Calvin Pace still wants to play in 2016. Will Jets have him back ? ? ?

Calvin Pace is still not done.

Pace, the longtime Jets outside linebacker, intends to return for a 14th NFL season in 2016 even though he will turn 36 in October, a person familiar with the situation told NJ Advance Media at the NFL Combine on Thursday.

That person spoke on condition of anonymity.

Pace had said at the end of the 2015 he would like to keep playing, and that he'd like to remain a Jet. The person with knowledge of the situation said Pace had not changed his mind since the season ended by deciding to retire.Pace has been a mainstay in Florham Park since 2008,when he left the Cardinals to sign a free-agent deal with the Jets.

He can become an unrestricted free agent in two weeks, but his representatives are scheduled to talk to the Jets at some point this week about possibly staying on. (General manager Mike Maccagnan said Wednesday the Jets would meet with the agents for all of their pending free agents here in Indianapolis.)

Whether the Jets want Pace back—at terms agreeable to both parties—remains to be seen.

The Jets have all but announced their intention to get younger and faster, particularly on the defensive edge. It's conceivable that Pace could return at a low price in a situational role. The Jets' hope is that Lorenzo Mauldin, a 2015 third-round pick, can develop into an every-down player on the edge. They also ought to have Mike Catapano—another situational rusher—back from a foot injury. But edge rusher also figures to be a need they will address in the draft, though nothing is ever certain with the draft.

The Jets have added the CFL player, there is that Penn State guy from last year, and they will draft hopefully at leaset one OLB.  Maybe Catapano can play (is he DE or OLB?).

One of these players need to beat out Calvin Pace.  if none of them are better than he, that if the Jets want to be the best team that they can be, he should be on the team.

The problem is you have to have somebody to replace him and the OLB spot has been fairly neglected until Mauldin.

Pace has never beat an OT straight up for a sack. Even when he had 10, they were all gimmes.  That said, he's been solid and unspectacular.

Vet min with no guaranteed $.

The funny thing is the guy apparently WANTS to keep playing despite how much he hates training camp.

It'll be sad to see him go for the reason that he's the last link of the most fun 48 hours in Jets free agency history.  When we got Calvin Pace, Kris Jenkins, and Alan Faneca ....the Tanny days had some fun ups.

Why does everyone think this is a bad idea?  The guy wants to come back, and he could be had for basically nothing.  He won't be starting, and could be a spot player.  Perfect fit for this year as a spare OLB.

tough to justify a spare OLB who can't play special teams.  I like what Pace gave this team for years but his lateral, sideline-to-sideline movement is too slow now for where Bowles wants the Jets D to be.  Time to move on from Pace I say, and get younger and faster at that position.

It has to be for vet minimum salary plus as a backup not as a starter

Because Bowles will put him on the field too much and he has no value on special teams because he's too slow. He won't be used only sparingly.

I like the guy and I'd bring him back. At least as a situational player. But that's usually what they end up doing and he ends up starting. If he feels healthy enough to play he can make a contribution.

We cannot waste roster spots  on feel good stories the guy is old and slow, thanks for all you've done for the Jets but its time to move on.

Not a feel good story if he can contribute which I think he can still do but as a role player. Of course if the film shows he was couldn't keep up with the "Pace" he has to go. Bui it's not just impact players that make up a roster. There are role players that are important too. If he goes in on 3rd downs or specific plays and contributes (with his experience and whatever he has left in the tank) guys like that are very valuable. .

Hes no benefit to this team he is slow offers no pass rush and cannot play special teams,

You could be right but what we see on the field isn't necessarily a player's total contribution to a play. I'll go with whatever the coaching staff says in their evaluation. If they say too slow to contribute then they should cut him. But if they think on a situational basis he can be a plus player then re-sign him. Again a roster is mostly not impact players it's guys who fit a role. Not too many JJ Watts around to make big and obvious plays. There are guys (maybe like Pace) who contribute to those kind of plays. It's not just one guy.

I would not sign him. He just don't have it on most plays. A play here and there he makes but it is a shame that Ikme or whatever his name was had to be involved with that incident with the idiot, Geno. He really looked good as a rookie especially that first step he had when rushing the passer.
