Jets-Pats biggest point spread in 3 years

i remember starting a thread about that 26.5 point spread in the Jag/Broncos game.  Jets may not score this week for real.

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/nfl-week-16-early-odds-jets-Cheaters-opens-as-largest-point-spread-in-three-years/

If the  Cheaters are going to cover the spread against the Jets this week, they're going to have to turn the game into a rout because oddsmakers have hit New England with the largest point spread in three years.

The Cheaters have officially opened as a 16.5 point favorite over the Jets, which is the highest point spread of the season, and the highest point spread in any NFL game since October 2013, when the  Broncos closed as a 26.5 point favorite over the Jaguars.

This is the kind of point spread you get when Vegas keeps losing money on a team, and they keep losing money on the Cheaters.

New England is 11-3 against the spread this year, making them the safest NFL bet of 2016. Of course, the ugliness of the Jets season also plays into the large point spread. Their starting quarterback ( Bryce Petty) is banged up and their backup quarterback (Ryan Fitzpatrick) throws interceptions like it's his job.

Betting a spread this big is never easy, however, history seems to favor the underdog. According  to Pro Football Reference, in the past 20 instances where a team has been favored by 16 or more points, the underdog has gone 14-5-1 against the spread.

The Jaguars of 2013 were one of the teams that ended up covering. As a 26.5 point underdog, the Jags ended up losing by "just" 16 (35-19).

The Jets-Cheaters game will mark the ninth time in the Brady-Belichick era that the Cheaters have been favored by 16 or more points. In those nine games, the Cheaters are 9-0 straight-up, but just 3-6 against the spread.

If there is one sure bet here, it's betting on the Cheaters to win. Since 1990, there have been 59 teams that have been favored by 16 or more points and those teams have gone 56-3 straight-up. The last time a team lost in this scenario came in 1995 when the 17-point underdog  Redskins beat the Cowboys 24-17.

If you take out the Cheaters game, the next biggest spread in Week 16 is just 7.5 points.

The Patriots will hit that total before the 2nd quarter. The Pats defense alone will outscore the Jets offense.

We lost by 20 to Matt Moore at home, 16.5? This game wont be that close.

the punt block scoop TD was a fluke source of points.

This same team pretty much lost to the Pats by 5 at home, maybe they lose by 8 or 14 but it's a long road to hoe

put it another way if somehow the Jets go up 3-0 or 7-0 on their first drive that cover is never getting there.

16.5?  Not nearly enough.

When I opened this thread I was thinking the exact same thing. I know they played close in their last meeting, but this team has nothing left in the tank and nothing to play for. The only salvation is that the offense rallies around Petty because the kid is exciting.

Can't wait to watch Revis play at 70pct (not due to injury, just due to desire) and watch Mo Wilk get sandwich blocked by tight ends.

The thing about the Pats is they never stop. They will always run up the score, like it's college.

That being said 17 points in a divisional matchup is a ton in the NFL.

Actually it is one of the reasons to win. They just play their offense, they never go into "protect the lead mode". I can't criticize them for it. All teams should do it.

Bryce is winning this game for us if he plays

Dude, don't say 'hoe' - now Sheldon can't focus...

Yeah, no way NE can rip off 24 straight points or anything. 7-0 and this baby is covered!

Stop it.  You know Belicheat is a gentle soul who has a soft spot for the Jets.  I'm sure the Friar Tuck lookalike will be sympathetic to our plight.

They are going to kill us. Brady will try and embarrass us. The D showed their soft side when they didn't pop him when they could last time. Brady will show no mercy in kind.
