Chip Kelly Staying or Going?

It was just one word, but to everyone in the room, it spoke volumes.

"Good."

That is the one word, one syllable explanation Eagles head coach Chip Kelly used to explain his relationship with general manager Howie Roseman this past Monday, a less than ringing endorsement considering the praise he heaped on the now fired Tom Gamble.

"He's a heck of a football guy," Kelly said. "I think Tom does an outstanding job."

Either Kelly changed his mind after just two days of evaluating his team, or the decision to fire his good friend was not his, and instead made by the combination of Roseman and owner Jeffrey Lurie.

A power move by Roseman that better have Eagles fans everywhere hoping Kelly wasn't lying when he said his relationship with the general manager is actually "good", and not the potentially divisive one it now seems to be.

If Lurie did in fact side with Roseman in the team's firing of Gamble, and went against the wishes of Kelly, it is a bold move by the owner. Kelly has seemingly had full control over what happens at the NovaCare Complex since he was hired, and he has made that very clear on multiple occasions.

The latest declaration of power from Kelly came in November, when an NJ Advance Media report cited sources that said the Eagles were souring on starting quarterback Nick Foles.

When asked about the report, Kelly was clear that he would be the one deciding what happens to Foles, and no one else in the building.

The power Kelly displayed that day, apparently, was not enough to keep Gamble. If it was Roseman's decision to push Gamble out, and Kelly was unable to stop it, that presents a shift in the perceived power dynamic between the two.

It also could lead to a very disgruntled Kelly. The relationship between Kelly and Roseman is not a good one, as detailed by this NJ Advance Media report. Here is what one NFL personnel executive from another team, who knows Gamble, had to say about the firing.

"There is no way Chip Kelly is happy about this,'' said the executive. "What the (heck) is going on there? How does Tom lose out in that battle? That place is dysfunctional.''

Dysfunctional. Not the reputation the Eagles want to build around the league.

Shortly after Kelly was first interviewed by the Eagles in 2013, CBS Sports analyst Jason LaCanfora wrote that the team was having trouble nailing down the then-Oregon head coach because of Roseman. After Kelly decided to come to the Eagles, the report was dismissed by some.

After the team's decision to fire Gamble, however, this paragraph by LaCanfora certainly reads differently:

I wish I had a dollar for every time someone told me one esteemed coach or another advised one of the Eagles' top candidates not to take the job precisely because of Roseman's presence there. Roseman isn't the general manager they should tie their wagon to. It's clear Chip Kelly wasn't leaving Oregon for anywhere unless he had a large measure of control over the organization, and owner Jeffrey Lurie has already entrusted that to Roseman.

The Eagles are still very much hitched to Kelly, but it is clear that Kelly is also now very much hitched to Roseman. It is not the "Chip Kelly" show, at least not anymore after the firing of Gamble. The two must work together, with Roseman clearly Kelly's equal, if not superior in the eyes of Lurie.

A situation the Eagles better hope doesn't leave Kelly looking around and asking if this is what he signed up for.

Chip Kelly was thought to be an amazing hire, offensive genius, walked on water...

until Mark Sanchez showed up.

as for this news if Kelly leaves it won't be to go to a tire-fire in NJ. It would be back to college.  as for the man himself he's the inverse of Rex completely awesome at offense but his defense blows chunks.

Your first point, Mark Sanchez ruining everything, is correct.

Your 2nd is not.  The Eagles had the 10th ranked defense in the NFL last year by DVOA (they also let the NFL in forced fumbles, with 24).

Their pedestrian #'s in the "standard" defensive categories are more of a reflection of the fact that they're always on the field.  Their offense had the ball an average of less than 27 minutes per game, lowest in the NFL, despite running the most plays in the NFL.

The system works because the Eagles generally do well at protecting the ball (not so when Sanchez took over) and put points on the board, thus alleviating some of the pressure away from the defense.

Herm and Mangini had new HC jobs before they finished packing up their offices with the Jets. Rex is sone back-burner candidate that Atlanta is going to talk to late next week.

Wouldn't the San Fran job be Kelly's likelier landing spot?

Great point!

one would think that

Only if the fact that Harbaugh and the Niners parted ways over a power struggle doesn't mean anything.  If the front office couldn't handle a hardass winner in Harbaugh can they handle Chip?

The eagles in general were getting by on special teams and defensive touchdowns. Something like 10 total on the year. Alot of that was luck.  It wasn't sustainable and they crumbled down the stretch. The papers all talked about how Sanchez wasn't good enough but the real story is that defense was atrocious. Couldn't stop anyone decent.

So a team gets a bunch of defensive TD's and that isn't a sign that the defense is pretty good?  The Eagles forced a turnover in every single game last year, with 7 games where they forced multiple turnovers.  Meanwhile the vaunted Jets D was last in the NFL in turnovers forced.

Team known for offense forces lots of turnovers and has strong special teams, yet in Bit's world Chip Kelly isn't a good Head Coach?  Yeah, Chip definitely needs to be our guy if he comes available.

And the Eagles had to come back from huge deficits early in the year against the Jags and Rams...two games they could have easily lost.

Whoever mentioned egos was spot on....who else lets a DeSean Jackson walk for nothing?

Put the pieces together, the Jets are interested in acquiring Kelly as HC for a draft pick.

Rumors I've been reading from articles is that Kelly and Roseman had a dispute over Tom Gamble. Kelly wanted him to stay, Roseman wanted him to go, Kelly lost this battle. Now I'm hearing Kelly might want out of his Eagles contract due to butting heads with Roseman, if Eagles owner Lurie sides with Roseman, Kelly could be sent packing for a pick and the Jets are a likely destination.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Tom Gamble brought in as GM with Kelly as HC (trading a pick for him). We heard recently that the Jets talked to Howie Roseman but not ABOUT him. When I first read this headline from PFT I rolled my eyes thinking it was another possible tampering situation where Roseman might jump ship for the Jets due to conflict with Kelly and Lurie, but this is instead looking like Roseman contacting the Jets about a possible trade for Kelly.

Which according to you would be an awesome thing, because coaches are just cheerleaders and if they're good at only one thing that's totes amazing.

P.S. Pay up.

My fear is that since Roseman already talked to Woody, Woody refused to do the deal.

Although I have no idea if Gamble was fired after that, so who knows?

When did this meeting/phone call between Roseman and The Jets office supposedly take place?
