Would you do a trade back? Bryce Huff for Hassan Reddick, plus getting our 3rd round draft pick back?

Recommended Posts

I read that Hassan Reddick would not be opposed to getting traded back to the Eagles.  Through 3 games, Hall has a total of 1 tackle.  I believe no pressures, and no sacks.

Thus far, the signing of Huff hasn't worked out for them, and the trade for Reddick hasn't worked out for the NY Jets either.

Personally, I would do the deal.  First, I would imagine that we would only have to pay Bryce roughly $13M left on his contract for this season, since 4 games are already gone.

He only has $34M guaranteed in his contract, so after this year, I would imagine that the Jets would be on the hook for the remaining $17M of the guaranteed contract.

What say you?

We didn’t want to sign Huff coming off a 10 sack season. Now we’re going to take on his $19m contract after he’s been a complete 0 first 3 games? No thanks

You're missing something very important in your analysis.  To go along with his 10 sacks in 2023, Huff led the NFL among all edge rushers with his 21.8% pressure rate (minimum 200 pass rushes).

Pressure on the opposing QB is very significant.  It directly leads to more effective defense against the pass, and can cause incompletions and getting off the field for the defense.

No.  Douglas didn't want to pay Huff in the first place, why in the world would he assume his bloated contract now?

But he was willing to pay Reddick $14.5 Mill for his services, and willing to part with a 3rd or 2nd round draft pick.  Maybe that's why he would be willing to make the deal.  Huff's sacks and 1st in the NFL pressure rate in 2023 would be part of that reason he would do the deal.

That’s nice, but Huff was pretty excited to get away from the Jets and I don’t know if his humbling play in Philly has corrected his 20/20 hindsight.

The contract is dirt cheap for the next two years, though, especially once you pull out the signing bonus that the Eagles would have to eat; just $1.1M this year, and $4.3M in 2025. Problem is a guaranteed option bonus or two that result in a dead money hit in 2027 of $21M. Still, for win-now purposes, I’d have no real issue with it as long as Huff was happy to come back and reprise his role. I have no problem with an executive who admits a mistake and corrects it. There are people here who still think franchising Huff at $21M for just this season would’ve been a good idea, getting him for two years, $5.4M would be a lot better.

I’d rather just work things out with Reddick and get him in here ASAP

Agreed but that was a factor of Bryce Huff and what Bryce huff wanted. If he did comeback I would have to assume our staff could use him in a much more effective manner. Pretty sweet him and McDonald both coming of the edge on 3rd down!

Get Huff and JFM back for the stretch run. I've heard worse ideas.

Sign Sam Darnold to back up AR8 for next year and beyond.

I think I’d opt for jfm long before thinking about huff.  The jets defense needs three down players not situational.  But it seems to me if there were teams that were considering Reddick at 22 million per year they should be approached.

Denver is never giving JFM back.  Not unless they rip the Jets off in the process.  Denver's defense is surging and JFM is a part of that.

If Jets can get Huff back without paying much, sure.  I was a fan of Huff, but I'm not interested in paying him much after watching every Eagles game so far this season.

JD definitely let JFM go too cheaply. Too giddy over acquiring redDick, he basically just gave him away.

I don't really want Huff back on the deal Philly gave him. I don't know that Huff would want to come back anyway, as I'd guess the jets would have offered him a semi comparable contract (at least 10m a year) if he did want to be here. Maybe that's changed, but I doubt it.

I'd just take our 2026 3rd back and send them Reddick, if they'd do that for some crazy reason. JD will have other free agent and trade options to explore if we can rely on getting back that cap room + pick trade capital.

Teams knew Jets needed to dump him because of the cap. Considering he was acquired via a waiver claim still came out ahead.

I have no crystal ball, but I would bet that his humbling would prompt him to wish he was back with the Jets, with his new contract intact.

The fans loved him, the coaches loved him, and his teammates loved him.  He thought he was an every down player, but now he must be searching for answers.  Coming back to the NY Jets would give him those answers, I do believe.

Huff is the worst run defender in the league. He got what he asked for. Now he’s crying.

eff him

Why knock the guy?  He was a solid player for the Jets, and he never complained.  And he never bad mouthed the Jets after leaving.

Its insane to me that anyone would want Huff back at his current price.

I liked Huff from the day we signed him and couldnt be happier for him to sign that deal, but he is simply not worth that amount of money.  Hes a situational pass rusher, and if he wants to tear up his deal and play for $8 million a year then Id love to have him back.

At $19 - thats someone else's problem.  Id rather pay Jamien Sherwood who is proving to be a possibly elite cover LB which is so key to todays NFL and especially in our defense.

Looks like it would be 2 years $18MM all-in (roughly), including the remainder of this season. Checking the cap sites it's the signing bonus Philadelphia already paid (wouldn't apply to the Jets) + minimum base salaries both years (guaranteed at ~$1MM) + $16MM option bonus next year (guaranteed).

That's just cash/payments. Seems to match the broad strokes of $34MM guaranteed at signing, with y3 being at the team's pleasure.

The cap hits would be mostly what you laid out, except there only seems to be one guaranteed option bonus. $1MM this year, $4MM next year, and (upon releasing him in early March of 2026) a dead hit of $13MM in 2026.

They could move it around so more of it hits now, in theory -- the optics may be better, but on paper it's pointless. Douglas could/would just carry over the unused space from '24 anyway (plus leaving it as is leaves options open for another last-minute pickup, noting the deadline seems to be a week later this season than in the past). The only tangible benefit to spreading it out more evenly is in advance quieting the hysterics for the inevitable when fans & Ciminis have their hair on fire about a lump dead cap hit two years later (particularly as that'll probably coincide with a sizable dead cap hit for Rodgers, too). Even still, the total hits and total years here under the Eagles contract would be unchanged: most of 2024 and all of 2025 for $18MM, so it'd be future-proofing the optics with no other benefit.
