With the Vikings still having a TO, I'm sure voluntarily giving up the ball and making it a 2-point game was not what they were looking to do. Good money bet that, in their heads, they figured they could try to avoid the safety, at worst if it didn't work it's the same as if they voluntarily took the safety.... of course it turned out far worse than that.
