This is applicable to Richardson.  We're not going to be able to afford him.  Macc should move him now before getting painted into a corner like he did with Wilkerson.  Sheldon's value in a trade will never be higher...

Mac painted himself into the corner he's in.

It's a compensatory 3rd. The "compensatory" part is that if Collins doesn't re-sign with the Browns after the season the Patriots have to give the Browns a 3rd round pick in 2018. Which means they'll get that 3rd plus whatever comp pick they'd get for losing him. I don't think the Browns have any intention of re-signing him. Basically they're trading their 3rd in 2017 for either two 3rd's or a 3rd and a 4th in 2018. Smart move. Especially bc they have two 1st and 2nd round picks in 2017 so the loss of the 3rd means very little.

That third round pick is almost a second round pick-very top of 3rd round, given its the Browns.  A comp pick is at the end of the round, or almost a 4th round pick.

The Jets, on the other hand, paid valuable cap space for Jarvis Jenkins who not only does not play, but likely cost them their Damon Harrison comp pick.

All the corners he's in. This is the most poorly constructed roster since the Eddy Curry Knicks and half the board wants to bury their faces in his butt and huff his farts.

lol, you're rolling today... I dig.

I still disagree with that comp system. They should have a system like MLB has. Where each FA is assigned a grade and only like to likes get canceled out

No idea why the Browns are bothering with this. But it is the Browns so my guess is that he's got a bunch of tapeworms.

This is actually a really good point.  I thought Demario was actually playing decently.  By the time the Browns are any good, Collins will be done.

You trade the first pick in the 3rd round for what amounts to a ILB in their 5th year next year?  Yikes.

It's a comp pick, so it's at the end of the round.

The Jenkins signing was so stupid.   So many people called it, but not our GM

Having a hall of fame Qb can let you do just about anything you want and it will look like genius.  Any other teams giving up the quality of players the pats have let go on the cheap the last few years would be killed.  If you have a hof Qb you can be as ballsy as you want.

having the opponents plays ahead of time also helps

Its a great trade for the Browns.  They have cap room, they are looking for youth and performance.  They get one of the 5-10 best lbers in the league and they will likely be able to resign him during the season, and they probably don't lose much even if he departs as they will get back a 3rd round comp in 2018.

So they lose the difference in value between a 3rd round comp pick in 2017 and a 3rd round comp pick in 2018 if he walks, or alternatively gain a great young player.

Meanwhile it makes sense for the Patriots, who get some value back in what would almost assuredly have been a lost contract, as well as cap flexibility for their big FA resigning spree.

Typical BB but I guess they knew they weren't going to be able to sign him. Plus in a way they've been phasing him out. He had only about 2/3 of his usual snaps vs the Bills. They must have felt positive they could replace him and get some productivity from guys on the roster currently. You have to be pretty good to get paid by NEP. They paid Devin McCourty last year only because they felt he was integral to their defense and the only guy they trusted to call D signals. They paid him a real lot for a safety (28.5 guaranteed). As for the Browns with Paul Depdesta in the FO you know they ran the guy through a computer and I guess his stats passed the geek test. And if they don't sign him won't they get a comp pick in return.

A winless team also needs to become a not-winless team if they want to keep their jobs.  CLE may not win more than 2 games this season, but if Collins helps them get there, that might be the difference between being a GM for the Browns, and a scout for a college team next year.

An 0-8 team giving any pick for an 8 game rental is crazy! The Browns are better off loosing every game at this point and securing the #1 pick rather than winning one or two and possibly loosing #1 slot to 9ers or Bears.

Are  any of the La La Land residents  going to apologize for calling me nuts for saying there is no way Sheldumn would fetch a 1st?!?!  And that a 2nd would be really good, or a 3rd acceptable?

Jamie Collins just drew a conditional 3rd...

The rules were a lot different then.  Can you imagine the numbers those two would have put up playing in todays pass happy NFL? Plus let's remember to include John Jefferson, Chet Forte out of the backfield, plus another receiver who' name escapes me.   They might have been the first team to average 40 points plus, a game.

Charlie Joiner was the other great WR ... Believe Chuck Muncie of the taped glasses was tearing it up for them At RB back then too!

Believe this is their GM's 1st year ... Hope he gets longterm deal worked out ... Guess the Franchise Tag leverage over a player who hasnt gotten the giant payment yet due to rookie deals ... Along with wanting to avoid injury risk gives Cleveland a good chance to longterm it!

I hope the Jets pursue Collins as a FA

Terrible idea.  There should be no big name, high priced free agents in a rebuild.  Dump salary, and draft.  That's it.  Free agency is only for bargain basement shopping for cheap veterans to fill out the roster.  Like a versatile backup O-Lineman.   Or rotational defensive players.

This franchise needs to build for 2020 or 2021.

Yeah, pass on the whole rebuild thing. Find a QB, draft depth, and land studs whenever they come around.

That's missed the last two games and still leads the team in tackles. Better find a new target.

Good at making tackles 10 yards don the field, he made zero difference in the thing he was supposed to , that being cover all the RBs and TES killing us in the short passing game.  Hey he has speed and has played all right for a rookie but drafting and ILB at 20 unless he is luke kuechlyesque is iffy.
