance of clearing waivers and landing back on the PS than a guy like Dean does.

Amazing job by Gipson.  Aaron Rodgers specifically mentioned him in his press conference tonight.  He is a lock.

One move I think the Jets make that no one is discussing is that they IR Carl Lawson. He can barely walk. Maybe they give him the IR with option to return designation. Not sure how many of them there are.

Also feel Hardee is FAR from a lock for the roster, His use is only as a ST guy. I think the Jets roster decisions are too tight to keep him. Brownlee was in as a gunner tonight and was in position to make plays. I can make an argument that Yeboah has more value to this team than Hardee.

I know fans want to be completely all in on just this year but I doubt that the Jets and JD see it that way. I think we make sure we have the strongest roster for the next 2 years rather than just for this one.

Along those lines WR TE and S might see some unusual numbers.

WR Mecole and Cobb (future coach:?) have 1 year contracts. Davis just retired. I think the Jets definitely keep 6 WR, because even then we go into next year with only 4. After tonight no way Gibson makes it through cuts. Brownlee helped himself tonight a lot but still on the fringe Rodgers has called out Brownlee a few times, and specifically called out Gibson. Saleh will want a waiver wire guy at WR. Will be interesting to see what happens at 6. Could be a situation where Brownlee makes the 53 but then is cut for a waiver wire WR the next day and they hope that he makes it to the PS which might be easier after the first wave of cuts and waiver claims. Which will be completely crazy this year. I could also see cutting Cobb and putting him on the PS. Use the gameday promotion and then re-evaluate in case of injury or how Brownlee and Gibson are playing. Vested veterans are not subject to waivers so the PS would be guaranteed

TE Like WR we are short 2 next year, good chance Conklin and Uzomah are gone next year. I think Uzomah could be a "shock" cut. If Yeboah is healthy I think overall he has more value than Hardee. Ruckert is a starter, and would not be shocked to see Kuntz make the 53. I could see Uzomah cut and then Conklin Ruckert Yeboah and Kuntz as the keepers.

S I see no way that they cut Dean.

3rd QB rule or not I think the Jets keep only Zach and Rodgers Keeping a 3rd QB definitely eliminates a good player from the roster and he'll make it to the PS anyway.

Oh I see now. Sarge has Boyle getting cut. I would be SHOCKED by that. You can dress a 3rd QB this year for injury protection. They would be insane to not take advantage of that.

Also I feel like Solomon Thomas had a good camp. I think he is squeezing on to the roster. But that DLine group, damn someone is going to take whoever the Jets cut. So much talent there.

I would be incredibly surprised if Carter Warren was cut.

Same with Nick Bawden.

I’d replace both of those guys with Kuntz and Brownlee, who I think they will try and stash on the practice squad.

Yeah I don't know Hackett's offense well enough, but I know they want a full back. That probably would cost Kuntz and he seems like he needs development time anyway.

Outside of his personality, I don’t think he is better than Bam. He is not good at blocking or running in between the tackles. I think we go into the season with 3 backs with Abikinada going to IR.

I didn’t know about the 3 QB rule. Boyle is definitely safe then.

Gonna agree with several of the comments so far:

Definitely think the FB Bawden makes the team.  

Kuntz almost assuredly goes to the P.S., too many bodies ahead of him and he isn't ready for primetime yet.  He's on the roster next year when Uzomah or Conklin or both are dumped.

I see the logic of Solomon Thomas sticking, but as Max says, there is no lossless cut here, it's an over-invested group, and you can only have so many, we're going to cut someone decent.

I could see them only go with 5 WR's (Wilson/Lazard/Hardman/Cook/Someone) and putting a Brownlee or Gipson or the like on the P.S.

Universally, I think Jets Fans think "we can't put X on the P.S., he'll get taken right away" far too much.  It doesn't happen that much, and fans over-estimate how good they think our fringe guys are.  Even if a Brownleee is snagged, such is life, you have to prioritize the roster as a whole, not one position group, and fringe WR's are findable via street FA's if the need arises midseason, or via another WR you sign to your own P.S. from someone elses castoffs.

If both Cook and Hall were 100%, and Izzy hadn't gotten hurt, I could absolutely see BOTH Carter and Knight cut/on the P.S.  They're clearly the worst two RB's on this team today.  But with all three of the better backs hurt/recovering, Carter may make the team for a little while, and get P.S.'ed once Izzy returns and/or Cook/Hall show they're 100%.  Again, he's not good enough a RB to hold him active over better players at other positions.

I could see the Jets carry 4 backs for a bit (Cook/Hall/Izzy/Carter) and cut Carter to the P.S. when Izzy is healthy, and bring Kuntz or Brownlee/Gipson to the active  roster then.  Something to think about.

I think they have Carter rated higher than Bam. At one point last year Bams stock might have been at the same level.

But now that they have had an extended look I believe bam is getting cut and put back on the practice squad.
