Randall Cobb and Family are lucky to be alive(House Fire)

Wide receiver Randall Cobb and his family escaped a fire at their Nashville, Tennessee, home this week, with his wife, Aiyda, posting, "we are lucky to be alive."

Aiyda Cobb posted to her Instagram story this week that a Tesla charger "caught fire in the garage late last night and quickly spread" through their home.

"We got out of the house with nothing but the clothes on our back and no shoes on our feet," she wrote.

The Cobbs have three young sons.

Randall Cobb, in a joint statement posted to Instagramwith his wife Wednesday, wrote that he was able to go backrescue the family's dog, Louie.

Cobb thanked the Nashville Fire Department "for their swift action."

"I can't get the image of the brave firefighter getting into position out of my head; he didn't even have water to shoot yet. I truly thought the cars were going to explode and that we would lose him to this tragedy. He is a true hero," Cobb wrote. "Unfortunately we don't know how much, if anything, will be salvageable, but this has been a reminder that nothing is more important than the health of our family.

"We are grateful for our incredible community in Nashville, and the support from our close friends that have given us a temporary roof over our heads and shoulders to lean on."

The post to Instagram includes videos showing burned cars and extensive fire damage to the garage.

Cobb, 33, played last season for the New York Jets and is a free agent. He played 10 of his first 12 seasons with the Green Bay Packers and ranks fifth in franchise history with 532 receptions, 10th in touchdown receptions (47) and 11th in receiving yards (6,316).

Scary stuff.   Glad they got out in good order.  Many props for the respect he gave to the firefighters.  My neighbor is a paid professional firefighter that is two years away from retirement.  Heard many hair raising accounts.  Those guys have iron balls.  They will even risk it all to save a family pet.

I used to race remote control cars and stored all of the batteries in fireproof containers. It has always amazed me that people put these batteries 100x those for RC and have no real protection from them starting fires. At least none that I’m aware of.

Fires are scary, glad his family made it out safely and he acknowledged the hero’s. Well done. Nashville is a great place to live, they will have lots of support I’m sure.

The allegation is the charger started the fire - or more correctly, that the fire started at the wall charger - not a car battery spontaneously combusting. 

Wonder if it was hardwired or if it used a plug. My understanding is the former would be safer (less chance of sparks from a plug that eventually pulled loose). Safer if the correct gauge wires were used & all code was followed. Cobb can certainly afford to have any electrical contracting job done right, but I know from experience (as do many/most of us) that paying for the right job doesn't always guarantee getting the right job. Eventually the fire marshal will figure it out, presumably, whether it's faulty or loose wiring or just a faulty charger.

The most important thing is they're ok, other than the scare. Luckily, the fire seems to have been contained in the garage. Whatever they may have lost - even if they're items stored in the garage that had some emotional attachments - is just stuff.

My wife's family house on LI burned down when she was 14. Probably how I managed to out kick my coverage....

 

 

LI batteries are no joke, FDNY did a test where they fully submerged a rechargeable battery bank and when they pulled it out of the water it autoignited. 

 

I would never own an EV or any other high energy LI battery equipment. Hell, I don't even keep propane tanks or a gas can in my garage.

Went to FSFC in Ocala back in 01. 

 

Firefighter/Paramedic/USAR TRT/HazMat Tech/EFO/Fire, Arson, and Explosions Investigator and a bunch of other stuff up until 14 months ago. Retired as an Ops Captain and Assistant Fire Marshal of West Palm Beach last March. Currently living the dream working as a Contracted Fire Protection Specialist/Code Administrator for City of Palm Bay (near Cape Canaveral). 

 

I miss the guys but not the job tbh.

Very happy Cobb and his family are okay.  I know we're not allowed to talk politics but I hate that EVs are being pushed on the population.  Again though, I'm glad Cobb and his family are safe.

That's crazy but not surprising.  I've read many bad things about EVs.  They have to be a nightmare for firefighters.

Given the general lack of craftsmanship in Central TN due to the overwhelming push to build houses quicker than a Pez dispenser.  I wonder who installed it.  I am guessing the house was retrofitted with a charging station.

They've been trying to warn residents for years about them and people just don't want to listen (shocking). Huge fire in Brooklyn just yesterday from an ebike.

Been hearing about e bikes starting fires all over the city. It's only a matter of time before our fake commissioner gets her panties in a knot and does something about it. In the meantime it's best to keep those pieces of junk outside.

It's not isolated to Tennessee... construction practices are just bad everywhere right now. There's a massive shortage of skilled tradesmen nationwide.

If I had a kid that was college age, my advice would be to skip college and go apprentice as an electrician or a plumber.

AI or a college Grad won't be installing a water main, framing a building, or doing plumbing work any time soon... the Fire Sprinkler, Fire Alarm and Underground install companies all over are desperate for people. All good Jobs that pay well. All hiring at competitive wages with room to advance.

 

I met a 20 year old kid that did a BDA install (a VERY complex system). Hard working and smart. BDA's are UL listed systems and once he gets a few more under his belt, he'll get certified.

 

He'll own his own Fire Alarm installation company by 30, have a few field guys working for him, and be actually reasonably wealthy by 40 if he keeps it up.

no no Spermy sparks from a plug is not real. Nor would a connector pop loose.

Either the system was jerry rigged ( possible no matter how wealthy a guy is) or it was a “pro” install that used a lesser gauge wire or, most likely, the charger failed and heated up and caught fire for some reason

Possibly but just like me your wife my may have decided she would like to look petite and pretty in every family picture she takes. Standing next to a big gorrilla  tends to do that.

Read up on all this.  Electric cars are the future, for now unless they can come up with something else.  Gas engines are being phased out. They are burning out the ozone.  Gas engines have been around for what, 140 years. Thats all it took to create a sderious concern to the atmosphere.  When Covid hit, NO ONE was driving. It was remarkable how the air cleared up in just the short time cars werent polutting the air.  Nothings perfect, there are positvies and negatives to everything but there has to be adjustments made to preserve life on this planet.
