Bob Raissman on Joe Benigno

Recommended Posts

Interesting snippet.. In a few short hours it became the fanboy thing to do to get on air and destroy a coach and a team...

But Benigno's crusade against the media is reminding me more of politics than football... He's seeing shadows and making random accusations all because he didn't like the hire.

https://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/jets/ny-sports-adam-gase-benigno-roberts-mehta-raissman-20190111-story.html

"If Adam Gase wants a preview of how bad it could get for him inside the Valley of the Stupid he should ask Gang Green’s crack PR team to send him the link to all “Benigno & Roberts” WFAN shows from the past week. If the new Jets coach actually listens, a new qualification should be added to his resume.

Masochist.

Many moons ago, Joe Benigno and Evan Roberts revealed that, more than anything else, they are fans. One of “their” teams is the Jets.

It seems like Benigno had been campaigning for Todd Bowles’ dismissal since the ink was drying on the former coach’s contract four years ago. On numerous occasions Benigno, 65, has predicted he will be residing underground in a casket before the Jets win another Super Bowl. Much of his passion has rubbed off on Roberts, 35, who fortifies his harsh soliloquies with a modicum of substance.

Gang Green’s hiring of Gase brought the venom out of both Gasbags.

They verbally jolly-stomped the Jets for not inking former Green Bay coach Mike McCarthy and accused the media of purposely tilting the playing field against him. Benigno and Roberts have already called for Gase and GM Mike Maccagnan to be fired if the Jets don’t win a minimum of nine games next season. They also identified Woody and Christopher Johnson, aka “the owners,” as the “real” problem with the Jets, but graciously conceded they could not be fired. I’m sure the Johnson Brothers Band is relieved.

The talkies have so little respect for Mr. Gase that Roberts refers to him as “Peyton Manning’s Coffee Boy.”

Their hammer job on Gase and the Jets organization produced extremely compelling radio. To his credit, Roberts, a few days before the ball dropped in Times Square, predicted Maccagnan and Christopher Johnson might just hire Gase. This sent Benigno into full panic mode, spewing vim and vitriol. Benigno demanded the Jets hire McCarthy. Both guys insisted he was the most qualified candidate for the gig.

When the Jets hired Gase the Mouths really started foaming. Benigno and Roberts delivered the most scorching, scintillating radio WFAN has produced in a few years. Yet, their assault on the Jets organization was not without scapegoating. The duo, sounding very Trumpian, accused the local media, naming some members individually, including Daily News Jets columnist Manish Mehta, of stacking the deck against McCarthy. Benigno and Roberts went as far as calling it “character assassination.”

It wasn’t enough for Benigno and Roberts to “kill” the Jets, they felt compelled to “kill” the messengers too. Roberts, without providing any concrete facts or citing any sources (was his info being provided by caller “Ira From Staten Island?”), said the leaks “are coming from everywhere” inside the Jets organization. Benigno and Roberts went further, calling Mehta part of the Jets PR department.

During a contentious Friday interview, which was highlighted by Benigno shouting everyone down, Mehta went back and forth with the talkies on many issues concerning the Jets hiring of Gase. Mehta stated McCarthy was not a worthy candidate because “he doesn’t understand where the NFL is heading.” Nitty finally collided with Gritty when Roberts told Mehta (whom Benigno called the “Jets assistant GM”) some of the “garbage you tweeted and published” over the past three days “sounds like you work for the New York Jets.” He cited a Mehta tweet about Johnson and Maccagnan asking great questions to candidates interviewing for the job.

Mehta explained he spoke directly with three candidates who interviewed and were complimentary of Johnson and Maccagnan. “I actually work,” Mehta said. “I work my ass off. I have a mind of my own and I know people inside the (Jets) building and outside the building can get ticked off at me but I don’t really care. I’m sorry if you guys think I’m a PR arm of the team because I can assure you the PR department of the Jets doesn’t feel that way.”

In a Thursday interview with Post Jets beatman Brian Costello, Roberts asked: “Why do you and others have a vendetta against McCarthy?”

Costello, who is also FAN’s Jets beat reporter, told Roberts “he would argue” that point, adding he didn’t have a “vendetta” against McCarthy.

As long as we are talking “vendetta,” do Benigno and Roberts have one against the media, at least the ones they disagree with? A few days before Gase was hired, Benigno said: “The Jets better get this right. Don’t listen to the nonsense you read in the papers. These guys have an agenda. They don’t care if the Jets win.”

Nor should they.

They report news. And leave the rooting to Benigno and Roberts." - Bob Raissman

Disagree here. I don’t listen to sports talk radio, but the Jets made a lousy hire and deserve to be criticized.

Ya, people (including me) have fallen into the trap of saying "Well that's their job"...

But I hate that too... I hate that it's their job to get people's blood boiling or to rile up the masses one way or another.

I understand it's entertainment... No one would listen if it was just 4 hours of someone reading off scores and facts... You need some opinion and discussion... But it can be done better than this. It can be done without bashing and attacking people and making random baseless claims... We've seen it done.

It's one thing to criticize. It's another to berate people and make nonsense up to fit that narrative.

We weren't hoodwinked by the Jets. We weren't sold a false bill of goods as fans. The team fired Bowles and chose to go in the direction we're going. That's it. And that's a good thing. Period.

I just had the FAN on this morning - didn't know Evan would be on Saturday morning - and he was still at it, while he toned down his rhetoric he's building the case to reserve the right to slam the Jets for not winning 9-10 games next year while claiming he's a "fan" and wants to see Gase do well. Whatever.

Gase just got a big job with our team. How about just letting him get started?

I have always thought that the Jets are treated differently by the media than any other team in the NFL because they are the only team that does not dominate their home market.  The Giants are the old, established and more successful franchise with the bigger fanbase.  I really think this impacts the way we are covered.  If you are covering the Jets, and you rely on fair, balanced reporting, you are followed by 40% - 45% of your market.  If you are outrageous, over the top and overly critical, you will attract more than just Jet fans.  It is what it is and not likely to change soon.

Benigno is a big Jets fan and he is just sick of the losing. Sometimes he’s right and sometimes he’s wrong. In this occasion I think he’s wrong but Gase and the Jets are gonna have to prove it. As far as history goes he’s more than likely right cause the Jets have been bad for 8 years now but I think he will wind up being wrong in this occasion. Let him rant and rave - who cares cause it’s good radio. I just hope Gase and the Jets probe him wrong!

Has nothing to do with criticism.  Leveled criticism is perfectly fine. Over the top, extremist criticism(or positivity) is not stupid and lazy.

FAN has been great for all these years because the hosts and their opinions have always been honest.  This half-assed attempt by Beningo to play the victim and act all incensed was clearly staged, it was all faked for the sake of ratings and post-broadcast clicks.

Boomer and Gio went so far as to advertise the upcoming Beningo open before it was even broadcast.  Social media is destroying EVERYTHING, they don't need any help like this to put them under.

All Beningo and Roberts are doing is what WFAN wants  them to do. When you have people in the media actually  reporting on you and you are also the media, you are doing something right.

When ypu are a media outlet, you have to take a side. Just look at the differences in how the media covers Trump. This is very much the same thing with the Jets fan base. There are sone that are ok with the hire and others that are not ok with it and these two are throwing red meat to the not ok crowd. This is what you want if you are WFAN.

But I feel like it shouldn't be that... We shouldn't need SUCH polarizing differences in opinion to enjoy listening to people debate or present their arguments one way or another... It doesn't have to nearly come to a brawl.

Did he ever say how many wins he expected McCarthy to get this year if he were the Jets HC? I thought the show was painful to hear especially the Jets callers. I get the impression that in order for him to be pasified, Gase has to win 2 or 3 more games  than McCarthy would have. Because Gase was not his preferred candidate, it’s now playoffs or bust. Forget about all the stuff that was said before about developing Darnold. All that is out the window.

Jets fans lead the league in playing the victim and Beningo has gone full-Fireman Ed, struggling to deal with the new reality.

Neither represent today's fanbase and need to go away already.

SAR I

What exactly is today's fan base? You have your opinion just like Joe Beningo and the many others. What is this new reality you speak of?

Full-fireman Ed? Again what does that mean in this context?

The beat writers had no business defending this hire. Beningo and Roberts are 100 percent correct in their narrative. As a season ticket holder I am absolutely livid that they hired this guy when there were better options available.

The only reason any of these guys a defending the Jets is to continue to get access. Gase is an AWFUL hire, and the hiring process sounded like an absolute cluster.

Actually he does because anyone who hated this hire is all in with these two and loving every syllable they utter. I have a friend who works as a writer for a technology security website and he told me as a writer you have to take a side because the only thing in the middle of the road is yellow lines and dead armadillos. Yeah, he's from Texas.

Any coach hired would have to prove they were the right selection.  The stupidity of all of this is the idea that McCarthy, his resume, his lazy attitude towards his coaching future, made him a slam dunk, the have to hire him or else, choice.  He wasn't, there were credible reasons not to hire him and its been reported that more than a few GMs were concerned over his wanting to take a year off.  The falloff, even if you wanted McCarthy to Gase doesnt warrant the attack on the Jets, management or whoever doesnt agree with them.

Love that Manish the former shlt stirrer looking for clicks is now a fanboy because you dont agree with his liking the selection and the way they went about it. OK

funny how benigno goes out of his way to diss the media for dissing mccarthy when benigno is the media.  from what i can tell only maneesh thought mccarthy would be a bad hire.

we'll have to see what gase does.  he checked many of the boxes i would have been looking for.  but when maneesh tries to argue that the nfl has passed mccarthy by is that because he's 55?  is the bellichicken something north of 65?  wasn't parcells 55 when he took the jets job?  it sounds like age discrimination.  and just what do the younger guys know?  remember when pete carroll used to have his pick up basketball games with the team?  and didn't rex bring the team to places like dave and busters?  i mean just where does maneesh think the nfl is going?

These kinds of attacks on the Jets and Gase may have backfired for these clowns.  Its was so over the top that there seems to be a blowback from lots of likely and unlikely people disputing their claims and are giving the Jets more praise for the hire than they got initially

You know,  one thing I have been thinking about with McCarthy  who I guess is who you wanted and to be honest, the guy I wanted as well. MM had who is the GOAT in Rogers at QB. Is the team the Jets have better than what GB has. Is there an Adams or Jones on the Jets, is there even a Cobb? How was MM going to win with Darnold and what we have when he couldn't  do it with a much better QB and the GB team? We are going to have different players this season, that is for sure but anyone that expects marked difference in play due to some mid level upgrades we make on FA and a #3 pick is smoking some good stuff. I wanted MM because he wouldn't  mess up Sam but in that light, I don't think Gase messes him up either,  he just doesn't have the track record because Tanny didn't  work out. Probably not Gase's fault, he just doesn't have the ability,  but getting the team to play better than GB was something I never thought about until recently.

What part of the hiring process were you not happy with? Just curious what you think they should have done differently from a process standpoint?

I heard the entire interview - not always a fan of Manish but Joe and Evan are pathetic, self-loathing, poorly educated, fake news/make it up as they go shock jocks. They shout and yell, have almost no credible arguments and only speak about the worst case scenario.  New Yorkers should be ashamed to be represented by these guys. There low-brow, beat you over the head nonsense with their 4-year old demeanor and exaggerated New York accents (do yourself a favor and never speak like one of these guys in a job interview that pays more than minimum wage) is a detriment to the entire NY sports world.

Joe, who I like, sounds like an idiot, and you end up feeling bad for Mehta, who comes across well

Most, sports media are dinosaurs, dead and do not know it yet, they have been replaced by this board (and others like it) - better information, better analysis, real fan opinions, etc...

GMFB and most of the NFL talk shows are more variety show than anything else - skits, singing and dancing  - unwatchable unless you like SOAPs
