Larz Posted January 15, 2023 Author Share Posted January 15, 2023 Kevin Patullo enters his second year as the Philadelphia Eagles' passing game coordinator after joining the team during the 2021 offseason. With the Eagles in 2021, Patullo assisted a passing attack that finished sixth in the league in receiving average (11.7) and yards after the catch per reception (5.7). He also helped develop Jalen Hurts, a first-time starter who became just the eighth quarterback in NFL history to register 3,000 passing yards (3,144) and 750 rushing yards (784) in a season. In addition, wide receiver DeVonta Smith established a franchise rookie record for receiving yards (916), while Dallas Goedert ranked first among the league's tight ends in receiving first-down percentage (75.0 pct.) and fifth in yards (830). Caley also coached fullbacks from 2017 through 2021. In Caley's first season as tight ends coach in 2017, Rob Gronkowski earned his fifth career Pro Bowl invitation, was named to the Associated Press All-Pro: First Team and led all tight ends in receiving yards (1,084) and yards per reception (15.7). That same season, he also coached fullback James Develin to his first career Pro Bowl. Prior to joining the Patriots, Caley spent 10 years coaching in the college ranks. He entered the NFL having coached mainly on the defensive side of the ball at seven different schools, with a focus on the secondary. Great communicator, great teacher, extremely knowledgeable, well versed in all facets of the game, and scheme diverse. He had a much bigger role than “TE coach” while McDaniels was there. Game plan, play design, situational offense, etc. This year he was somewhat passed over which many in NE felt was a mistake. Belichick wouldn’t commit to Caley as the OC when many felt he deserved to be the successor, so he declined signing an extension and was not asked to contribute in nearly as many roles or responsibilities as he had under McDaniels. We’ll see how his interview goes and what his feelings are on playcalling, but it sounds like the team wouldn’t be opposed to hiring him while adding a QB/PGC who could serve as primary play caller if Caley were in fact to be the hire. 4 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
carlito1171 Posted January 15, 2023 Share Posted January 15, 2023 Pattulo is a former NY Jets QB coach under Todd Bowles.....has some decent coaching experience including some college and pros...hometown guy from NJ....He's Sirianni's right hand man in Philly, and would be next in line for OC if they were to lose Steichen(even over someone like Brian Johnson). Never called plays before. I hope the interview with the Pats TE coach is just part of casting the wide net. Wouldn't want anything to do with hiring him. Too green for me. They are looking for an OC as well He’s most likely done in NE. His contract is expiring so the official interview won’t happen until next week. We requested permission as a procedural measure but won’t be necessary. Going from TE coach to OC seems strange, but it’s become a recent trend as those guys are heavily involved in all facets of pass and run game planning. Sean McVay, Arthur Smith, Ben Johnson, Shane Walderon, Greg Roman, Justin Outten, Wes Phillips, Joe Lombardi are just a few recent examples of guys who have taken similar routes. 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

If they hire a guy without QB/playcalling experience to be the OC, I would be willing to bet they add someone to the staff who has it. It’s been floated around for a while now that they will consider reassigning Rob Calabrese (possibly WRs?) and/or add a senior QBs/passing game coordinator coach who could also pitch in as playcaller.
