I'm keeping up just fine. You quoted Mogglez about a compensatory pick. Be clearer on your posts.

Pretty clear from here.   I said draft pick.  Not a compensatory pick.  Could be used somewhere else.  Was an additional point, adding to Mogglez fine post.

Well aside from being unclear, they shouldn't not draft a guard because of this contract. Carpenter will be a FA eventually and they should still have depth. Not drafting players because they have other players at that position is how the Jets came to have one of the worst rosters in the NFL. They'll want a capable guard replacement so they don't have to overpay Winters on a third contract when he'll be declining. But that's what the Jets love to do so who knows.

See the bigger picture.

He's a good player, a spot that's hard to fill. He's ours, and now he's not leaving for at least two years. The jets need stability along the line with young good home grown talent.  That's the big picture .

That's not the big picture at all. And right guard is probably the least important position on the offensive line. Hard to fill? Please.

There isn't the same need to draft a guard this year as there might have been if Winters walked and they could find a capable replacement.  Has nothing to do with replacing Winters in 4 years.

Were you not the person who was saying that Winters should have been signed two years ago to this contract?  I'm confused.

TOP of the MARKET ALL-PRO RGs like Yanda, Kyle Long & Decastro are ALL LOCKED UP  through the 20's and earn $7.9M AND NORTH PER YEAR

For all the twits b!tching about the Winters re-signing, look at the contract numbers and REALIZE that it's a SMART move in terms of PRE-EMPTING the FA market for RGs & it's POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT for our YOUNGER Jets players to see how The Jets take care of their own IF they improve with time. AND THE SALARY CAP KEEPS GOING UP EVERY YEAR!!!

Considering the TOP RGs are ALL locked up through 2020-2022 w/a $10M/year avg. salary, resigning #67 CLEARLY shows that the Jets were better off signing him NOW compared to when he would have been a TOP RG on the market when compared to:

TJ Lang coming OFF a Pro BOWL year? he'd sign a reasonable  contract UNDER $10M/year? Chance Warmack the ALREADY OVERPAID Bust? Grey beard Evan Mathis? The rest of the truly FA viable options SUCK, are old, or Suck AND are too old.

Winters has arrived and the Jets FO was SMART - unlike you idiots bashing the move ( like Charles el loco Cuarenta) - in locking up the most promising - 25 year old and improving every year - RG on the /17 FA market; only caveat is the injury history of TWICE being IRed for a knee and shoulder in 4 years of playing 80% of  a full season.  And for the whiners saying he should have been re-signed BEFORE the '16 season are FULL OF THEMSELVES. No one would be willing to sign him to an extension until he proved consistent and he DID do that this year on an abysmal OLine.

Carl, starting quality lineman are sparse right now league wide. Please take a look around and you will see how valuable guys like winters have become. I'm not saying he's worth the money, but supply and demand my friend.

Per Jason's site, he'd be like the 5th highest RG.  By the time the contract is over, he'll probably be in the middle of the pack.  If you're cool with bringing him back, your talking about what, the difference of 2M per year out of 168M?  The number isn't that serious.

Should just give all 53 players and extra 2 million a year. That's only 106 million. Leaves plenty to...oh...wait...nm

The O line obviously needed serious upgrade.  We just locked down one position at a definitive "not upgraded/average at best".

Lets hope we do better elsewhere on the line.

The only thing better than paying $8mm per for a guard is paying $8mm per for a guard somebody else drafted. GET IT DONE BIG MACC

Lol. You guys. There's no pick now. You can't use a compensatory pick on someone else when you don't get awarded it. Come on.

Yeah. Well aware of that. Point was that you would have to use a draft pick on a replacement if you let him sign elsewhere and whether or not you use the compensatory pick you would have been awarded, you have to use a pick to clear a hole you made for yourself.  All of that could have been avoided if they just signed him and used the draft picks on other needs, which they did and will do.

Well Winters is young with potential to get better, would have been the best Guard on the FA market by far, and this year's draft seriously sucks when it comes to O-Linemen...so actually yeah, this is the best we could have done.  Our biggest O-Line concerns were the tackle spots and if Shell picks up where he left off, we're only another Tackle a way from being in good shape.  Before the line got decimated by injuries, they weren't playing horrible.  When Mangold, Clady, and Winters all went down in a short span of time, that's when it all went to hell.

Again, going into last year I wasn't the biggest fan of the guy, but he played exceptional this season.

How do you BEGIN to seriously upgrade an OLine? Does cohesion, continuity, veteran leadership factor in at all when people speak of the elite OLines around the league?

Because The Winters re-signing is the beginning of this overhaul and a key aspect to achieve what you and so many others are crying for.

I already posted what the '17 FA market was going to be for STARTING RGs in the NFL and, at 25, he was more likely to be rewarded by another team as a FA despite what the omniscient JN lamenters opine. It's also ONE LESS Draft pick allotted in replacing a current starter in a draft where we may have upto 7 or 8 STARTING positions that need to be filled.

Winters is young and has shown improvement. Assuming, and the FO SHOULD do it, Mangold is cut, Winters would be the Elder and LONGEST Tenured OLine starter for the Jets. Aside from Carpenter who arrived in 2015, the Jets are facing the possibility that there may be 3 NEW starters for the OLine in 2017. Retaining Winters is KEY to laying a foundation and VETERAN STARTING experience to what will be a VERY GREEN OLine in terms of unit cohesion and NOT getting whoever the 2017 QB is KILLED by opposing defenses.

I balked at the initial number as well for a CONVERTED OT from Kent St. who was a NIGHTMARE starting as a rookie in 2013. Well, it's 2017 and in those four years he's shown to yield AT LEAST 1 holding penalty or Unsportsmanlike Conduct penalty per game, but he also brings a mean streak and attitude, that I believe, is necessary for an OLine to have. He's NOT the BEST RG and his numbers are commensurate of an ascending young player who is SERVICEABLE at his position and who's salary will moreso than not, will be mid-range within 2-3 years as the salary cap continue to rise and force higher, and sometimes unmerited, salaries for players.

I wanted jets to draft DeCastro. It's what we should have done. He was a sure thing smart, strong, technique, work ethic. But of course Rex had to demand we waste pick on Coples ?

makes no sense at all and reeks of panic.   add winters to the Fitz and Wilkerson contracts and you have a pattern of panic moves.

Winters made close to 1.9 this last year of his contract. He's paid his dues and should get a good contract but 4 years at 8 M per? Are you kidding me? Top guards in  NFL... Osemele 11.7 mill,  Long 10 mill, Lupati 8 mill, all the way down to Carpenter (ranked 20th) at 4.7 . Yet Mac overpays Winters at close to 8 mill per year for 4 years for a player #1)  coming off a rather serious injury and #2) a player who really is nothing more than an average performer  at this position.  Yes he has improved over the course of his time BUT in essence all that really illustrates in his case is how bad he was.  Top 10 guards make 7 mill and above. 8 mill per for Winters places him in the elite class of guards.  No way Jose. SMH.

This was a STUPID signing at this price. STUPID. Winters gets run over more than the monks in Grand Theft Auto. He's nothing more than an average middle of the pack guard. 8 Mill per for 4 years is an absurdity.

GOURANGA!

If he'd hit FA and anyone else signed him to $8m/yr you'd all be laughing at how ridiculous that was.

This is a player that should have been locked up a year ago if they had any idea they wanted to keep him long term. Since his play wasn't night & day different from 2015-2016, it shows he did have this interest, and this lack of foresight again shows his incompetence. There's a 0% chance he'd have cost anywhere near $8m per in January of 2016.

Some of you are so in love with anything Maccagnan does you will applaud any move he makes. A day ago exactly nobody here thought Winters was one of the league's best guards or worth more than half what he just got.

Come back in 3 years, if you're still around, when the Salary Cap has exponentially increased, as it has in the past and will continue to do so in the future, and see if Winters' salary is STILL GROSSLY overcompensating him when compared to the league average for starting Guards AT THAT future time.

It'll turn out to be a bargain if he continues to improve and WORST CASE scenario - if Mac and Davidson's record are ANY indication - Jets probably have an out after 2 years if Winters doesn't validate the salary.

Time will tell, but it's a SMART move for beating the market to what will be an inflated bunch of FA contracts for QUALITY VETERAN OLine with such few available and a dearth of OLine talent in the '17 draft.

And apparently YOU ARE THE ONLY ONE who believes and was clamoring for the Jets to have signed Mo and Winters an off season before they actually did.  Good GRIEF you are SO full of yourself with IMPECCABLE 20/20 hindsight.

Idzik's not a psychic doctor, ok

Idzik is also the guy who traded Revis for the Bucs #9 pick which was used to draft Dee Milliner. It would've been the #7 pick in the 2014 draft if he would've just taken the Bucs original offer, which would have gotten us either Mike Evans or most likely Odell Beckham Jr. seeing as how we wanted to trade up for him. Also, trading Revis is what lead him to landing on the Patriots helping them win a superbowl. **** Idzick.
