Do you know for sure what kind of elephants Hannibal used to cross the Alps.  Elephants that you can train are the short eared ones like from India.  The long eared African ones are wild and not trainable aren't they.  Let me know if you can.

Excellent!  I felt he was not a perfect fit for us (more of a 3-4 outside linebacker).  But he does have edge potential and I LOVE his name.  Hamilcar was a great Carthaginian general.  His folks have a sense of history.

Yeboah = Antonio Gates. He just glides on the field. I think hes better than Pitts.  He might also be better than Moore. That kid is a yac specialist.

You need to stop putting vodka in those cookies.

Perhaps he means Isaiah Dunn.  He is a corner from Oregon State who was eligible for this draft.  It does not make sense though since Ourlads did not give him a draftable grade.

I figured it had to be a mistake.  After all, did the Jets really need "moore" defensive backs?

via SI:

Overview:

Contributing in the Beavers secondary for four seasons, Dunn is comfortable and patient in zone coverage, showing his experience in deep thirds or quarters. His feet are clean allowing him to back-pedal and move smoothly in space. A patient run defender, he gets the job done when he has to, showing physicality and hand usage to shed and the ability to wrap up when meeting ball-carriers. His athleticism is below average, preventing him from breaking on routes aggressively and making him susceptible to getting beat deep by fast wideouts. His transitions are too slow to limit underneath yardage from off coverage. When tasked with man-coverage assignments, Dunn lacks the close-quarter quickness required to play tight coverage. He is unable to play the hands of the receiver with his head turned. Dunn could be seen as a safety by some teams and will have a hard time making a roster unless he can demonstrate that he is a special-teams contributor.

The common thread in most of the day 3 DB's. These guys know what they want.

So, here is where I think we are at as of this AM.  Not a bad group:

  1. Hamilcar Rashed Jr. EDGE, Oregon State
  2. Teton Saltes, OL, New Mexico
  3. Kenny Yeboah, TE, Mississippi
  4. Milo Eifler, LB, Illinois
  5. Michael Dwumfor, DL, Rutgers
  6. Tristen Hoge, OL, BYU
  7. Brendon White, S, Rutgers
  8. Isaiah Dunn, CB, Oregon State
  9. Jordyn Peters, S, Auburn
  10. Chris Naggar, K, SMU
  11. Parker Ferguson, OL, Air Force

Big departure from the Macc and Idzik days where I’d scarcely recognize a single name

I am not sure, but I think the only UDFA from the Macc years to stick was Kyle Phillips.  Not a bad player.  Last year we got contributions from Guidry, Jackson, Cager, Huff.

On the other hand, these guys got more PT than some of our day 3 picks from 2020.

Robby was probably the most prolific UDFA of recent memory

Just have a feeling because of how flat out crazy this whole year was that 3-4 of these guys have a real chance to stick. And it will probably be a league wide thing. Also, out last pick, Marshall, sounds like a keeper. Read a bit about him from some sources, and lots of guys like him.

Good point.  How quickly I seemed to forget him.  Robby and Snacks have been our two best UDFA signings of the last decade.  Before that I woud probably have to go back to Brandon Moore for a real impact guy.

Jets coaches over the years have been piss poor teachers. Players arrive and never get better.

This new model drafts for traits and assumes the coaches can get the best out of the players. Moneyball baby!

I was thinking about Marshall in the 7th round in our mock.  Just based on the RAS score -- I think he is the 2nd highest ranked DL in the last 20+ years.  , Given the scores of the I figured someone would take a shot at him.  But instead I went with a potential ST stud in Avery Williams who was drafted in the 5th so I made the right choice.

Pretty clear what Saleh/JD are looking for out of the defense.  Athleticism and speed.  Hopefully some of them can play football too.

While refreshing to see the Jets prioritize athleticism in their CBs, I’m curious about what Saleh doesn’t like about the two young guys who are here in Austin and Hall, who seem pretty athletic. This was a lot of resources thrown at one position group, IMO. I went back and looked at the box score the Niners-Jets game when Saleh was the DC there, and was reminded that the Niners ran up and down the field on the Jets, and Jordan Reid caught two TDs in the middle of the field. Strange.

Who said he doesn't like them? Adding players to a pool of approximately 10 DBacks is adding to the competition and overall depth.

I did not take it as a knock on Austin and Hall at all.  Neither guy has been around long enough, or is accomplished enough to be penciled in as a starter in April.  I think they are both promising CBs who can be very good in our system.  But neither has earned the right to claim the starting spot without competition.

CB is probably the most boom or bust position on the team.  Will be interesting to see how the secondary shakes out in August/Sept.

I also think Saleh is looking for fast, athletic guys who are good tacklers that can play on specials as well. He probably watched the tape and saw Mann punt a ball like 55 yards, only to have the coverage be so piss poor that the return was like 20+yards. One of the first FA's we signed was the gunner from the Saints, and I honestly think these guys that were just picked are gonna both compete for spots in the secondary, but more importantly impact specials.

I could be wrong but there is maybe one actual outside corner in that draft class which seems more like zero resources. I can't speak for Saleh but what I don't like about Austin and Hall is that they are not good.

That was macs best feature as a gm, his udfa, then again when you draft that bad these other dudes get a chance.  Mac got Robbie anderson as well no?

Well it may not be a 'knock' on the existing guys but they had better be ready to adapt to fit the scheme, these picks are really scheme specific so if these dudes do not 'fit' they are in trouble.

This also highlights that for the vast majority of players in the NFL you better be working hard to get better every year or you are replaced.  Other than the stars there is no nice comfortable thought that 'I made the team last year I am safe.'  (Unless todd bowles is your coach).

I think Saleh probably likes Hall, Hall is much better in zone than he is press man IMO.   Hall could show some decent improvement in this defense as it matches his skill set better than the Greg Williams one did.
