The Jets could start free agency close to 50 million under the cap

Someone check my math here but I see:

Cap #     167,371,487

Under the cap by…       26,278,320
Brandon Marshall         7,500,000
Marcus Gilchrist         4,625,000
Eric Decker         5,750,000
Khiry Robinson             946,875

Under the cap by…       45,100,195

Buster Skrine         3,500,000

Buster is the only one I am not sure is getting cut. But if they cut him they are 48 million under the cap. Good job Macc making sure the contracts in the past are easy to get out of. Sure there is some dead money but at least they have flexibility.

Yep, and hopefully soon after that, even more, after we trade Sheldon Richardson and Calvin Pryor.

I don't think there is any cap savings for Pryor. Richardson, yes he saves 3.5mm with 5mm in dead money though.

At this pace...we may go 5 and 11.   Oh wait....I'm confusing what year it is.

all aboard the pony express to the bottom.  I'm actually behind this. Blow it up captain.

There's a ton of free agent talent out there for the taking. We are going to be active. I expect 2 marquee FAs... probably a CB and LB.

You have quickly moved to the top of my short-sighted "STB" dunce list.

You just can't seem to wrap your brain around what they're doing. The Jets will not be active.  Maybe a QB.  Maybe...

Otherwise, late bargain shopping.

I do like your avatar though.

I don't mind paying for a young (eg 25 and under) player who is a stud, and has the ability to be a long time Jet, with the right attitude.  Frontload the contract, so that he's cheap later in his career and there you have it.

It's clear we won't get many of those types of players before we run out of cap room though (think maybe 2 or 3) and our team will still be terrible, but at least there will be some youth.

What would be absolutely terrible, is if we start shelving out big money for older players (like Revis in 2015).  The only veterans we want on this roster, are those we get in the bargain mill, that have the right attitudes (like Harris) and can mentor the younger players.

Yeah, I don't know what you think is short-sighted about signing 25-26 year old free agents to fill holes that we have... but I don't think that is short sighted. Sorry to burst your bubble, but the Jets are not tanking for 5 years. We are be cutting the dead weight and rebuilding. Those holes will be filled through both FA and the draft. To think that they are not going to be active is ridiculous.

The true test of this all.....meaning are we rebuilding correctly is how much of this he spends or at least makes easy to cut into next year.

good points. 35 million in salary cap will maybe get 4 top free agents. the problem there is that the vets they bring in will not necessarily be good for a total rebuild. i can see them going for another competitive rebuild but this time with a better qb.

Zero dead money for trading Sheldon.  Saves them $8 million.

35-50 million goes quickly, when you lack a LT, a QB, a CB1 a S1, a WR1 and a pass rush specialist.  Those are the marquee positions we have to fill...  An average NFL starter alone at QB is ~18million per year, and thats NOT the ones you get in free agency (who will demand a higher price).

Average starting LT ~ 8 million (again look higher for what you get in FA).

Average starting pass rusher ~ 8 million

Average starting CB 1 ~ 9 million.

So being wildly optimistic that you pay average league wide salaries in FA, and just getting your average starting caliber player at those 4 positions, you are looking at 43 million dollars in cap space.

I must have read Jason's site wrong earlier. Or it was updated. Because damn that is a big cap savings with no dead money.

Sheldon is GONE.

Well the thing is, when you go 5 and 11 it is kind of an easy decision. The old we finished last with you, we can finish last without you kind of thing.

I am just glad that we aren't terrible and in cap hell. That is normally the case.

This is the year to tank.  Browns style.   I am not a fan of "fraud agency," but some spending can be OK when 2 or 3 of the franchise cornerstones are already in place.

the Jets are a team whose only goal should be 2-14 for 2017.

He hasn't done enough to warrant an extension yet :)

Lol.

I expect a fool like Maccagnan to wait, since he's never extended anybody with a year left under contract or team control, and he then either pays millions more per year than he had to (e.g. Winters), or he loses the player outright because he's too expensive after waiting (e.g. Harrison).

Shouldn't the goal to be to win the Super Bowl with all first year players?
