Patriots Releasing Stephon Gilmore(Traded to Panthers)

Bill Belichick is pretty damned smart figuring out when a player is no longer a good cost vs reward proposition.  Other than Brady that is.  Either damaged goods or wants too much money or skills declining or simply that he has someone else who is almost as good or better for much less money.  He pretty much always seems to get this stuff right.

Much of the league has made missteps assuming they can root for (and find) treasure in the Patriots discard pile.

Pass

Patsies are #4 against the pass without Gilmore, who wants a ton more money. They've seen they are fine without him. He's also a potential injury risk ongoing.

It ain't broke, so don't pay a ton of money to fix it. Makes perfect sense.

My first reaction is obviously "sign this beast" but I have to think there's more to this for the Pats to just release him. Something is going on. Maybe he just wants to go play with Brady in Tampa.

Or maybe Bill’s failed spending spree and losing record without Brady is starting to catch up to him

They couldn't  agree on a contract. It isn't  so eyebrow raising. The Pats are rebuilding for the next 2 or 3 seasons.

They are very hard up against the cap - they would have had to cut others to resign him. Hope Belicheat enjoys all those expensive TE's he signed in the off-season. He better hope no one gets hurt.

This is a move that anyone else in the league would just get KILLED by the talking nfl media heads but because it is Bellichik it will be a smart move.

For every good 'get rid of him too early' move by the pats there has been a terrible one.  Chandler Jones for example.

Agreed, Belichick knows his team isn't going anywhere.  So he cut bait

Nah. J.C. Jackson is a number 1 corner and they aren't a contender this year. No reason not to do this

The “more” is the fact that he wants lots more money.

I don’t see the Jets moving on this.  They’re not a $20 million CB away from competing.

And this scheme doesn't invest heavily in CB's to begin with.  Paying Gilmore heavily to primarily be a zone corner would be a poor allocation of resources.
