Schefter: Darnold Has Chance to Win QB Battle

The entire organization wants Darnold to win the job, are doing everything they can to help him win it, and ultimately the same people who want him to win the job will be deciding whether or not he does.

Personally, I think he’s the favorite to start the season, and he should be.

Wait so does he have a “very fair shot at the starting job” or is he “still a year away”?

i don’t get that part.

Still happy to see he has looked so solid. Very encouraging. Preseason is soooo important in making the decision though. I pray that he’s lights out.

I think the year away is pure Schefter editorializing to make it more dramatic if he wins, and he can say "as I reported the Jets thought Darnold was a year away, but he won the job" type of thing.

It's clear to me with the amount of reps he's getting. He's not swimming either, he's taking everything in his stride.

starting mclown is raising the white flag and telling the whole league that you have no ambition whatsoever this season.

phuk dat.

Not true.  Aaron Rodgers,  Eli Manning, Ben Rothlisberger and Phil Rivers didn’t start immediately.

Neither did Drew Brees or Tom Brady.

Ben actually did start most of his rookie year (13 starts).   He wasn't supposed to, but injuries forced him in.   The Steelers did run the ball over 62% of the time that year.  He also didn't attempt over 500 passes until his 6th year in the NFL.   Kind of crazy, Brady only threw for 4000 yards once before he turned 30.   Rivers didn't have a big season until he was 27 (5th year in the league).   Brees didn't throw for 4000 until his 6th year in the league.

I agree, but let’s face it, going 4-12 with McCown as QB he gets fired.  Going 4-12 with Darnold playing and looking promising, he keeps his job.  Not even Bowles could ignore that fact.

He should be fired for 4-12 regardless of who the qb is. He definitely gets fired if darnold plays when he is not ready. Bowles may not be a smart coach, but he is a very stubborn 1 and won’t buckle for anyone.

Who was ahead of them on the depth chart? Was it coming from serious injury Terry B and Josh McCown?

My take. Preseason will be the test. Give him every opportunity to play.  If he shows signs of remote greatness go with him. He will make his mistakes, throw interceptions, misread coverages but that will make him better. He needs to get seasoned. Like going into tours at war. Every tour makes you a better warrior. You can train forever, take notes and hold a clipboard on the sideline but nothing will make you battle ready until the real bullets are flying. This year with McCown or Bridgewater is an 8-8, 9-7 at the very best. I’d rather go 7-9 or 8-8 with Darnold and have a season under his belt for next year unless he totally blows up in preseason.

Sam is just to good, he's kicking ass in Practice. The kid got skills the other two guys can only dream of. He's Not lost, no training wheels here.

Darnold is the real deal, making proper reads, making time in the pocket. changing plays at the line. The kids 21 (just). I've never read positive reports like this before, it's Football porn. After Sanchez and Geno Smith, it's still a shock, we "may" have a Real NFL Franchise QB at last!

So not starting Petty or Hack makes someone a coward?

Lol

Right??? Some of these guys need tin foil hats. They are almost as ridiculous as the flat earthers. And not a single one of them owned up to their “stone cold guarantees” that we wouldn’t draft a QB back in April

Yup, Rodgers needed to have his entire game redone and had Favre in front of him.  Rivers was behind Brees.  Manning behind Warner.

Notice a trend?  All HOF QBs.

Warner was a has been one year rental who got benched for Eli and Ben Roethlisberger had the immortal Tommy Maddox starting in front of him in the beginning of the 2004 season.  Brees was considered a bust until 2004 when he turned it around

That phrase and comment is no longer able to be said.  It’s one thing when you have Petty and Hackenberg behind McCown, but when you have a 21 year old 3rd pick in the draft behind McCown, it sounds incompetent.

completely agree with the bolded..

bowles has to be aware any future he may or may not have as an NFL HC (here or anywhere else) is to hook his wagon to darnold ASAP..

Yeah, your post makes sense.

Kurt Warner was a has been?   He only went on to play five more seasons and was a Santonio Holmes great catch away from another SB win.  Observant of you.

Big Ben?  Who said a word about Big Ben.

Brees was a bust?  Sure he was.  What's your point that he didn't play well until 04?  That was Rivers rookie year.  He sat behind a HOF QB.  You're arguing that?
